Chapter 13: The Betrayal Inside My Home

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at the person standing beside Richard Whitmore.

The person who had walked into my home countless times.

The person who had sat at our dinner table.

The person who had comforted me after my father’s death.

My aunt Clara.

My father’s sister.

My mother’s closest friend.

The woman I had trusted almost as much as family.

She looked older now.

Smaller.

But there was no mistaking her face.

My mother’s hand covered her mouth.

“Clara…”

My aunt looked down.

She couldn’t meet our eyes.

That hurt more than anger.

Because guilt was written all over her face.

Richard stepped into the room.

“Everyone is finally together.””

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

He smiled.

“Of course I knew.””

My fists tightened.

“You knew Clara betrayed my father.””

Richard shrugged.

“Betrayal is such an emotional word.””

My aunt looked at him.

“Richard…”

He ignored her.

“Your father was a difficult man.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t talk about him like that.””

Richard smiled.

“You see? That’s the problem. You still think this is about good people and bad people.””

He looked around the room.

“It was always about survival.””

I looked at Clara.

“Why?””

She started crying.

“Charles…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need to know.””

She wiped her face.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

I laughed bitterly.

“My father died.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I pointed toward the recorder.

“You knew what they were doing.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know it would go that far.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You helped them.””

Clara looked at her.

“I was angry.””

The words felt unreal.

“Angry?””

She nodded.

“Your father got everything.””

My jaw dropped.

“You mean the farm?””

“Yes.””

She looked at the floor.

“Dad gave him everything. The land. The business. The respect.””

My mother stared at her.

“And you thought destroying him would fix that?””

Clara started crying harder.

“I thought Richard would force him to share.””

Richard gave a quiet laugh.

“You always loved pretending you were innocent, Clara.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You signed the papers.””

Her face changed.

“You promised nobody would get hurt.””

Richard smiled.

“That was before your brother found out.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Clara.

“You were there that night.””

She didn’t answer.

“You were with my father.””

A tear fell.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

She looked at my mother.

Then at me.

“I went there to convince him to stop.””

“Stop what?””

“Fighting.””

I stared at her.

“You mean stop exposing them.””

She nodded.

“I thought if he gave Richard what he wanted, everything would end.””

“And my father refused.””

“Yes.””

“Then what?””

Clara looked terrified.

“Richard became angry.””

I swallowed.

“What did he do?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Richard interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was steady now.

“You don’t control this anymore.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

A small crack of uncertainty.

I continued.

“My father recorded everything.””

Richard’s eyes moved toward the recorder.

And that was the first time I saw fear.

Real fear.

“You don’t have the complete recording.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He smiled again.

“You found one piece.””

He stepped closer.

“There are missing parts.””

Evelyn immediately looked at me.

“Where is the rest?””

I didn’t know.

But Richard did.

And that meant only one thing.

He had been searching for it too.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

The missing recording is where your father hid his final proof.

Then another message appeared.

The person you trust most knows where it is.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

My mother.

Stephanie.

Evelyn.

Clara.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

The truth wasn’t just about who betrayed my father.

It was about who had spent years protecting the secret.
