Chapter 9: The Name My Mother Tried to Hide

I didn't speak for several seconds.

Grant's mother.

The words made no sense. My mother had died before I had ever heard of Grant Mercer, and yet somehow his family was connected to a trust created in her name.

“Dad,” I said into the phone, “what exactly did Michael find?””

“He's on his way to the hotel. He wants everyone present when he explains it.””

“Everyone?””

“Me, you, Daniel, and Vanessa.””

I looked at Madison.

“And Madison?””

Dad hesitated.

“If she's willing to tell the truth, she can come.””

Madison nodded quickly, although Dad couldn't see her.

“I'll come,” she whispered.

Dad ended the call.

Daniel picked up the flash drive.

“We should give this to Michael without opening it ourselves.””

I nodded.

But before we could leave, Madison spoke.

“There's something else.””

I turned toward her.

She reached into her bag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“Mom made me memorize a name,” she said.

“She said if anything went wrong, I was supposed to contact this person.””

She handed me the paper.

The name was written in block letters.

*ELEANOR MERCER.*

Below it was an address in Connecticut and a phone number.

Daniel studied it.

“Grant's mother?””

Madison nodded.

“Mom said Eleanor was the only person who knew the original agreement.””

“What agreement?””

“I don't know. But I heard Mom say that Eleanor had been promised a share of something when your mother died.””

I stared at the paper.

“Why would my mother promise Grant's mother anything?””

Madison shook her head.

“That's what I wanted to ask Mom. She told me to stop asking questions.””

I slipped the paper into my purse.

“We're going to find out.””

An hour later, we met Dad and Michael in a private conference room at the hotel.

Vanessa arrived last.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried no handbag. Her makeup was immaculate, but the skin beneath her eyes looked gray with exhaustion.

She stopped when she saw Madison sitting beside me.

“You shouldn't be here,” she said.

Madison looked down.

“I need to tell them the truth.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You don't understand what you're doing.””

“I understand enough.””

Michael placed several documents on the table.

“Mrs. Bennett, we've established that the attempted transfer was submitted using a signature Emily denies authorizing. We've also found evidence that company information was shared with an outside party.””

Vanessa sat.

“I'm not answering any more questions without my attorney.””

“That's your right,” Michael replied.

“But I recommend you listen carefully to what we're about to explain.””

He opened a folder.

“Emily's mother established the trust in 2016. However, the trust was amended twice before her death. The second amendment changed the beneficial interests in the family holding company and established a conditional provision for another beneficiary.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Why was I never told?””

“Your wife retained independent legal counsel for her personal estate. She wasn't required to disclose every provision to you.””

Michael turned toward me.

“The original amendment has not yet been located, but we recovered a certified copy from an external legal archive. It confirms that your mother designated a woman named Eleanor Mercer as a contingent beneficiary.””

I looked at Madison.

She nodded.

Michael continued.

“The provision was designed to activate only if certain conditions were met. One condition involved the unauthorized transfer of your beneficial interest.””

Dad frowned.

“So if someone tried to take Emily's shares?””

“The trust would trigger a review of the holding company's ownership structure. Depending on the findings, control of certain assets could pass to an independent trustee.””

I stared at him.

“My mother expected someone to try to steal my inheritance?””

“She anticipated the possibility of coercion or fraud,” Michael said.

“The amendment appears to have been designed to prevent anyone from gaining control of the company through an unauthorized transfer.””

Vanessa let out a sharp breath.

“This is ridiculous. Eleanor has no claim to anything.””

Michael looked at her.

“Why do you say that?””

“Because she and my husband were involved in a business dispute years ago. She has no connection to Emily's mother.””

Dad turned toward her.

“How do you know Eleanor?””

Vanessa's face froze.

For several seconds, she didn't answer.

Then she looked at me.

“Because I met her before I met your father.””

The room fell silent.

“When?”” I asked.

Vanessa folded her hands.

“Several months after your mother died. Eleanor contacted me through a mutual acquaintance. She wanted information about the company and the trust.””

Dad stared at her.

“You met Grant Mercer's mother before we married?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“It wasn't relevant.””

Michael opened another folder.

“Mrs. Bennett, we also recovered records showing that a company associated with Eleanor Mercer transferred money to an investment account controlled by Grant Mercer. Some of that money was later transferred to an account in your name.””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Dad leaned forward.

“How much?””

Michael named an amount.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Those were investment funds. I was trying to protect our future.””

“By hiding them from me?”” Dad asked.

“I intended to explain everything once the investment matured.””

Michael slid a bank statement across the table.

“Then perhaps you can explain why the account received funds from a company that had been listed as inactive for three years.””

Vanessa stared at the statement.

Madison began crying quietly.

I reached for her hand, but stopped before touching it.

I wasn't ready to comfort her.

Not yet.

Michael continued.

“We have enough evidence to justify a formal investigation. But there is one important question we still need to answer.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you want Emily to sign the transfer before her wedding?””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“Because Grant said the opportunity would disappear if we waited.””

“What opportunity?””

She swallowed.

“He said the company was about to be acquired. If Emily transferred her interest, the shares would be converted into cash. The money would cover the debts, and everyone would benefit.””

“Everyone except Emily,” I said.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you would understand once it was done.””

“You wanted to take millions of dollars from me without asking.””

“I wanted to fix everything!””

“You wanted to fix your mistakes with my mother's money.””

She lowered her head.

For the first time, she didn't argue.

Dad stood.

“This meeting is over. Michael, please coordinate with the investigators. No one will contact Grant or Eleanor until we've received legal advice.””

Michael nodded.

But as he closed the folder, Madison suddenly spoke.

“There's a reason Mom was desperate to finish the transfer before today.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She wiped her cheeks.

“Grant told her the company wasn't being acquired. He said the money was already gone.””

Vanessa shot to her feet.

“Madison, stop!””

Madison flinched but continued.

“He told Mom that the only way to recover it was to get Emily's shares. And he said if she failed, he would tell everyone what happened to Emily's mother.””

My heart stopped.

Dad grabbed the edge of the table.

“What did he say happened to her?””

Madison looked at me.

“I don't know all of it. But last night, I heard Mom tell Grant that Emily's mother had discovered the truth before she died.””

Vanessa's face had become ghostly white.

I turned toward her.

“What truth?””

She shook her head frantically.

“Your mother was sick. That's all.””

Madison began to sob.

“Mom, you told me Eleanor had proof!””

Vanessa stared at her daughter as though she had betrayed something sacred.

Then she whispered six words that changed the room.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to die.””

Dad went completely still.

I couldn't breathe.

And before Vanessa could explain what she meant, someone knocked sharply on the conference room door.

Michael opened it.

A uniformed officer stood in the hallway, holding a document.

“Mr. Bennett?”” he asked.

“We need to speak with you and your family about a report filed this morning.””

Dad's face tightened.

“What report?””

May you like

The officer glanced at the paper.

“A complaint concerning the suspicious transfer of assets from your late wife's estate—and a witness who claims her death may not have been entirely accidental.””
