Chapter 12: The Person Who Never Left

Nobody spoke after the recording ended.

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

My uncle James had been dead for years.

Yet somehow, his voice had just opened a door to a past nobody wanted me to see.

I looked at Evelyn.

“What does this mean?””

She didn’t answer.

“Evelyn.””

She took a slow breath.

“It means James knew he was being used.””

“But he helped Richard.””

“Yes.””

“Then why leave that message?””

“Because he regretted it.””

I looked at the recorder.

My father’s last days.

My uncle’s betrayal.

Richard’s plan.

Everything was connected.

Except one thing.

“The person who betrayed my father is still alive.””

My voice became quiet.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

My mother looked away.

That scared me.

Because she knew something.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was hoping I would never have to say this.””

My heart started racing.

“Say what?””

She looked at me.

“Your uncle wasn’t the only person there that night.””

The room went silent.

“Who else?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone from our family.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“Our family?””

She nodded.

I looked at Stephanie.

Then Evelyn.

Then back at my mother.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the front door downstairs slammed.

Everyone froze.

A voice called from below.

“Charles?””

My blood ran cold.

I knew that voice.

Richard.

He had found us.

Evelyn immediately turned off the recorder.

“How did he get here?””

My mother whispered:

“He always knew this house.””

Footsteps moved across the floor downstairs.

Slow.

Confident.

Like he owned the place.

Richard called again.

“Charles, I know you’re here.””

Stephanie moved toward the window.

“We need to leave.””

But Evelyn shook her head.

“Too late.””

The footsteps stopped.

Right below us.

Richard spoke again.

“You found your father’s room.””

Nobody breathed.

“How did he know?”” I whispered.

My mother’s face changed.

Because she understood.

Someone had told him.

Someone had been watching.

Richard continued:

“You always were curious, Charles.””

I looked toward the door.

Then at my mother.

The person who betrayed my father was still alive.

And suddenly I wondered something worse.

Had that person been standing beside me all these years?

The doorknob slowly turned.

My muscles tightened.

Stephanie grabbed my arm.

“Charles.””

The door opened.

But Richard wasn’t alone.

A second person stepped behind him.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I had trusted my entire life.

My mother gasped.

“No…”

I stared at the person standing beside Richard.

And everything I believed about my family shattered.

May you like

Because the person who betrayed my father…

Was the person who had helped raise me.
