Chapter 11: The Secret Behind the Family Photograph

I stared at my phone.

“Dad, what did you just say?””

“Emily, I don't have time to explain everything.””

“Daniel is Mom's son?””

“Yes.””

“But she told us she was an only child.””

“She lied.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He immediately signaled for the call to be traced.

“Dad, where are you?””

“Somewhere Richard can't reach me. For now.””

“Why didn't you tell us about Daniel?””

“Because your mother made me promise to keep him away from you.””

“Why?””

There was a pause.

Then my father said, “Because Daniel was involved in something terrible long before Richard entered our lives.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did he cause your accident?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Money. Your grandfather left an inheritance. Daniel believed he was entitled to it. When your mother married me, she convinced him that I had stolen his share.””

“Did you?””

“No. I never touched a penny of his inheritance.””

My father's voice grew weaker.

“Daniel spent years making bad decisions. Your mother kept covering for him. Eventually, he became involved with Richard.””

I remembered the photograph outside the hospital.

My mother.

Richard.

Daniel's driver.

All connected.

“Dad, what is behind the family photograph?””

“The original trust authorization. But that's not the only thing.””

“What else?””

“An envelope containing the results of a DNA test.””

My heart skipped.

“Whose DNA?””

“Yours and Daniel's.””

I stared at the wall.

“Why would there be a DNA test between us?””

“Because Daniel isn't your biological uncle.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Then who is he?””

My father answered quietly.

“Your mother's son from a relationship she had before she met me. But the DNA test revealed something else.””

“What?””

“Daniel is also your biological father's son.””

I couldn't speak.

My father continued.

“Your mother had a relationship with Daniel's father before she met me. That man was also my father.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

Daniel was my half-brother.

My grandfather's son.

And my mother's first child.

The family history I had believed in my entire life was collapsing.

“Dad, why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to have a normal childhood. I thought I could keep Daniel away from the family.””

“Did Mom know?””

“Yes.””

“Did Richard know?””

“He found out when he started investigating the inheritance.””

The call crackled.

Then my father's voice became urgent.

“Emily, you need to get that envelope before Richard does.””

“Why?””

“Because it proves who actually owns the properties. And it proves the insurance policies were part of a larger plan.””

“What plan?””

“Your mother and Richard intended to declare me dead, transfer the assets, and use the children as a way to access the trust.””

I felt sick.

“Why would they need the children?””

“Because the trust was created for all four of you. Richard couldn't access it while I was alive. If something happened to me, the children's legal guardian would have temporary authority over certain accounts.””

I remembered the guardianship document Daniel had presented at the hospital.

Everything suddenly made sense.

“Mom signed Daniel's guardianship papers.””

“Your mother was supposed to be the guardian. But Richard wanted Daniel to take over.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel was willing to do whatever Richard asked.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He was listening carefully.

“Dad, are you safe?””

“I am for now.””

“Come home.””

A long silence followed.

Then my father whispered, “I want to.””

I started crying.

“Then come home.””

“I will, sweetheart. But first, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“The basement.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about it?””

“Richard wasn't only looking for financial records.””

“What was he looking for?””

“The original recording of the night I was attacked.””

I remembered the underground room.

We had found the audio recorder.

“Dad, we have it.””

“No. The recorder you found contains only part of the conversation.””

I frowned.

“Where's the rest?””

“Inside the family photograph.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Detective Harris immediately contacted the technical team.

“Get someone to the Parker residence. We're securing the photograph.””

We arrived thirty minutes later.

The house was surrounded by police vehicles.

The front door had been damaged during the earlier emergency entry.

I stepped inside.

The living room looked exactly as I remembered it.

The fireplace.

The old leather sofa.

The framed family photograph hanging above the mantel.

I walked toward it.

My father stood in the middle, holding Toby when he was six.

I was beside him.

My mother stood at his other side.

Behind us was a small Christmas tree.

I reached up and carefully lifted the frame.

Something rattled.

Detective Harris helped me remove the backing.

Inside was a small black memory card taped to the cardboard.

I stared at it.

“That's it?””

“Possibly.””

The forensic technician placed it into an evidence container.

Then he examined the photograph itself.

“There's something else.””

He turned the frame over.

A small compartment had been carved into the wooden backing.

Inside was a folded envelope.

My father's handwriting appeared across it.

*For Emily.*

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The letter was short.

My darling girl,

If you're reading this, then the people I feared have finally exposed themselves.

You have always believed that family means the people who share your blood. But family is the person who protects you when it costs them everything.

Your mother knows the truth about the accident.

Richard knows the truth about the money.

But there is one person who knows why I survived.

I stopped reading.

The next line was underlined.

Ask Margaret Collins what happened to the original hospital patient.

I looked toward Detective Harris.

“What does that mean?””

He took the letter.

“We need to question Margaret again.””

Before we could move, an officer entered.

“Detective, we've received a report from the hospital.””

“What happened?””

“Someone attempted to access the twins' medical records using a stolen employee identification card.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

The officer held up a photograph from the hospital security system.

A woman wearing a nurse's uniform.

Her face was partially covered by a surgical mask.

But I recognized her.

It was Margaret Collins.

Detective Harris immediately grabbed his radio.

“Find her. Now.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Why would Margaret try to access the twins' records?””

Harris studied me.

“Because she may have been working for Richard all along.””

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Emily, your father isn't the man you think he is.

It was from Margaret.

And underneath the message was a photograph of a hospital bracelet.

This time, the name was not Michael Parker.

May you like

It read:

*DAVID MERCER.*
