Chapter 11: The Daughter Nobody Could Find

Denise agreed to meet us at a coffee shop near the police station.

Detective Harris arranged for an officer to remain nearby, and Marcus insisted we bring no documents or personal belongings that could be lost. By the time we arrived, Denise was already sitting in a booth near the back.

She looked exhausted.

Her hands shook around a paper cup of coffee.

When she saw us, she stood immediately.

"Thank you for coming.""

Marcus didn't sit down right away.

"Before we start, I need to know whether Vanessa sent you.""

Denise shook her head.

"No. She doesn't even know I'm here.""

"How can we trust that?""

"You can't," Denise replied.

"Not yet. But if I wanted to protect Vanessa, I wouldn't be telling you any of this.""

I sat across from her.

"Tell us about Emily.""

Denise glanced toward the window.

"Emily was Vanessa's cousin's daughter. Patricia gave birth to her when she was very young, and Vanessa helped raise her. At first, Patricia believed the arrangement was temporary. Then Vanessa became attached to the baby and started telling Patricia that Emily was better off with her.""

"That's what my mother's letter said," I replied.

Denise nodded.

"But there's something your mother may not have known. Vanessa didn't simply keep Emily. She told Patricia that the adoption was legal and complete. Patricia believed her until Emily was nearly ten.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"How did Patricia find out?""

"She found a copy of the original paperwork. The signatures didn't match. Vanessa had forged some of the documents, and another relative had helped her make it look official.""

My stomach tightened.

The same pattern.

Forged papers. False records. A child caught between adults who believed they had the right to decide her future.

"What happened after that?"" I asked.

"Patricia went to court. She wanted Emily back, but the case became ugly. Vanessa accused her of being unstable. She said Patricia had abandoned her child and only wanted her back because she couldn't stand seeing another woman raise her.""

"Was that true?"" Marcus asked.

Denise shook her head.

"Patricia had made mistakes. She was young and poor, and she trusted the wrong people. But she loved Emily.""

I studied her face.

"Then why did Patricia lose custody?""

"Because she became obsessed. She started watching the house where Emily lived. She called constantly. She once showed up at school and tried to take Emily home without permission.""

Denise looked down at her coffee.

"The court decided she needed supervised contact. Vanessa won the immediate custody dispute, but Emily was eventually placed with another relative after concerns about both women.""

"And then Emily disappeared," I said.

"Yes.""

"Do you know what happened?""

Denise took a deep breath.

"Patricia believes Emily was taken away by someone connected to Vanessa. She spent years looking for her. She hired investigators, contacted old friends, and followed every rumor she could find.""

Marcus rubbed his jaw.

"But why Nia?""

Denise reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a photocopy of an old letter.

"Because Patricia received this six months ago.""

I unfolded it.

The letter was brief.

If you still want to find Emily, ask the Bennetts about the hospital records from the year she disappeared. Someone changed the file.

At the bottom was a name.

Vanessa.

I looked up.

"Vanessa sent this?""

"That's what Patricia told me. She said Vanessa claimed she had finally found evidence that could explain where Emily went.""

"Then why involve Nia?""

Denise shook her head.

"I don't know. But Patricia became convinced that Nia's birth records contained information about Emily. She thought someone in your family had been keeping a secret.""

I felt a cold pressure in my chest.

"My mother was a nurse. She worked at a hospital for years.""

Denise nodded.

"And Patricia knew that. She believed your mother helped hide something.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Did your mother ever work at the hospital where Emily was born?""

I searched my memory.

My mother had worked at several hospitals in Atlanta before settling at the one where I eventually became a nurse. I knew she had worked maternity shifts when she was younger, but I had never asked for exact dates.

"I don't know," I said.

Denise pushed the letter toward me.

"Patricia thought Nia might lead her to Emily. Vanessa told her that if she could get Nia to live with her, she could examine your family's records and force you to reveal whatever you knew.""

I stared at the paper.

"So the guardianship agreement was never just about the debt.""

"No," Denise whispered.

"The money was part of it, but Patricia wanted access to your family.""

Marcus leaned back.

"Then why was Darren involved?""

"Vanessa owed him money. Patricia promised to pay the debt if Vanessa helped her get Nia.""

I felt anger rise again.

"She used my daughter's safety as a bargaining chip.""

Denise lowered her head.

"Yes.""

For a moment, none of us spoke.

Then Denise looked directly at me.

"There is something else you need to know about Vanessa.""

I waited.

"When she first moved into your house, she told me she was only staying for a few weeks. But before she left, she asked me for copies of old family photographs and any letters I had from our aunt.""

"Why?""

"She said she was trying to help Patricia find Emily.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"How long had she been planning this?""

"Months, maybe longer.""

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know she would involve a child. If I had known, I would have stopped her.""

I believed that she was sorry.

But sorry wouldn't erase what Nia had endured.

Marcus asked Denise whether she had any documents that might help establish what happened to Emily. She promised to search her belongings and send anything relevant directly to Detective Harris.

Before we left, she touched my arm.

"Sarah, I know Vanessa is your stepmother, and I know you probably want nothing to do with her. But please understand something. Patricia's pain is real. She lost her daughter.""

I looked at her.

"Her pain doesn't give her permission to take mine.""

Denise nodded, tears sliding down her cheeks.

"No. It doesn't.""

That afternoon, Detective Harris called with an update.

Investigators had obtained access to archived hospital records after learning about the old letter. They were checking whether the records connected Patricia, Vanessa, my mother, and Emily.

He asked me to bring any additional family photographs or documents to the station.

I went home and searched my mother's old boxes.

There were birthday cards, school certificates, and photographs from vacations. Near the bottom of one box, I found an envelope marked *Hospital — 1998*.

Inside were several old appointment cards and a photocopied page from a patient register.

My mother's name appeared beside an entry for a newborn girl.

The baby's name had been blacked out.

But the date matched the year Emily was born.

I stared at the page.

My mother had worked that shift.

And beside the entry was a handwritten note in the margin.

*Temporary placement approved. Contact Patricia before discharge.*

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

"Sarah, I need you to listen carefully. We found an archived record that may explain the connection between your mother and Patricia.""

I held the photocopy against my chest.

"What did you find?""

"The original birth record for Emily appears to have been altered. Your mother's name is listed as the witness to the change.""

I closed my eyes.

"My mother helped change the record?""

"We don't know whether she authorized the change or merely witnessed it. But we need to ask you something.""

"What?""

"The record shows that Emily was discharged to a woman named Vanessa Bennett.""

I stared at the paper.

Vanessa had raised Emily.

Then the detective said the words that changed everything.

"Sarah, the discharge record also lists another child born on the same night.""

My heart pounded.

May you like

"Who?""

"The second infant was registered under your mother's name.""
