Chapter 11: Two Mothers, One Impossible Truth

Claire sat across from us, her hands trembling in her lap.

Emma stayed pressed against my side.

The investigator introduced herself as Detective Harris and explained that Claire had agreed to provide a statement after learning that Richard had been arrested.

“Before we discuss anything else,” Detective Harris said, “I want to make something clear. We have not confirmed that any babies were switched. We're investigating possible fraud involving adoption records. Until we have verified evidence, we cannot establish anyone's biological relationship.””

Claire nodded.

“I understand.””

She looked at Emma.

“I've waited years for answers. I won't ask her to believe me just because I want it to be true.””

I appreciated that more than she could know.

“Tell us what happened,” I said.

Claire folded her hands tightly.

“Ten years ago, I gave birth to a little girl at St. Mary's Hospital. I was unmarried, frightened, and struggling financially. A social worker named Elaine Mercer told me she could help me find a family who would give my baby a stable home.””

“Did you sign adoption papers?”” Detective Harris asked.

“No. I refused. I wanted to keep my daughter.””

Claire swallowed.

“Three days later, they told me she had died from complications. They gave me a death certificate, but they wouldn't let me see her body.””

I felt sick.

“What did you do?””

“I tried to get answers. The hospital told me there had been a mistake in the paperwork. The agency told me I was grieving and confused. Eventually, a lawyer advised me to stop pursuing it because I had no evidence.””

“And Rachel found you?””

Claire nodded.

“She was investigating suspicious transfers from an account connected to Richard Cole. One of the payments had gone to the adoption agency. She traced the payment to Elaine Mercer.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

“Could Richard have been financing illegal adoptions through my company?””

“That's one of the possibilities we're investigating,” she replied.

“We need financial records and original documents before drawing conclusions.””

Claire continued.

“Rachel contacted me because she found a second birth record bearing my name. It listed a living child, born on the same date as the baby I had been told was dead.””

Emma lifted her head.

“Was that me?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

She reached into her bag and took out a small photograph.

It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket. A silver bracelet circled the baby's wrist.

The same heart-shaped charm appeared beside the baby's hand.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Where did you get that?””

“Rachel sent it to me. She said it came from a hospital record she had discovered.””

Claire turned the photograph over.

On the back, Rachel had written:

If the records are correct, one of us has been lied to.

Detective Harris took the photograph and placed it in an evidence sleeve.

“Do you have any original hospital records?””

“Only copies.””

“Where are they?””

Claire hesitated.

“Rachel kept the originals. She told me she would give them to Michael after she verified the information.””

I thought of Rachel's letter and the blue notebook.

She had been trying to protect Emma, but from what? A fraudulent adoption? A financial conspiracy? The possibility that our daughter had been taken from another woman?

I looked at Claire.

“Did Rachel ever tell you she believed I wasn't Emma's biological father?””

Claire's expression changed.

“No.””

“Did she ever say Emma wasn't her biological daughter?””

“No. She told me she loved Emma more than anything. She said that whatever the records revealed, Emma deserved to grow up surrounded by people who loved her.””

My eyes burned.

That sounded like Rachel.

Even facing a terrifying truth, she would have put Emma first.

Detective Harris stood.

“We need to verify the records and obtain DNA samples with appropriate consent. Until then, we'll treat all claims as unconfirmed.””

Claire nodded.

“Of course.””

After the detective left, Claire looked at me.

“Michael, there's something I need to tell you about Rachel.””

I waited.

“The night before she died, she called me. She was crying.””

“What did she say?””

“She told me Richard had discovered that she was planning to take the evidence to the police. She said she was afraid he would destroy the records before anyone could see them.””

Claire paused.

“Then she said something I didn't understand at the time. She told me, ‘If anything happens to me, make sure Michael knows the truth about the second child.’”

My stomach tightened.

“The second child?””

Claire nodded.

“She didn't mean Emma. At least, I don't think she did.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Lily.””

Claire's face crumpled.

“I believe Richard knows where my daughter is. He has known for years.””

A knock interrupted us.

Detective Harris returned, holding a sealed envelope.

“We found this in Richard's vehicle. It appears to be a copy of a hospital transfer record.””

She placed it on the table.

The document listed two newborns delivered within minutes of each other at St. Mary's Hospital.

One was identified as Emma Carter, daughter of Rachel Carter and Michael Carter.

The other was identified as Lily Bennett, daughter of Claire Bennett.

Beside both entries was the same handwritten code.

*Transfer 17-B.*

Beneath the code, someone had written:

Identity reconciliation pending.

I stared at the page.

“Does this mean the babies were switched?””

“Not necessarily,” Detective Harris replied.

“It could indicate a clerical procedure, an administrative error, or deliberate falsification. We need the original hospital logs and independent DNA testing.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Emma looked between us.

“Why would someone change our names?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Claire whispered, “Money, perhaps. Or control.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

“Who authorized the transfer?””

She turned the page.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

*Elaine Mercer, Senior Placement Coordinator.*

I recognized the name from Claire's account.

But there was another signature beside it.

One that made my blood turn cold.

*Jessica Carter.*

I stared at the page.

“Jessica wasn't working at the hospital ten years ago.””

“No,” Detective Harris said.

“According to the preliminary records, she wasn't.””

“Then how did she sign this?””

The detective looked grim.

“That is exactly what we intend to find out.””

Claire began crying quietly.

Emma reached across the table and placed her small hand over Claire's.

The gesture was so gentle that it nearly broke me.

“It's okay,” Emma whispered.

“We'll find out.””

Claire looked at her, trembling.

Then she said something that changed the direction of the entire investigation.

“Emma, I don't think Jessica signed that document ten years ago.””

She pointed to the signature.

“I think someone copied her name.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Who?””

May you like

Claire looked directly at me.

“Rachel.””
