Chapter 4: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The words on the page seemed to rearrange themselves in my head, but no matter how many times I read them, they meant the same thing.
*DO NOT RELEASE THE REMAINING FUNDS UNTIL EMILY KNOWS WHO HER BIOLOGICAL FATHER IS.*
I looked at my father.
Marcus stood beside the dining table, one hand gripping the chair, his face drained of color.
"Dad?"" My voice sounded painfully small.
"What does this mean?""
He didn't answer.
Daniel Brooks, the attorney, closed the front door behind him and set his briefcase on the counter.
"Marcus, I think you should sit down.""
"I've been sitting down all evening listening to people tell me my wife lied to me."" Dad pointed at the document.
"Now you're telling me my daughter might not be mine?""
Daniel removed his glasses.
"I'm telling you Laura left instructions that require an explanation.""
Vanessa let out a nervous laugh.
"Well, this is ridiculous. Emily is Marcus's daughter. Everyone knows that.""
Daniel looked directly at her.
"Do they?""
Her smile disappeared.
I felt as though the floor had dropped beneath me.
I had Marcus's dark brown eyes. I had his habit of tapping a pencil against his teeth when he was thinking. When I was little, he'd carried me on his shoulders at the state fair and told me I was his greatest accomplishment.
He had taught me to ride a bicycle, attended every school performance he could, and sat beside my mother's hospital bed with me during her final weeks.
He was my father.
He had to be.
"Dad," I whispered, "tell him he's wrong.""
Marcus turned toward me.
His lips parted, but no words came.
That silence hurt more than anything Daniel could have said.
Tyler pushed his chair away from the table.
"This is insane. Mom, tell them what's going on.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know anything about this.""
Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
"Laura left this with me six months before her death. She instructed me to deliver it to Emily when she turned eighteen, but only if certain financial irregularities appeared in the trust.""
"Financial irregularities?"" Dad repeated.
"Unauthorized withdrawals. Missing funds. Attempts to alter the beneficiary designation.""
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She folded her arms.
"You're accusing me because of a piece of paper written by a dying woman?""
"No," Daniel replied.
"I'm investigating because seventy-four thousand five hundred dollars disappeared from a protected inheritance trust, and a purported amendment bears a signature dated after Laura's death.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Daniel placed the envelope in front of me.
"Emily, this belongs to you.""
I stared at the seal.
My mother's handwriting appeared across the front.
For my daughter, when she is ready.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a short letter and a photograph.
The photograph showed my mother standing beside a man I'd never seen before. They were young, perhaps in their early twenties. Mom wore a blue dress and laughed at something outside the frame. The man stood close beside her, his hand resting gently on her shoulder.
He had light brown hair, gray eyes, and a crooked smile.
On the back, my mother had written three words.
Before everything changed.
I read the letter.
My sweet Emily,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped you would never have to face. There are truths I wanted to explain to you myself, but I was afraid of what they might do to the family we built.
Marcus loves you. Whatever happens, never doubt that.
But love and blood are not always the same thing.
My vision blurred.
I pressed the paper against the table.
"Who is he?""
Nobody answered.
I looked at Dad.
"Please.""
He stared at the photograph as though it had opened a wound he'd spent years trying to forget.
Then, quietly, he said, "His name is David Bennett.""
Vanessa's handbag slipped from her shoulder and hit the floor.
Daniel noticed.
So did Tyler.
I turned toward my father.
"You know him?""
Marcus swallowed.
"Yes.""
"Who is he?""
Dad rubbed both hands over his face.
"David was your mother's boyfriend before we got married.""
"Before you met Mom?""
"No."" His voice cracked.
"While we were together.""
The room seemed to shrink around me.
I remembered my parents' wedding album, the photographs of their smiling faces, the stories Dad told about meeting Mom at a charity fundraiser. I'd always imagined their love story as something simple and beautiful.
Now I wondered how much of it had been a lie.
"Did you know?"" I asked him.
"Did you know I might not be yours?""
Marcus looked straight at me.
"I knew there was a possibility.""
I stumbled backward.
He reached for me, but I stepped away.
"How could you never tell me?""
"Your mother told me she wasn't sure. We were already married. She was pregnant, and I wanted to raise you as my daughter.""
"So you just decided I didn't need to know?""
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"From what? My own identity?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"Emily, I was twenty-eight years old. I loved your mother. I loved you before you were born. I didn't know how to handle it.""
I wanted to scream at him.
Instead, I looked down at the letter again.
There was another paragraph.
David does not know everything that happened after he left Atlanta. If you ever meet him, please listen before you judge him. The money in your trust was meant to give you choices, including the choice to discover the truth for yourself.
I lifted my head.
"Does David know about the money?""
Daniel answered.
"That is something we'll need to establish.""
Vanessa suddenly bent down to retrieve her handbag.
"I think everyone needs to calm down. This has nothing to do with the money I moved.""
Daniel stepped between her and the front door.
"Actually, Mrs. Reed, it may have everything to do with it. Laura specifically warned me that someone might attempt to alter the trust before Emily learned the truth.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"You can't prove I knew about this letter.""
"No," Daniel said.
"But I can prove you accessed the trust.""
Dad turned toward her.
"How did you know about David?""
She said nothing.
Tyler stared at his mother.
"Mom?""
Vanessa backed away.
For the first time, I noticed something beyond fear in her expression.
Recognition.
She knew the man in the photograph.
And when Daniel asked whether she'd ever met David Bennett, she gave an answer that made my blood run cold.
"Of course I met him.""
May you like
She looked at me.
"Because he came to our house three years ago.""
