Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Transfers

The next morning, my father and I sat across from a bank investigator.

I had never imagined I would be sitting in a room like that.

Not because of a stranger.

Because of someone who lived under the same roof.

The investigator placed a folder on the table.

“Emily, I want you to understand something.””

I nodded.

“This wasn’t one transaction.””

My fingers tightened around my coffee cup.

“How many?””

“Seven.””

My father closed his eyes.

Seven times.

Seven moments where Claire decided she could take something from me.

The investigator continued.

“The first transfers were small. Two thousand. Three thousand. Five thousand.””

“Then the car,” my father said.

The investigator nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the paperwork.

“Where did the money go?””

He turned the folder around.

The answer was not what I expected.

The transfers had gone into an account belonging to Claire’s brother.

I frowned.

“Her brother?””

My father looked confused.

“I thought he lived across the country.””

“He does,” the investigator replied.

“Then why was my money going to him?””

The investigator opened another file.

“Because that account was connected to a business.””

“What business?””

He hesitated.

“A company that was recently facing financial problems.””

My stomach sank.

Claire wasn’t helping family.

She was covering a problem.

My father leaned forward.

“Are you saying she used Emily’s college fund to save her brother’s business?””

“That appears to be what happened.””

I felt numb.

The car had only been the part everyone could see.

The real damage had been happening quietly.

For months.

When we got home, Claire was waiting.

She was sitting in the living room.

Like she knew we would return.

“I assume you found something.””

My father looked at her.

“You sent Emily’s money to your brother.””

Claire’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then she recovered.

“He needed help.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“With my daughter’s education?””

“He was family.””

I stared at her.

“And I’m what?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any insult.

My father stepped closer.

“You had no right.””

Claire stood.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

“You weren’t there.””

My father frowned.

“For what?””

She swallowed.

“My brother was going to lose everything.””

“And you decided Emily should pay?””

“I thought I could replace it.””

I felt my heart sink.

“You thought?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

I walked upstairs before she could see me cry.

That night, I packed my college documents into a box.

Not because I was leaving.

Because I needed to remind myself that my future was still mine.

My phone buzzed.

It was Madison.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Emily?””

Her voice was shaking.

“What?””

“I found something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“My mom’s laptop.””

I sat down.

“What about it?””

“She left it open.””

A pause.

Then Madison whispered:

“There are emails.””

My stomach dropped.

“About what?””

“About your college money.””

I stood.

“What do they say?””

Madison went quiet.

Then she said:

“Emily…”

“What?””

“She knew.””

I froze.

“Knew what?””

“She knew your mom created the account.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Madison continued.

“And there’s something else.””

My hands went cold.

“What?””

“She wrote that if anyone ever questioned the withdrawals…”

I held my breath.

“She already had a way to prove Dad gave her permission.””

My father had been right.

Claire had a backup plan.

But what Madison said next changed everything.

Because the proof Claire had been hiding wasn’t real.

It was something she had created.

And the person who helped her create it…

Was someone I trusted.
