Chapter 11: The Woman Who Finally Told the Truth

Rebecca agreed to meet Robert at his office the next morning.

I arrived ten minutes early, carrying the original trust documents and a notebook filled with questions. Claire had offered to stay with Sophie, and Tyler had volunteered to keep Madison company.

For the first time since discovering the canceled reservation, I felt as though we were moving toward the truth rather than stumbling blindly through another disaster.

Then Rebecca arrived.

She was in her early thirties, with tired eyes and a gray coat several sizes too large. She held a small black bag against her chest.

“Thank you for seeing me,” she said.

Robert introduced himself and explained that he was representing me, not her. If she needed independent legal advice, he would help her find separate counsel.

Rebecca nodded.

“I understand.””

She placed an external drive on the table.

“Everything I scanned is here.””

Robert didn't plug it into his computer. Instead, he placed it in a sealed evidence bag and documented its condition.

“We'll arrange for the files to be examined safely,” he explained.

“For now, I need you to tell us what you personally witnessed.””

Rebecca folded her hands.

“Daniel hired me about eight months ago. He said his company helped families arrange educational placements and manage related expenses.””

“Was that what the company actually did?”” I asked.

“Some of it. But most of the work I saw involved financial paperwork. Daniel would ask me to scan documents, prepare invoices, and send letters to people who owed him money.””

“Did you know Vanessa before you worked for him?””

“No. I met her after I started.””

Rebecca took a breath.

“Daniel told me she was his business partner. Later, I realized they were involved romantically.””

My stomach tightened, though I wasn't surprised.

“Did they discuss Sophie?””

“Yes. Several times.””

“What did they say?””

Rebecca looked down.

“Daniel said your daughter was the only obstacle to a larger financial arrangement. He said once she was placed in residential care, Vanessa would have more control over the household and could complete the transfer.””

“Which transfer?””

“The trust money.””

I leaned forward.

“Why would sending Sophie away help them take her money?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't know all the legal details. Daniel said the guardianship arrangement would make it easier to manage her affairs. He also said you would eventually agree because you wouldn't want a public dispute.””

Robert made a note.

“Did you see any document that granted Vanessa authority over the trust?””

“No. I only saw the application and the transfer request.””

“Did Daniel tell you why he wanted the money?””

Rebecca's expression changed.

“He said Vanessa owed him money from an earlier business deal. He claimed he had invested in something she was involved with before she married you.””

“Was the company legitimate?””

“I can't say. But Daniel was angry because he believed Vanessa had used him, and he wanted his money back.””

I thought of the spreadsheet listing the balance due.

“So he was using my daughter's trust to collect a debt between himself and my wife.””

“That was my understanding.””

Robert asked Rebecca to describe the documents she had scanned.

She explained that most were financial records connected to the charity Emily had volunteered with years earlier. Some contained donor information. Others appeared to be invoices for expenses that had never been properly documented.

“Did you find Emily's letter?”” I asked.

Rebecca nodded.

“It was in a folder marked Archive — E.W.. Daniel told me to scan it, but not to open the sealed envelope. I scanned the outside and the first page of a copy that was already loose in the folder.””

“Can you remember what the first page said?””

She closed her eyes.

“It said Emily had discovered irregular payments connected to the charity. She wrote that she believed someone had been using a consulting company to route donations into private accounts.””

“Was Daniel's company named?””

“Not in the part I saw.””

“Was Vanessa's name there?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did it say?””

“Emily wrote that Vanessa had provided some of the invoices and had access to the records. But she also said she didn't know whether Vanessa understood what was happening.””

That complicated everything.

Vanessa might have been involved in the original financial misconduct. Or she might have been used by Daniel, just as she was now trying to use me.

Neither possibility excused what she had done to Sophie.

But I needed to know whether she had entered my life by accident or with a plan already in motion.

Robert leaned forward.

“Rebecca, did Daniel ever say what happened to the original letter?””

“He said Emily's husband had it. He believed it was in a safe-deposit box.””

I looked at Robert.

“He knew about the box.””

Rebecca nodded.

“He said he'd tried to get access, but the bank wouldn't accept the authorization.””

“Did he tell you why he wanted the letter?””

“He said it could destroy him if it became public.””

Silence settled over the room.

Finally, I asked, “Why did you sign the affidavit?””

Rebecca's eyes filled again.

“I was afraid. Daniel told me that if I refused, he'd report me for mishandling company funds. He said he had copies of every document I'd ever touched. I thought signing one statement would protect my job.””

“And now?””

“Now I realize he was using me. He was going to blame me for the false documents if anyone investigated.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a printed email.

“This came in last night.””

Robert took it carefully.

The message was from Daniel.

Destroy the archive files. Delete every copy. If anyone asks, you never saw anything connected to Emily Walker.

Below it was a second line.

If Michael gets the letter, we all go down.

Robert studied the email.

“Did you reply?””

“No.””

“Good. Don't contact him again. We'll preserve this message and discuss the next steps with your attorney.””

Rebecca nodded, visibly relieved.

Before she left, she turned toward me.

“Mr. Walker, I need you to understand something. I never wanted Sophie hurt.

Daniel said the placement was temporary. He said your wife was trying to give her a better life.””

I looked at her.

“You signed a statement that could have taken my daughter away from me.””

“I know.””

“And if I hadn't found those documents, I might never have known you lied.””

She lowered her head.

“I know.””

I wanted to shout at her. I wanted to ask how someone could risk a child's future to protect a job.

Instead, I said, “Tell the truth from now on. Whatever happens, tell the truth.””

She nodded and left.

Robert waited until the door closed.

“The files could be extremely important,” he said.

“But we need to establish their authenticity and whether the underlying financial records support Emily's concerns.””

“Can we open the original letter?””

“We can review it with the trustee and your estate attorney. We should also ask the appropriate authorities whether the suspected financial misconduct warrants a formal investigation.””

I looked at the evidence bag containing Rebecca's drive.

“Do you think Vanessa knew Daniel was trying to find it?””

“Her warning suggests she did. But we need to hear her explanation before drawing a firm conclusion.””

That afternoon, Vanessa called.

I almost ignored it.

Then she sent a text.

Please. I need to tell you what happened with Emily. Daniel is not the only person who lied.

I agreed to meet her at Robert's office, with counsel present.

When Vanessa arrived, she looked exhausted. Her hair was pulled back carelessly, and she had no makeup on.

She sat across from me.

“I know you hate me,” she said.

“I don't know what I feel anymore.””

She nodded, as though she expected that answer.

“Daniel and I were together years ago. Before you. Before I met Emily through the charity.””

“You told me he was a family friend.””

“I lied.””

“About how much else?””

She looked at her hands.

“Emily discovered that I had approved invoices I shouldn't have approved. Daniel told me they were legitimate expenses. I didn't know where all the money was going, but I knew some of the records didn't match.””

“Did you help him divert donations?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I signed documents without checking them. I let him use my name. When Emily confronted me, I was terrified.””

“What did she do?””

“She gave me a chance to tell the truth. She said she'd help me correct the records if I cooperated.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

The answer came so quietly I almost didn't hear it.

“Daniel threatened me. He said he'd expose everything and make sure I took the blame. I was pregnant with Madison, and I was scared of losing my future.””

“So you walked away.””

“Yes.””

“And then you married me.””

She began crying.

“I didn't marry you because of Emily's money.””

“But you knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“At first, I told myself it was a coincidence. Then I realized you had access to the records Daniel wanted. I should have told you everything. Instead, I kept hoping the past would stay buried.””

“Until he demanded $125,000.””

She nodded.

“He said he'd expose me unless I helped him recover what he believed I owed him. He wanted the trust money, the guardianship order, and the letter.””

“And you agreed to send my daughter away.””

“I thought it would only be temporary.””

“You knew she was frightened. You knew she thought she didn't belong.””

Vanessa looked up at me.

“I was wrong.””

“Wrong doesn't cover this.””

“I know.””

I stood.

“Why did you send me that warning outside the courthouse?””

Her face changed.

“Because Daniel told me something I hadn't known before. He said Emily didn't just discover the financial irregularities. She found proof that he had been using the charity to fund another business.””

“What business?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don't know the full details. But I heard him say the money was connected to a property investment in Florida.””

Florida.

The vacation.

The separate suite.

The company.

I stared at her.

“Was the resort reservation part of his plan?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you book the second suite so you could meet him?””

She nodded.

I felt something inside me go quiet.

“Get your things from the house,” I said.

“You won't be staying there while we sort this out. Robert will communicate with your attorney about the children and the court orders.””

“Michael, please—”

“No. You don't get to ask me to protect you from the consequences of what you chose to do.””

She lowered her head.

As she stood to leave, she turned back.

“There's one more thing you need to know. Daniel isn't trying to recover the money he invested in me.””

“Then what does he want?””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“He wants the original letter because it names the person who actually received the missing charity funds.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She looked toward Robert, then back at me.

“Michael, the name in that letter isn't Daniel's.””

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“It's someone in your family.””
