Chapter 14: The Recording That Exposed Them All

Harris ushered us through a staff corridor as the fire alarm continued to blare. Nurses hurried past with patients, and security guards shouted instructions over the noise.

Olivia clutched the memory card against her chest.

“Where can we go?”” I asked.

“There's a service exit near the loading dock,” Harris replied.

“My officers will meet us outside.””

We reached the stairwell just as a door slammed open above us.

Miller appeared on the landing.

His weapon was raised.

“Put the card down, Olivia.””

Harris immediately aimed his own gun.

“Officer Miller, lower your weapon!””

Miller's gaze never left Olivia.

“You don't understand what you're carrying.””

Olivia backed against the wall.

“My mother died because of you.””

“Your mother died because she wouldn't listen.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“You killed Laura?””

Miller glanced at me.

“No. I helped clean up the mess.””

The admission hung in the stairwell.

Harris tightened his grip on his weapon.

“Put the gun down. Now.””

Miller gave a bitter laugh.

“You think arresting me changes anything? Denise has spent years paying people who make problems disappear. Your department isn't the only place she's bought.””

He shifted his weapon toward Olivia.

Harris fired.

The bullet struck the concrete beside Miller's foot, and he stumbled backward. His gun clattered down the stairs.

Two officers rushed in from the lower landing and tackled him before he could recover.

Miller screamed as they forced his hands behind his back.

“You're all making a terrible mistake! Denise will bury every one of you!””

Harris retrieved the weapon and handed Miller to the officers.

“Take him into custody. Separate him from anyone connected to this investigation.””

Then he turned to us.

“Let's get out of here.””

Outside, an unmarked vehicle waited near the loading dock. Harris drove us to a secure location while another team transported Miller for questioning.

Olivia sat beside me in the back seat, staring at the memory card.

“I've carried this for three months,” she whispered.

“I thought about destroying it more than once.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because my mother died trying to protect the truth. I couldn't let her sacrifice mean nothing.””

I squeezed her hand.

“You won't.””

We arrived at a small police facility outside the city center. Harris arranged for the recording to be copied and preserved before Olivia agreed to play it.

A technician connected the memory card to a computer.

Static filled the room.

Then Denise's voice emerged.

“You promised me the documents would disappear.””

A man's voice answered.

Thomas Hale.

“They will. But Richard wants more money.””

“Richard can have whatever he wants after Sarah is gone.””

My blood ran cold.

The recording continued.

Thomas spoke again.

“And the girl?””

“Emily stays with Robert. He'll make sure she never learns about Daniel or the trust.””

“What if Sarah comes back?””

Denise laughed.

“Then we make sure she regrets it.””

Olivia pressed her fingers against her lips.

The recording skipped, then resumed several seconds later.

A different voice entered the conversation.

My father's.

“I won't let you hurt Emily.””

Denise answered immediately.

“You already signed the papers, Robert. You agreed to the arrangement.””

“I agreed to keep her safe.””

“Then stop asking questions.””

There was a long silence.

Finally, my father spoke.

“What about Laura?””

Denise's response was chillingly calm.

“Laura knows what she signed up for.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the computer screen, trying to reconcile what I'd heard.

My father had participated in the plan. He had signed documents that kept me separated from my mother. He had allowed Denise to control my inheritance.

But he'd also objected to hurting me.

I hated that the distinction mattered.

Harris leaned forward.

“Olivia, do you know when this recording was made?””

“The day before the crash.””

“Can you identify the location?””

“My mother recorded it in Thomas's office. She had been asked to deliver some documents.””

Harris nodded.

“This gives us evidence of a conspiracy, but we'll need to corroborate the voices and establish the authenticity of the recording.””

“Then do it,” I said.

“I'm tired of everyone telling me we need more proof while they keep getting away with everything.””

“We will,” he assured me.

A knock sounded at the door.

An officer entered with an update.

“Detective, we've completed the preliminary interview with Miller. He admits he was hired to recover the memory card.””

“By whom?””

The officer checked his notes.

“Denise Bennett.””

I let out a bitter laugh.

“Of course.””

“There is more,” the officer continued.

“Miller claims Denise received instructions from a man who has been living overseas under an assumed identity.””

Harris's expression sharpened.

“Who?””

The officer handed him a printed photograph.

It showed a middle-aged man standing outside a hotel in Lisbon.

I recognized him immediately.

Thomas Hale.

Beneath the photograph was a second image.

My mother.

She stood beside Thomas, wearing a dark coat and holding a small suitcase.

The date on the image was three months earlier.

I rose so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.

“She's with him.””

Olivia stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Harris examined the date.

“It's possible they're working together.””

I shook my head.

“My mother called me and told me not to trust Denise or my father. She said she was hiding from someone protecting Denise. Why would she be with Thomas?””

Olivia looked at the image more closely.

“Zoom in.””

The technician enlarged the photograph.

My mother's left wrist was visible beneath her coat sleeve.

A dark mark circled it.

A restraint.

She wasn't standing beside Thomas voluntarily.

She was being held.

My phone rang.

An international number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Mom?””

A breathless voice replied.

“Emily, don't say anything. Just listen.””

I stood motionless.

“Thomas has found out about the recording. He's moving me tonight.””

“Where are you?””

“Lisbon. I don't know the address. I'm in a building near the river.””

“I'm coming.””

“No! You need to listen to me.””

Her voice cracked.

“Your father wasn't the person who arranged the crash.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then who was?””

A door slammed on her end.

Thomas shouted something I couldn't make out.

My mother began speaking faster.

“Emily, the original trust documents are hidden in the—”

The call cut off.

I stared at the phone.

Harris immediately began coordinating with international authorities, while Olivia handed over the original memory card.

But I was no longer listening.

My mother was alive.

She was being held overseas.

And somewhere in Lisbon, Thomas Hale had the only documents that could prove what had happened to our family.

Then my phone vibrated with a final message.

It came from my father's number.

Emily, I know where your mother is.

If you want to save her, you must understand why I signed those papers.

A second message arrived.

I didn't sign them to keep Sarah away from you.

I signed them because Denise was holding someone else's life in her hands.

I stared at the screen.

Someone else's life.

Laura's?

Daniel's?

Or someone we hadn't even discovered yet?

Before I could respond, the phone rang again.

May you like

This time, it was my father.

And when I answered, he began to cry.
