Chapter 11: The Secret My Wife Couldn't Escape

Vanessa stared at the tabletop as if the wood grain contained the words she couldn't bring herself to say.

Detective Harris sat across from her, her notebook open.

I stood beside the wall, my arms folded.

"What does Patricia have on you?"" I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"You won't understand.""

"Try me.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"When Lily was born, I was exhausted. I wasn't sleeping. I felt like I was failing at everything, and Patricia kept telling me I was too soft with her.""

"You were her mother. You were supposed to protect her.""

"I know that now.""

"No. You knew it then. Dad warned you.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"Your father threatened to take Lily away. Patricia said he was trying to destroy our marriage, and I believed her.""

"Why?""

"Because Patricia told me she'd help me prove he was unstable. She said if he kept interfering, we'd make him look like a man who couldn't be trusted around children.""

I stared at her.

"You were going to use my father against himself?""

"I didn't want to!""

"But you let him die believing he couldn't protect his granddaughter.""

Vanessa covered her face.

For several seconds, the only sound was the hum of the ventilation system.

Detective Harris finally spoke.

"Mrs. Carter, we need you to be specific. What did Patricia threaten to reveal?""

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"After Lily was born, I made a terrible mistake. I left her alone in the bathtub for a few seconds while I went to answer the door. She slipped beneath the water.""

My chest tightened.

"How long was she underwater?""

"I don't know. It happened so quickly. I pulled her out immediately. She coughed, cried, and seemed fine.""

"Did you take her to the doctor?""

"Yes. The doctor examined her and said she appeared to be okay.""

"Did you tell Daniel?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

I felt a wave of disbelief.

"You hid that from me?""

"I was ashamed. Patricia told me that if I admitted what happened, you'd think I was a terrible mother.""

"So she used your shame to control you.""

"At first, she said she was protecting me. Then she started bringing it up whenever I disagreed with her.""

Vanessa's voice grew quieter.

"She told me she could make you believe I was dangerous. She said she'd tell everyone I had neglected Lily and that she'd use the bathtub incident to prove it.""

Detective Harris wrote something down.

"Did Patricia ever threaten to report the incident?""

"Yes.""

"And did that influence your behavior toward Lily?""

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she nodded.

"She told me that if Lily ever complained about how we disciplined her, I'd lose everything. She said I needed to make Lily understand that family matters stayed inside the family.""

I felt sick.

"So you made our daughter afraid to speak.""

"I thought I was keeping everything together.""

"You were protecting yourself.""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I know.""

For the first time, I believed she understood the words she was saying.

But understanding wasn't the same as remorse, and remorse wasn't the same as safety.

"Why did you hurt Noah?"" I asked.

She shook her head violently.

"I didn't mean to hurt him.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Patricia said I needed to stop letting him control the house. She said babies become manipulative when you respond to every cry.""

"He's six months old!""

"I know!""

Her voice cracked.

"I was tired. I was angry. I grabbed him too roughly, and he screamed.

I panicked. I told Patricia to stop recording, but she said we needed proof that Lily was responsible if anyone asked questions.""

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"Did you deliberately injure your son?""

Vanessa stared at her hands.

"I never wanted him to be injured.""

"That wasn't the question.""

Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.

"I don't know what happened the first time. I remember grabbing him. I remember him crying. I remember Patricia telling me to calm down.""

She swallowed.

"But Monday, I knew he was hurt. And I let Patricia tell me how to explain it.""

I felt anger rise so quickly that I had to turn away.

Noah had been helpless. Lily had been terrified. Vanessa had been given opportunities to ask for help, to seek medical care, to tell me the truth.

Instead, she had chosen silence.

Detective Harris continued asking questions, documenting Vanessa's account and distinguishing what she claimed to remember from what she had been told.

Then Vanessa looked directly at me.

"There's something else.""

I didn't move.

"Patricia didn't just threaten me with the bathtub incident. She told me she had proof that you weren't the father of Lily.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"She said she'd found messages that showed you had been working out of state when Lily was conceived. She claimed she'd use them to destroy our marriage.""

I almost laughed.

"I was in Atlanta. I was working on the hospital expansion project.""

"I know that now.""

"Then why believe her?""

"Because she showed me messages. I didn't understand what I was looking at, but she said they proved you'd been lying to me.""

Detective Harris interrupted.

"That allegation isn't directly relevant to the immediate safety investigation unless it explains another motive or threat. We can document it, but we need to focus on the children's welfare and the evidence concerning their injuries.""

Vanessa nodded.

Then she reached into her handbag.

"I brought something.""

The detective immediately asked her to leave the item inside the bag until its nature could be assessed and documented.

Vanessa slowly removed a small envelope and placed it on the table.

Inside was a photograph of Patricia standing beside a man I didn't recognize. They were outside a hotel, and Patricia was holding a folder beneath her arm.

On the back, someone had written a date from eight months earlier.

Vanessa looked at me.

"That man was supposed to help Patricia prove you were an unfit father. She said he was a private investigator.""

I studied the photograph.

"Why are you showing me this now?""

"Because I found his business card in her purse. I called him yesterday, after you left the house.""

Detective Harris took the photograph for documentation.

"What did he tell you?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He said Patricia had hired him to investigate our family. But when I asked what he'd found, he told me he was sorry.""

"Sorry for what?""

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

"He said he had evidence that Patricia had been hurting Lily long before I ever did.""

I looked at her, unable to hide my disbelief.

"And you knew that?""

"No. Not until yesterday.""

"Then why did you keep allowing her near our children?""

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

"Because I was afraid she'd expose me.""

The answer was honest, perhaps, but it was also devastating.

She had known her mother was dangerous. She had suspected that Lily was suffering. She had even seen evidence that something was wrong.

And still, she had chosen to protect herself.

Detective Harris closed her notebook.

"Mrs. Carter, we'll need the investigator's contact information and any records you have. You should not contact Patricia or attempt to coordinate your accounts with her.""

Vanessa nodded.

As she stood, she looked at me one last time.

"I know you may never forgive me.""

I met her eyes.

"Forgiveness isn't what I'm thinking about right now.""

She waited.

"I'm thinking about the fact that Lily begged you to stop, and you didn't.""

Vanessa lowered her head.

The detective escorted her out.

I returned to Noah's room, where Lily was awake and waiting for me.

She held up her drawing.

The house now had a blue door.

Beside it, she had drawn a small figure holding another figure's hand.

"That's you and me," she said.

I smiled sadly.

"That's a beautiful picture.""

She leaned closer.

"Daddy, is Mommy coming home?""

I took her hand.

"Not tonight, sweetheart.""

She looked relieved.

Then she whispered, "Good. Because I remembered something else.""

My heart tightened.

"What is it?""

Lily glanced at the hallway before speaking.

"Grandma Patricia told Mommy that if Daddy ever found out the truth, they would have to do what they did to Grandpa.""

I went completely still.

"What did they do to Grandpa?""

May you like

Lily's lower lip trembled.

"Mommy said Grandpa didn't die because he was sick.""
