Chapter 10: The Daughter Rachel Had Lost
I read the adoption record three times.
Lily Brooks.
The name seemed to move across the page, refusing to settle into something real.
Rachel and I had met when we were twenty-four. We had dated for two years before getting married, and I had believed I knew everything about her past. She had told me about her childhood, her college years, her first job, and the difficult relationship she had with her father.
She had never mentioned another child.
I looked at Marcus.
“What is this?””
“An adoption record.””
“I can read.””
“Then perhaps you should ask your mother why she knew about it.””
I turned toward Eleanor.
She was crying silently.
“Mom?””
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“Daniel, I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
“When I knew how.””
I slapped the document onto the table.
“You've had years!””
Maya's face flashed through my mind. My daughter had spent the previous evening wondering whether Vanessa hated her because she reminded her of Rachel. Now I was learning that Rachel might have carried an entire secret life without telling me.
“Was Lily Rachel's daughter?”” I demanded.
My mother nodded.
The room seemed to tilt.
“How old was she?””
“She would be eighteen now.””
I gripped the back of a chair.
“Rachel had a child before Maya?””
“Yes.””
“And she never told me?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“She was young. She was twenty when she became pregnant. Her father had just died, and she was struggling financially. She believed she couldn't provide a stable home for a baby.””
I stared at the adoption record.
“Why didn't she tell me when we got married?””
“Because she was ashamed of the circumstances. Later, she wanted to tell you, but she couldn't find the right moment. She was afraid you'd see her differently.””
“Rachel knew me better than that.””
“I know.””
My voice broke.
“Then why?””
My mother reached for my hand, but I stepped away.
Marcus watched us with an expression that made my skin crawl.
“Touching, isn't it?”” he said.
“A family full of secrets.””
Robert moved toward him.
“Where did you obtain this record?””
Marcus shrugged.
“From the same archive Rachel was trying to recover.””
“Is it authentic?””
“Ask Eleanor.””
My mother wiped her face.
“The adoption was legal,” she said.
“Rachel made the decision with the help of a social worker. She was told the records would remain confidential.””
“Then how did Marcus find them?””
Eleanor's eyes shifted toward him.
“Because he was working with someone who had access to the original files.””
Marcus laughed.
“Your mother is leaving out the important part.””
He took the record and tapped a paragraph near the bottom.
“The adoption was arranged through a private agency. A donor funded part of the process. That donor later became one of the investors in your grandfather's business.””
I looked at Robert.
“Can that be verified?””
“We'll need the original agency records,” he replied.
Marcus leaned against the counter.
“Rachel discovered the connection five years ago. She realized someone had used the agency to move money through accounts connected to your grandfather's trust.””
“Who?””
“That's what she was trying to prove.””
I looked at the adoption record again.
A handwritten address appeared in the margin.
It belonged to a town outside Savannah.
“Where is Lily now?””
Marcus's expression changed.
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I'm not.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“He knows.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Marcus stared at his sister.
“Be quiet.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You told me you found her.””
“Vanessa.””
“You said she was living with the family who adopted her. You said the records were destroyed.””
Marcus crossed the room toward her.
“Shut your mouth.””
I stepped between them.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa's hands trembled.
“Marcus found the adoption family through the agency's financial records. He contacted them last year.””
“Why?””
“To make sure they wouldn't talk.””
May you like
My stomach tightened.
“Talk
