Chapter 8: The Price of My Daughter

By noon, Daniel had made three copies of the video showing Margaret striking Lily.

One went to his attorney.

One was preserved for the authorities.

The third remained on an encrypted drive in his desk.

He didn't want Lily to see it again.

But he wanted to remember every second.

Not because he needed help believing what had happened.

Because he knew someone would eventually try to convince him it hadn't been that bad.

At home, Emma sat beside Lily at the kitchen table, watching their daughter eat a grilled-cheese sandwich.

The refrigerator was stocked with groceries Daniel had purchased that morning. Fresh fruit filled a bowl on the counter. Bread sat openly beside the toaster.

Lily stared at it.

“Mommy?””

“Yes, baby?””

“Is that bread for everybody?””

Emma's face crumpled.

“Yes.””

“Even me?””

“Especially you.””

Lily picked up a slice and held it against her chest.

Daniel turned away, pretending to organize the grocery bags while he fought back tears.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Richard appeared.

The trust records indicate Margaret contacted my office twice last year asking whether a change in Lily's residence would affect the successor trustee provisions. I am arranging an independent audit.

Daniel read the message again.

Margaret had been asking questions about the trust long before the complaint appeared.

He showed Emma.

She put a hand over her mouth.

“Your father suspected her.””

“He suspected someone. Now we need to find out how much she knew.””

Daniel took out the flash drive Richard had given him and opened his laptop.

The drive contained scanned letters, legal correspondence, and several audio files.

One document was dated eleven months earlier.

It was an email from Margaret to an attorney who had never represented Daniel or Emma.

If the parents voluntarily agree to a temporary placement, does that qualify as a change in legal care under the trust?

The reply was brief.

Not necessarily. The trust's safeguards would require independent verification and a review of any financial conflicts.

Margaret had responded the same day.

What if the parents are shown to be incapable of providing a stable home?

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

The attorney's reply warned her that false statements could have serious legal consequences.

Margaret's final email read:

I understand. I am only trying to ensure the child is protected.

Emma leaned closer.

“She was planning this nearly a year ago.””

“Maybe longer.””

Daniel opened the next file.

It was an audio recording of his father speaking with Richard.

His father's voice was weak but unmistakable.

“Richard, if Margaret comes to you with a plan to move Lily, don't assume she is acting out of love.””

Richard's recorded voice answered, “Do you believe she would actually do that?””

“I hope I'm wrong. But she has started talking about what Lily will inherit. She keeps asking whether the money can be released early.””

A pause followed.

Then Daniel's father continued.

“I don't want my granddaughter growing up believing she's a prize to be claimed.””

Daniel stopped the recording.

Emma was crying silently.

“He knew.””

“He suspected,” Daniel said.

“And he tried to protect her.””

His phone rang again.

This time, the caller was Rebecca.

Daniel answered but said nothing.

“Mr. Carter,” she began, “I believe we should speak privately.””

“About what?””

“About a resolution that protects everyone involved.””

“You mean a resolution that gets you access to my daughter?””

“That's a serious accusation.””

“Then explain the payment listed in your documents.””

Rebecca paused.

“I was compensated for professional services.””

“By whom?””

“Margaret.””

“Where did Margaret get the money?””

Another pause.

“I'm not responsible for her finances.””

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

“You prepared a placement proposal, supplied a complaint under my wife's name, and submitted a recording that omitted the context of a private family moment. Now you want to negotiate?””

“I want to prevent this from becoming more damaging.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Rebecca's voice became sharper.

“You have a child who needs stability. Your wife works exhausting hours. You work long hours. Margaret believed she was acting in Lily's best interests.””

“By withholding food?””

“I cannot comment on an incident I didn't witness.””

“You witnessed enough to prepare documents claiming my wife was unfit.””

“I prepared an assessment based on information provided to me.””

“Did you verify it?””

Rebecca didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

“And did you know about Lily's trust?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca said, “Your father's estate is irrelevant to the care review.””

“That's not an answer.””

“Mr. Carter, you should understand that your daughter is the person most likely to suffer if you turn this into a public fight.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Are you threatening me?””

“I'm advising you to think carefully.””

“Here's my advice to you. Do not contact my daughter again. All further communication goes through my attorney.””

He ended the call.

Emma stared at him.

“She sounded confident.””

“She thinks we're frightened.””

“I'm frightened.””

Daniel moved beside her.

“So am I.””

He took her hand.

“But we're not going to let fear make our decisions anymore.””

That afternoon, they attended the review meeting with Richard and a representative from the family services organization.

Margaret arrived wearing a navy dress and carrying a leather folder. Rebecca sat beside her.

The moment Margaret saw Lily, she opened her arms.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Lily immediately hid behind Emma.

Margaret's face hardened.

“Lily, don't be rude.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Do not speak to her that way.””

Margaret turned toward the officials.

“You see? He's poisoning the child against me.””

Richard placed the video evidence on the table.

“We have documentation that raises serious concerns about the circumstances in which the proposed placement was developed.””

Rebecca sat straighter.

“Those materials have not been authenticated.””

“The video has been preserved, and its source is being investigated,” Richard replied.

“We also have correspondence showing that questions about the trust were raised months before the complaint.””

Margaret's face lost color.

Daniel slid the email across the table.

“Do you recognize this?””

She glanced down.

“That's private correspondence.””

“Did you write it?””

Margaret didn't answer.

“Did you ask whether moving Lily could affect the trust?””

She looked toward Rebecca.

Rebecca's lips tightened.

“Margaret, you should not answer questions without your attorney.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Why? What are you afraid she'll say?””

The meeting coordinator intervened, reminding everyone that the review concerned Lily's welfare and that financial questions would be referred for separate investigation.

Richard agreed.

Then he presented the anonymous video.

The room went silent as the clip played.

When Margaret's voice threatened Lily, Emma covered her mouth.

Lily pressed her face into her mother's side.

The coordinator stopped the video before it ended.

“Ms. Carter,” she said carefully, “can you explain your conduct?””

Margaret stared at the table.

“She was disobedient.””

“She is six years old.””

“I was under pressure.””

“From whom?””

Margaret looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca shook her head almost imperceptibly.

Daniel saw it.

So did Richard.

Margaret swallowed.

“I was trying to protect the family.””

The coordinator closed her notebook.

“The proposed placement will not proceed while these allegations are investigated. No change to Lily's living arrangements will be made on the basis of the current submission.””

Daniel exhaled.

Emma began to cry with relief.

But Rebecca remained composed.

She leaned toward Margaret and whispered something Daniel couldn't hear.

Margaret's expression changed from fear to anger.

Then she stood.

“If you won't cooperate, Rebecca, I'll tell them everything.””

Rebecca rose immediately.

“You wouldn't dare.””

“I have the messages!””

“Sit down.””

Margaret slapped her palm against the table.

“You promised me the money would be released!””

The room fell silent.

Rebecca's face turned white.

Daniel stood slowly.

“What money?””

Margaret looked around, suddenly realizing what she had said.

Richard gathered the documents.

“That's enough for today. We will preserve this statement and refer the financial allegations for investigation.””

Rebecca grabbed her handbag.

“This meeting has become completely inappropriate.””

She marched toward the door.

Margaret followed, but before leaving, she turned toward Daniel.

“You think you've won.””

Daniel looked at Lily, who was still holding her mother's hand.

“No,” he said quietly.

“I think my daughter finally has a chance to be safe.””

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

Then she leaned close enough for only him to hear.

“Ask your father what he did to my son.””

Daniel froze.

His father had been dead for three years.

And Margaret had just introduced a name Daniel had never heard before.

“My son?”” he repeated.

Margaret stepped away.

“Some secrets should have stayed buried.””

She walked out.

Daniel turned to Richard.

“What was she talking about?””

Richard's face had gone pale.

“Your father had a son before he married Margaret.””

Daniel stared at him.

“I was my father's only child.””

“That's what you were told.””

Richard closed the folder.

“There's a sealed document concerning that matter. I never expected it to become relevant.””

“Who was the son?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he gave Daniel a name.

“Jonathan Carter.””

Daniel had never heard of him.

But when he looked at the document Richard placed before him, he recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was his father's.

May you like

And the first sentence read:

If Jonathan ever returns, do not allow him near Lily's inheritance.
