Chapter 4: The Woman Who Had Been Stealing My Inheritance
I stared at the name on my laptop until the letters blurred.
Rachel Bennett.
Vanessa's sister.
I'd met Rachel only a handful of times over the years. She lived outside Savannah, worked in real estate, and had always treated me with a strange mixture of politeness and contempt. At family gatherings, she'd make little comments about my construction job, my worn-out truck, and the fact that I was raising Caleb alone before Vanessa entered our lives.
I had never trusted her completely.
But I had never imagined she was taking my money.
"Vanessa," I said, turning the laptop toward her, "why has your sister been receiving transfers from my inheritance?""
Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Tyler stood frozen on the stairs.
"Mom," he said, "what is he talking about?""
Vanessa shot him a furious look.
"Go upstairs, Tyler.""
"No."" I closed the laptop halfway.
"He's staying. You said the apartment was being paid for with my inheritance. I want to know what that means.""
Tyler came down two steps.
"Mom told me Grandpa Michael left you enough money to buy a place for me," he said.
"She said you agreed because you wanted me to have a fresh start.""
"My father never agreed to buy you an apartment.""
Tyler looked genuinely confused.
"But she showed me the paperwork.""
"What paperwork?""
He glanced at Vanessa.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
Tyler swallowed.
"She said there was an account set up for the apartment. She told me you'd been putting money into it for months.""
I opened the transaction history again.
There were regular transfers from my inheritance account to an account associated with Rachel. The earliest one dated back eleven months.
I had been told that my inheritance was safely invested in a conservative account. I checked the balance every few months, but I'd never examined every transaction because the account was separate from our household finances.
Now I understood how someone could steal from me while making me believe everything was fine.
"How much have you taken?"" I asked Vanessa.
She folded her arms.
"You're making accusations without understanding the situation.""
"Then explain it.""
"Rachel was helping us manage some expenses.""
"With my inheritance?""
"She knows about investments.""
"She's a real estate agent, not my financial adviser.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You always have to make everyone feel small, don't you?""
I almost laughed.
She had spent years making me feel guilty for working long hours, then used that guilt to justify whatever she wanted. Now, when I asked where my money had gone, she was trying to turn herself into the victim.
I pulled up the bank's fraud department number.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Don't call them.""
"Why?""
"Because you'll destroy this family over a misunderstanding.""
"Thirty-eight thousand dollars isn't a misunderstanding.""
She went still.
I had added the known transfers from the joint account to the withdrawals from my inheritance. The exact total still needed to be verified, but it was already far beyond what I could dismiss as an accounting error.
Tyler sank onto the bottom stair.
"Mom, you said everything was legal.""
Vanessa spun toward him.
"It is legal!""
"Then why are you screaming?""
Her hand shot out and slapped the folder against the railing.
"Because your stepfather is trying to ruin our lives!""
Caleb appeared in the hallway, holding his new baseball glove against his chest. He must have heard the shouting from upstairs.
I immediately lowered my voice.
"Buddy, go back to the guest room for a minute.""
He hesitated.
"Are you fighting?""
"No. We're figuring something out.""
"Is she going to send me away?""
I walked over and crouched in front of him.
"No one is sending you anywhere.""
He searched my face.
"Promise?""
"Promise.""
He nodded and returned upstairs.
When I turned around, Vanessa was staring after him with an expression that made my skin crawl.
"You baby him too much," she said.
"He is eight.""
"He needs discipline.""
"He needs shoes that fit and a mother who doesn't threaten to send him away.""
Her cheeks flushed.
"I have done more for that boy than you will ever know.""
"Then tell me where his birthday money went.""
She looked away.
That silence was all the answer I needed.
I called my attorney, Robert, and put him on speaker.
He listened as I explained the transfers and Rachel's involvement.
"Michael," he said, "I want you to stop discussing the financial details with Vanessa until we have the records secured. Contact both financial institutions, report the suspected unauthorized activity, and ask them to preserve the transfer information.""
Vanessa shook her head furiously.
Robert continued.
"And don't sign anything she gives you. Regarding Caleb, keep the admission paperwork and document every attempt to remove him from your care.""
"I understand.""
When the call ended, Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
"I'm going to Rachel's.""
"No, you're not.""
She stared at me.
"You cannot tell me where I can go.""
"You're free to leave. But the bank records, school forms, and everything related to Caleb stay here.""
She laughed without humor.
"You think a few screenshots make you powerful?""
"No. I think the truth does.""
She marched toward the front door, but stopped when her phone rang again.
Rachel's name appeared on the screen.
Vanessa answered and turned away from us.
"What?""
I couldn't hear Rachel's response, but I heard Vanessa whisper, "Not now.""
Another pause.
Then Rachel's voice became loud enough for me to catch a sentence.
"Did you get the second signature?""
Vanessa's face went white.
She glanced over her shoulder at me.
"I told you I'd handle it.""
Rachel said something else.
Vanessa ended the call so abruptly that the phone nearly slipped from her hand.
I stepped toward her.
"What second signature?""
"Nothing.""
"What document needs another signature?""
"Michael, leave it alone.""
I picked up the folder she'd dropped earlier and examined the remaining papers. Beneath the residential placement documents was a partially completed financial authorization form.
My name was printed at the top.
The form granted permission to transfer funds from my inheritance account to an investment company.
The signature line was blank.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You were going to forge this, too.""
She snatched the form from my hand.
"I haven't signed anything!""
"Yet.""
She pressed the papers against her chest.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Tyler rose from the stairs.
"Mom, you said this was all for me.""
Vanessa's face softened immediately.
"Sweetheart, it is for you.""
"Then why does Caleb have to leave?""
Her expression changed.
"Because there isn't enough room for everyone to get what they need.""
I stared at her.
There it was.
The excuse she had used to justify every missing dollar, every insult, every cruel decision.
She believed Caleb's needs were obstacles to Tyler's future.
And she'd convinced Tyler to believe it, too.
I turned back to my laptop.
The bank had sent an automated notification about a suspicious transaction associated with the inheritance account.
The amount was $12,000.
The transfer had been attempted that morning.
Its destination was the same investment company named on the authorization form.
But there was one detail that made me stop breathing.
The account used to initiate the transfer had been accessed from a computer inside my own house.
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was already staring at me.
May you like
And when I asked her who had used my banking credentials, she whispered something that changed everything.
"Michael, you need to understand. I wasn't the only person involved.""
