Chapter 9: The Secret My Father Was Hiding
Brittany finished her runway presentation to thunderous applause.
She turned beneath the spotlights, allowing the skirt to spread around her like a golden flower.
The judges leaned forward.
One of them whispered something to Jonathan Reed.
Another raised a scorecard.
I stood backstage, barely breathing.
The gown was beautiful.
Not because Brittany wore it well.
Because I'd spent four months making it beautiful.
Every pearl represented an evening I had sacrificed. Every embroidered flower represented a memory of my mother. Every delicate stitch had been completed by my own hands.
And now the woman wearing it was accepting applause for work she hadn't done.
The announcer spoke.
"Miss Brittany Miller, an extraordinary presentation. Please tell us what inspired this remarkable creation.""
Brittany smiled.
"My collection was inspired by the strength of women in my family. I wanted to create something timeless, something that could be passed from one generation to another.""
My fingers tightened around the recorder.
She continued.
"The gown took four months to complete. I personally selected the materials, designed the embroidery, and hand-sewed every pearl.""
One judge nodded.
"Beautiful craftsmanship. Did you work alone?""
Brittany hesitated.
"Yes.""
I stepped toward the curtain.
Jonathan Reed caught my eye and gave a small nod.
It was time.
I walked onto the stage.
The audience turned.
Brittany's smile vanished.
"Emily, what are you doing?""
I approached the microphone.
"My name is Emily Carter. And the gown Miss Miller is wearing is my original design.""
A wave of whispers swept through the auditorium.
Vanessa jumped from her seat.
"She's lying!""
Jonathan raised his hand.
"Mrs. Miller, please remain seated.""
I continued.
"I designed this dress over four months. I have the original sketches, fabric receipts, construction photographs, and the original design registration.""
I held up the folder.
"Most importantly, I have recordings of the people who arranged to have my entry withdrawn and my work stolen.""
Brittany backed away.
"That's not true!""
I looked at her.
"Then why did you tell me backstage that you knew the withdrawal form was forged?""
The audience erupted in whispers.
Vanessa rushed toward the stage.
"Stop this nonsense!""
Jonathan stepped between us.
"Mrs. Miller, you were asked to remain seated.""
She ignored him.
"Emily has always been jealous of Brittany. She has a history of making accusations when she doesn't get her way.""
I looked at her.
"Then let's listen.""
I connected the recorder to the sound system.
The first recording played.
Vanessa's voice filled the auditorium.
"You're nothing but a worthless little seamstress! Brittany deserves this opportunity!""
Then came the unmistakable sound of a slap.
A collective gasp swept through the audience.
My own voice followed.
"Please, Vanessa! That's my mother's silk! I spent four months making it!""
Then Brittany's laughter.
"Thanks for doing all the hard work, Emily!""
Nobody moved.
One of the judges slowly removed his glasses.
Vanessa pointed at the sound system.
"That's fabricated! She edited it!""
Jonathan turned toward her.
"Do you recognize your own voice, Mrs. Miller?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I played the next recording.
This time, her voice was calm.
"Your father signed the transfers. If he changes his mind, I'll make sure everyone knows he approved them.""
Then the man's voice.
"Good. Because the buyers want the original collection, not copies.""
The audience erupted.
Mr. Harrison stood up from the front row.
"Turn that off!""
Jonathan looked at him.
"Mr. Harrison, please sit down.""
"You have no idea what you're listening to!""
I turned toward him.
"Then explain why your company was negotiating to purchase designs that don't belong to you.""
He stared at me.
Vanessa rushed toward the sound technician.
"STOP THE RECORDING!""
Caleb moved away from the controls.
Jonathan raised his voice.
"Security!""
Two security officers approached the stage.
But before anyone could reach Vanessa, my father stood up.
"Wait!""
His voice echoed through the auditorium.
Every head turned.
He walked toward the stage, his face drained of color.
"Emily, turn it off.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at Brittany.
Finally, he faced the audience.
"Because there's something you need to know about me.""
He climbed onto the stage.
"I signed the documents that allowed Vanessa to transfer money from Claire's trust. I approved payments to Miller Creative Holdings. And I knew that some of those designs were being used without Emily's permission.""
My throat tightened.
"Why, Dad?""
He looked at me.
"Because Vanessa told me she had found evidence that Claire's studio was deeply in debt. She said the only way to protect Emily's inheritance was to move the archive temporarily.""
"Did you believe her?""
"At first.""
"And then?""
He lowered his head.
"Then I discovered she was lying. But by that point, I'd already signed too many documents.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Don't pretend you're innocent, Richard.""
He turned toward her.
"I'm not.""
"Tell them what you did!""
He closed his eyes.
I felt my stomach twist.
"What is she talking about?""
My father looked at me.
"Emily, the truth is that I wasn't just helping Vanessa transfer the money.""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
"I signed an agreement giving her temporary authority over your mother's company.""
I stared at the paper.
The date was three years earlier.
My father's signature was at the bottom.
And beneath it was another signature.
Mine.
But I'd never signed it.
I looked up.
"That's not my handwriting.""
My father nodded.
"I know.""
"Then who signed it?""
He looked toward the audience.
His eyes settled on Brittany.
She began shaking her head.
"No.""
My father continued.
"Vanessa told me she had your permission. But I later discovered the signature had been copied from a document you signed when you were twelve.""
I turned toward my stepmother.
"Why would you do that?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely cornered.
Then she said something that silenced the entire auditorium.
"Because your mother never intended you to inherit that company.""
I stared at her.
Margaret Collins rose from her seat.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa turned.
"No, Margaret. Tell them what Claire said before she died.""
Margaret's face went white.
Vanessa smiled.
"Go ahead. Tell Emily why her mother changed the trust agreement at the last minute.""
Margaret slowly stood.
I looked at her.
"Margaret?""
She held the envelope against her chest.
Then she spoke.
"Emily, your mother didn't change the trust because she wanted to protect you from Vanessa.""
She paused.
"She changed it because she discovered that someone inside her own family had been stealing from her for years.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
May you like
Margaret looked directly at my father.
And my father began to cry.
