Chapter 13: The Voice Behind the Hospital Door
David Mercer arrived at the police station the following morning carrying a black leather briefcase and wearing the expression of a man who had spent the night rehearsing his excuses.
Dad refused to meet him alone.
Daniel accompanied us, and Eleanor insisted on coming because she wanted answers about her daughter's final days. I stayed beside Dad in a separate interview room while the investigators prepared the recording.
Before the playback began, one detective addressed everyone.
"We need to establish what this recording can actually prove. We'll examine its authenticity, identify the speakers, and compare it with the medical records. Until then, nobody should assume it answers every question.""
Dad nodded.
"Play it.""
The recording began with the muffled sound of footsteps and a door closing.
Then my mother's voice emerged from the speaker.
"David, you shouldn't be here.""
David answered quietly.
"I need you to listen to me.""
"I've listened to you for months. You told me the property agreement was legitimate. You told me Melissa was helping me organize the accounts.""
"She was.""
"Then why did I find a transfer authorization with my signature on it when I never signed anything?""
Silence followed.
Then David spoke again.
"Your husband signed it.""
"No, he didn't.""
"You can't know that.""
"I spoke to Michael this morning. He has never seen that document.""
Dad leaned forward.
His fingers gripped the edge of the table.
On the recording, my mother continued.
"You've both been lying to me. I want every original document returned, and I'm contacting my attorney.""
David's voice hardened.
"That would be a mistake.""
"Threatening me won't change my mind.""
"I'm not threatening you. I'm trying to explain the consequences.""
"The consequences of what? Protecting my daughter?""
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then came a sound that made Eleanor cover her mouth.
My mother was crying.
"Please leave," she said.
"I'm tired, and I don't want to argue anymore.""
David replied, "You need to understand something. Melissa has already moved the money. If you expose her, you'll expose me, too.""
"Then you should have thought about that before stealing from a child.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Dad stared at the laptop.
"That was my wife," he whispered.
The detective nodded.
"The voices appear consistent with the known individuals, but the forensic review is ongoing.""
David sat across from us, rubbing his hands together.
"That proves Melissa was responsible for the transfers," he said.
"I tried to persuade your wife to keep quiet because I knew the situation had become dangerous.""
Dad turned toward him.
"You were discussing stolen money with a sick woman in a hospital room.""
"I was trying to prevent a scandal.""
"You were trying to protect yourself.""
David looked away.
Daniel opened his folder.
"Mr. Mercer, why did you make this recording?""
David hesitated.
"Because I realized Melissa intended to blame me for everything. I wanted proof that she had acted independently.""
"Did she?""
David's silence answered before his words did.
"She handled most of the paperwork.""
"Did you help create the company used to redirect the rental income?""
"Yes.""
"Did you knowingly participate in the attempted purchase of Sophia's property?""
David rubbed his forehead.
"I expected to receive a commission.""
Dad pushed his chair back.
"You expected to profit from stealing my daughter's inheritance.""
"I never intended for it to happen this way.""
"How did you intend for it to happen?""
David had no answer.
The detective interrupted before the argument could escalate.
"We have enough to continue the investigation. Mr. Mercer, you'll need to provide a full account of your financial involvement. Your cooperation does not guarantee immunity from prosecution.""
David nodded reluctantly.
Then he looked at Dad.
"There's something else you should know.""
Dad's expression turned cold.
"If this is another attempt to bargain, save it.""
"It isn't. Melissa has been hiding money outside the company accounts. I found evidence of it when I reviewed the documents for the property sale.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Where?""
"A private account overseas. I don't know the current balance, but I have the original transfer instructions.""
Dad looked at him with disgust.
"And you waited until now to mention it?""
"I was afraid she'd discover I knew.""
The detective requested the documents.
David opened his briefcase and produced a set of printed bank instructions. They showed several transfers from the company account into an account held by a business registered under a different name.
The account holder was listed as a woman named Laura Bennett.
Dad frowned.
"Who is that?""
David hesitated.
"Melissa.""
Eleanor stared at him.
"She used another name?""
"Before she married Michael, she used Laura Bennett for some business transactions. I don't know why.""
The detective photographed the documents and placed them in an evidence folder.
Then Daniel asked the question that had been troubling all of us.
"Mr. Mercer, what happened after you left the hospital room?""
David swallowed.
"I left. Melissa was already there when I arrived, but she stayed after I did.""
"Did you see her give your wife anything?""
"No.""
"Did you see anyone interfere with her treatment?""
"No.""
Dad closed his eyes briefly.
The recording established that my mother had confronted David about the financial scheme. It did not establish that either David or Melissa had caused her medical deterioration.
That uncertainty remained painful.
But we finally had something concrete: a timeline, a set of financial records, and evidence that my mother had tried to stop them.
As the interview ended, the detective received a message from another investigator.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"We've located Melissa's personal storage unit. A search has recovered several documents connected to the trust.""
Dad stood.
"What documents?""
The detective checked the message again.
"Original property records, account statements, and a sealed envelope addressed to Sophia.""
My heart began pounding.
"To me?""
The detective nodded.
"Your name is written on the front. Your father can collect it through the proper evidence process.""
Dad took my hand.
We had spent weeks uncovering lies, but the envelope offered something different.
Something my mother had intended for me alone.
Before we left, Daniel received confirmation that the property sale had been suspended and that the bank was reviewing the disputed transfers.
The attempted sale would not proceed while the fraud investigation remained active.
For the first time, Dad allowed himself to breathe.
But as we walked toward the station exit, the detective called after us.
"Mr. Michael, one more thing. Melissa's attorney has contacted us. She wants to make a statement.""
Dad stopped.
"About what?""
The detective's expression was grave.
"She says she can explain the money, the forged documents, and the recording. But she insists she will only speak if Sophia is present.""
Dad immediately shook his head.
May you like
"Absolutely not.""
And for the first time that morning, the detective agreed with him without hesitation.
