Chapter 13: The Contract That Exposed Them All

I read the contract three times before I trusted myself to breathe.

The document named Richard Vale, Rebecca Shaw, and Vanessa Bennett. It listed a payment scheduled for the day after Zoria's scholarship withdrawal was supposed to become official.

The final condition was printed beneath their signatures.

Disbursement contingent upon successful removal of the original award recipient.

Vanessa had added a handwritten note.

She must never find out.

I called Officer Daniels immediately.

He told me not to contact Vanessa or Richard Vale and not to arrange a private meeting without informing investigators. I photographed the document on my screen, preserved the original email, and sent the information through the secure channel he had provided.

Twenty minutes later, he called back.

“Mr. Bennett, where did you receive that contract?””

“From Vanessa.””

“Has she told you where she is?””

“She wants me to meet her at the location where Hannah interviewed with Rebecca.””

“Don't go alone. We need to verify the document and determine whether it is authentic. Can you forward the original email with its attachment intact?””

“I've done that.””

“Good. We'll contact you again shortly.””

I ended the call and looked toward the stairs.

Zoria was sitting on her bedroom floor, sorting through the college supplies she had packed away. Hannah sat beside her, checking scholarship websites on her laptop.

They looked up when I entered.

“Dad?”” Zoria asked.

“What's happened?””

I sat on the edge of the bed and showed them the contract.

Hannah read it first.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“They were going to get paid?””

“The contract appears to describe a payment,” I said.

“The investigators need to establish whether it's genuine and what the payment was for.””

Zoria stared at Vanessa's handwriting.

“She knew this was going to happen before I even won.””

“That's what the dates suggest.””

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she asked the question I had been dreading.

“Was I ever supposed to get that scholarship?””

I took her hand.

“You earned it. Whatever these people planned, they didn't change the work you did to qualify.””

“But what if the committee had already decided?””

“Then they abused the process. That doesn't mean you didn't deserve the award.””

Her eyes filled, but she didn't look away.

“I want to know why they chose me.””

“So do I.””

At 10:15 the following morning, Officer Daniels called with instructions.

Investigators had arranged to meet Vanessa at the interview location. They wanted me to remain available by phone and avoid discussing evidence with anyone involved.

I agreed.

At 11:03, Vanessa called me herself.

“Are you coming?”” she asked.

“Why did you send me the contract?””

“Because I can't carry this alone anymore.””

“You've had plenty of opportunities to tell the truth.””

“I know.””

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“Marcus, please. I need you to understand that I never wanted Zoria hurt.””

“Then why did you help create a plan to remove her?””

“Because Rebecca told me the money would help Hannah. She said the scholarship could be transferred without damaging Zoria's future.””

“You knew the scholarship wasn't yours to transfer.””

“I thought the foundation could arrange another award for Zoria.””

“And when that didn't happen?””

Vanessa was silent.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered, “Rebecca said the threat would make the withdrawal unavoidable.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did you write it?””

“No. But I knew someone had sent it, and I helped keep the foundation from correcting the record.””

“Who wrote it?””

“I don't know.””

“Vanessa, I need the truth.””

“I have the original contract. I have emails. I have proof that Richard Vale promised Rebecca money if the scholarship was transferred.””

“Why didn't you give those things to the police?””

“Because I'm afraid.””

“Of what?””

She lowered her voice.

“Richard Vale isn't just a donor. He has connections everywhere. He told me that if I caused trouble, he could make sure I lost my business, my house, and everything I've worked for.””

I looked at the contract again.

“You were willing to sacrifice Zoria to protect yourself.””

“I was trying to protect Hannah.””

“Those aren't the same thing.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I know.””

For the first time since the scholarship dispute began, she sounded less like a woman defending herself and more like someone finally confronting the consequences of her choices.

But remorse wasn't proof, and it wasn't restitution.

“Give everything to the investigators,” I said.

“Don't ask me to keep secrets for you.””

“I won't.””

“Where are the original files?””

“In a storage account connected to my business laptop. There's also a folder in the office safe.””

“Tell the police.””

“I will.””

Then she said something that made me sit up straight.

“Marcus, there's one more thing you need to know. Richard didn't want Hannah to receive the scholarship because he cared about her future. He wanted to use her name to cover a payment that was never supposed to be a scholarship at all.””

I stared at the phone.

“What payment?””

Before Vanessa could answer, another voice sounded in the background.

A man's voice.

“End the call, Vanessa.””

She gasped.

“Richard, I told you—”

The line went dead.

I immediately called Officer Daniels.

He confirmed that investigators were already coordinating with the foundation and would take the new information into account. He instructed me to remain home with the girls.

At 12:40 p.m., an investigator arrived to take a statement about the call and collect the contract through the proper process.

While he worked, Hannah brought down her laptop.

“Dad, I found something.””

She opened an old email from Rebecca.

It was dated three months earlier and addressed to Vanessa.

The donor's contribution must be recorded under the student assistance program. The committee cannot approve it as a direct payment.

Below that, Vanessa had replied:

What happens if the selected recipient refuses to withdraw?

Rebecca's answer was short.

Then we need another reason for the committee to reconsider.

I felt sick.

The contract wasn't simply about transferring a scholarship.

It appeared to describe a plan to disguise a payment through a student assistance program, with Zoria's removal serving as a condition.

The investigator photographed the email and asked Hannah to preserve the original.

Then his phone rang.

He listened for several seconds before turning toward us.

“We've located Ms. Shaw,” he said.

“She's agreed to cooperate with the investigation.””

Hannah gripped the edge of the table.

“Does that mean she's admitting what she did?””

“It means she's willing to provide information. We'll need to verify it independently.””

The investigator thanked us and left.

I thought the worst of the revelations might finally be behind us.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

Richard has the original records. If he destroys them, the truth will disappear.

A second message followed.

And Marcus, he knows where Zoria is going to college.

I stared at the screen.

Across the kitchen, Zoria had finally opened her university acceptance letter again.

She was tracing the university's name with one finger, as if reminding herself that it was real.

I walked over and sat beside her.

“We may need to make some changes to our plans while the investigation continues,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Because of Richard?””

“Yes.””

She folded the letter carefully.

“I'm not giving up.””

I squeezed her shoulder.

“Neither am I.””

Then Officer Daniels called with an urgent update.

Investigators had obtained preliminary evidence that the scholarship withdrawal, the threatening messages, and the proposed payment were connected.

But Richard Vale had just submitted a statement claiming that *I had personally approved the entire arrangement.*

And he had attached a document bearing what appeared to be my signature.
