Chapter 12: The Last Promise My Father Made

I didn't remember ending the call.

One moment, Daniel was speaking, and the next, I was staring at my phone while Ethan asked whether I needed to sit down.

My father had followed my mother on the night she died.

He had lied about where he'd been.

And for eighteen years, I'd believed the story he'd told me because it was easier than imagining that the man who taught me to ride a bicycle had been part of something terrible.

“Emily,” Ethan said gently.

“Look at me.””

I raised my eyes.

“We don't know the whole story yet.””

“But he was there.””

“Yes.””

“He lied to me.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed hard.

“Why does everyone keep making excuses for him?””

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he said, “You can love your father and still be angry with him.””

I looked away.

Arthur Bell quietly gathered the papers, giving us a moment.

I pressed my palms against my eyes.

My father had died believing he could take his secrets with him. He'd left me photographs, letters, and memories, but never the truth.

Now I was discovering that the person I'd mourned for eighteen months had been more complicated than I could have imagined.

And I didn't know whether I could forgive him.

Arthur returned with a glass of water.

“There's something else you should see.””

He placed a small cassette tape on the desk.

“Your grandmother gave me this shortly before she died. She said it contained a conversation that might explain why Richard followed Laura that night.””

I stared at the tape.

“Why didn't you tell me about it before?””

“Because Eleanor asked me to keep it sealed until you were ready to hear the truth. I didn't know whether you'd ever want to investigate the case.””

He opened a drawer and removed an old cassette player.

The tape clicked into place.

Static filled the room.

Then my father's voice emerged.

“Laura, please. Just give me until tomorrow.””

My mother's voice followed, sharp with anger.

“Tomorrow? I've given you months, Richard. Vanessa is selling Mother's designs, and you've done nothing.””

“I'm trying to protect Emily.””

“From what? The truth?””

“You don't understand what Vanessa is capable of.””

“Then help me stop her.””

A chair scraped against the floor.

My father's voice dropped.

“If you go to the police, she'll make sure Emily has nothing. The company, the house, everything. She'll destroy us.””

“Then let her try.””

“Laura, please.””

“No, Richard. I won't let our daughter grow up believing that people can steal from others and call it family loyalty.””

My throat tightened.

That sounded like my mother. Fierce, principled, unwilling to accept a convenient lie.

The recording continued.

“I'm going to meet the lawyer tomorrow,” she said.

“If you won't stand beside me, I'll go alone.””

Then my father spoke the words that made me stop breathing.

“If you do this, Vanessa says she'll tell Emily what happened to her mother.””

My mother's voice went cold.

“What does that mean?””

Silence.

“Richard, what does she mean?””

The tape crackled.

Then my father whispered, “She says the accident wasn't the first time she tried to hurt someone.””

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Ethan looked at Arthur.

“Can we verify when this was recorded?””

“The date is written on the label. Two days before Laura died.””

I stared at the cassette player.

“Did my father know Vanessa had been involved in something before my mother's accident?””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“Eleanor believed he suspected it. But she never found out what he knew.””

I rose from my chair.

“I need to speak to Daniel.””

Ethan stood too.

“We'll go together.””

Daniel agreed to meet us at Catherine's house that afternoon. When we arrived, he was sitting alone in the study, staring at an old family photograph.

My father stood in the center, one arm around me as a little girl. Daniel stood beside him, smiling. Eleanor sat in a chair, holding a sewing basket.

It was the last photograph taken before the family began to fall apart.

Daniel looked up.

“You heard the recording.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I knew you would eventually.””

I placed the cassette on the table.

“Tell me what happened that night.””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“Richard called me at 8:45 p.m. He said Laura had left the house and that Vanessa was following her. He wanted me to find them before anything happened.””

“Why didn't he call the police?””

“Because he believed Vanessa had already manipulated the company records. He thought if the police became involved, she'd destroy the evidence and disappear.””

“So you followed them.””

“Yes.””

“And Dad followed you?””

Daniel nodded.

“Richard caught up with us near the highway. Laura's car was already off the road.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Was Vanessa there?””

Daniel looked down.

“I saw a dark sedan leaving the scene. I couldn't identify the driver.””

“Then how do you know Dad was there?””

“Because he arrived minutes later. He ran to Laura's car, tried to open the door, and called for help. He was covered in blood when I reached him.””

I struggled to breathe.

“Was he injured?””

“He had cuts on his hands. He'd tried to pull Laura out of the wreckage.””

For a moment, the room blurred.

My father hadn't simply followed my mother.

He'd watched her die.

“Why did he lie to me?””

Daniel's voice softened.

“Because he believed he could still protect you. He told me Vanessa had threatened to destroy the evidence of the stolen designs and accuse him of causing the accident. He thought that if he stayed silent, he could keep you safe.””

“And you agreed?””

“No. I wanted to go to the police. We fought about it.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“I told him I'd expose everything, even if it destroyed us. He said I didn't understand what Vanessa had done to our family.””

I sat down slowly.

“Then why did Grandma write that you knew where Vanessa hid the designs?””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Because I found them.””

My heart began pounding.

“Where?””

“In a private storage facility outside Atlanta. The original Violet Hour collection, the early pattern books, the correspondence with the manufacturer. Everything Eleanor had been searching for.””

“Why didn't you bring it to her?””

“I tried. But when I returned to the studio, the collection had been moved.””

“By Vanessa?””

“I believe so.””

I stared at him.

“You've known where those designs were?””

“Not their current location. But I know who helped move them.””

“Who?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Your father's attorney.””

I frowned.

“Michael Grant?””

“No. The attorney who represented Richard before Michael became involved. His name was Peter Langford.””

Catherine appeared in the doorway.

“Peter Langford died twelve years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then someone else has his records.””

He reached into his jacket and removed a folded letter.

“This was delivered to me three days ago. It contains instructions for retrieving the final collection archive.””

I opened it.

The letter was typed, with no signature. It listed a storage facility and a locker number.

At the bottom, someone had written a single sentence.

The person who holds the key is the only person who can prove who ordered Laura's death.

I looked up.

“Who has the key?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket and placed a small brass key on the table.

“I do.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn't you tell me before?””

“Because I needed to know whether Vanessa was still watching you. If I gave you the key too soon, she might have taken it.””

I picked it up.

The metal was cold against my palm.

“Then let's go.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.””

I glared at him.

“I'm done waiting.””

He leaned forward, his expression suddenly grave.

“Emily, the archive isn't just about your grandmother's designs. It contains a recording of the conversation between Vanessa and the person who arranged Laura's accident.””

My pulse thundered in my ears.

“Who arranged it?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“That's what the recording will tell us.””

Before I could respond, Catherine's phone rang.

She answered, listened for several seconds, and then slowly lowered it.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Her face was pale.

“Vanessa has announced that the Violet Hour exhibition will proceed tomorrow afternoon.””

“That doesn't matter. We'll have the evidence by then.””

Catherine shook her head.

“It matters because she's invited the press, investors, and the company's board. She's planning to unveil the collection as her life's work.””

I clenched the key.

“Then we'll expose her in front of everyone.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“Why not?””

“Because if that recording implicates the wrong person, Vanessa won't be the only one who falls.””

I stared at him.

“What are you hiding now?””

He looked at Catherine, then at me.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to speak.

Finally, he whispered, “The person who arranged your mother's accident wasn't a stranger.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who was it?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“It was someone who stood beside you at your father's funeral. Someone who has spent the last eighteen months helping you recover from his death.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was staring at Daniel in disbelief.

Then Daniel said the words that shattered the room.

“It was Catherine Whitmore.””
