Chapter 12: The Final Piece of My Mother’s Plan
I stared at the message.
My first instinct was fear.
My second was anger.
Because after everything Claire had done, she still thought she could control the situation.
My father noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
“Don’t respond.””
“I want answers.””
“You’ll get them through the lawyer.””
But I knew something.
Claire was not reaching out because she cared.
She was reaching out because she was losing control.
The next day, Mr. Harris arranged a meeting.
Not with Claire.
With David.
I was surprised.
“Why would he agree?””
Mr. Harris looked serious.
“Because he believes he still has a way out.””
When David entered the office, he looked nothing like the confident uncle I remembered.
He looked tired.
Older.
Scared.
He sat down.
“I didn’t want things to go this far.””
My father stared at him.
“You stole from my daughter.””
David looked away.
“I borrowed.””
I felt my anger rise.
“You borrowed money without asking?””
He didn’t answer.
My father leaned forward.
“You helped Claire create fake documents.””
David swallowed.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why?””
He looked down.
“Because I thought I could fix my business.””
I shook my head.
“You ruined my future to save yours.””
“I was desperate.””
“That doesn’t make it right.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Mr. Harris placed a document on the table.
“Where is the backup Claire mentioned?””
David looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You’re lying.””
David looked nervous.
“I know Claire kept something.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
My heart stopped.
“A letter from your mother.””
I leaned forward.
“Where?””
David hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Claire has it.””
The room went silent.
My mother’s final protection.
The thing she created in case someone tried to hurt me.
Claire had it.
Mr. Harris looked at David.
“Why didn’t you mention this before?””
“Because Claire told me if I ever revealed it, she would expose everything about me too.””
My father stood.
“Where is she?””
David shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
He answered.
“Claire?””
A pause.
Then his expression turned pale.
“She’s leaving?””
My heart started racing.
“What did she say?””
David slowly lowered the phone.
“She said she’s done running.””
Mr. Harris stood.
“What else?””
David looked at me.
“She wants to meet Emily.””
I felt a strange calm.
After weeks of secrets.
After weeks of lies.
Maybe it was finally ending.
But then David added one more thing.
“She said she has proof your mother knew about everything.””
My father looked at me.
May you like
And I realized the final battle wasn’t about the money anymore.
It was about the truth my mother had spent years trying to protect.
