Chapter 14: The Woman in the Photograph
I nearly dropped the phone.
"What did you just say?""
My grandfather laughed softly.
"Your mother is alive, Ethan.""
Dad grabbed the phone.
"Stop lying!""
Frank continued as though he hadn't heard him.
"Marcus, you really should have listened to your wife.""
My father was shaking.
"Danielle is dead. I saw her funeral. I saw her casket.""
"You saw what we wanted you to see.""
Patricia immediately signaled for me to keep him talking.
I stepped closer to the phone.
"Where is my mother?""
Frank sighed.
"That depends on whether you can behave like a sensible young man.""
"Tell me where she is!""
"Bring the notebook to Northstar headquarters. Eight tonight. No police.""
The call ended.
I looked at Dad.
He was pale.
"He's lying," he whispered.
But there was uncertainty in his voice.
Patricia shook her head.
"We cannot assume either way. We need to investigate the original medical records.""
Eleanor made another call.
Within an hour, she had obtained access to archived documents connected to the company and the estate.
One particular file caught Patricia's attention.
It was an insurance claim submitted two days after Danielle's death.
The claimant had listed an emergency contact.
A woman named *Diana Miller*.
I frowned.
"Who is that?""
Eleanor searched the database.
Then she looked up.
"Diana Miller was employed by Northstar as a temporary financial consultant. She disappeared shortly after Danielle's accident.""
Patricia checked the employment records.
"Her photograph is attached.""
She opened the file.
I stared at the screen.
The woman in the photograph had dark brown hair, a small scar above her left eyebrow, and my mother's unmistakable smile.
My hands began shaking.
It was Mom.
Or someone who looked exactly like her.
Dad pulled a chair closer.
"That's Danielle.""
Eleanor examined the employment dates.
"According to this record, Diana Miller worked for Northstar for eleven months after Danielle supposedly died.""
"Eleven months?"" I repeated.
Patricia nodded.
"Someone used this identity to access company records.""
Dad looked devastated.
"Why would she do that?""
I remembered the recording.
Mom had said the person who caused the accident wasn't the person who planned it.
Perhaps she had survived the crash.
Perhaps someone had helped her disappear.
But why had she never contacted us?
Patricia found another document.
It was a medical discharge form.
The patient was listed as Diana Miller.
The date was October 16, three years earlier.
The hospital was located outside Savannah.
Dad immediately stood.
"We're going there.""
Detective Bennett arrived shortly afterward.
After reviewing the evidence, she arranged for investigators to verify the hospital records.
The hospital confirmed that a woman using the name Diana Miller had been admitted with severe injuries.
The medical file contained a photograph.
It was unquestionably my mother.
But there was another detail.
The patient had been discharged into the custody of a private security company.
The company was owned by Frank Williams.
Detective Bennett looked at the record.
"This changes everything.""
Dad stared at her.
"Does it mean Danielle survived?""
"It means she was alive two days after the reported accident.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Three years.
Three years of believing she was gone.
Three years of visiting her grave.
Three years of talking to a photograph.
And now we had proof she might have survived.
Detective Bennett immediately requested an emergency warrant.
But Frank had anticipated this.
At 6:12 p.m., Eleanor received a notification.
Northstar's internal system had been accessed again.
This time, the login came from an inactive employee account.
The location was the old headquarters.
Patricia checked the user details.
The account belonged to Daniel.
Dad grabbed his jacket.
"He's there.""
Detective Bennett stopped him.
"You're not going anywhere without us.""
We drove toward the headquarters with two unmarked police vehicles following.
The building was nearly empty.
Most of the company had relocated years earlier.
We entered through the main lobby.
A single office light was burning on the top floor.
Inside, we found Daniel standing beside a desk.
Vanessa sat in a leather chair.
And between them was a woman wearing a dark blue coat.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was thinner.
But the moment she turned around, I recognized her.
My mother.
I stopped breathing.
"Mom?""
She stared at me.
For one terrible second, she didn't move.
Then her hand flew to her mouth.
"Ethan?""
I ran toward her.
She wrapped her arms around me, and I buried my face against her shoulder.
She smelled exactly the same.
The familiar perfume.
The faint scent of lavender.
The woman I'd mourned for three years was holding me.
I started crying.
"Why didn't you come home?""
She held my face.
"I tried, sweetheart.""
Dad stood a few feet away.
His lips trembled.
"Danielle...""
She looked at him.
For a moment, the room seemed to disappear.
Then she slowly stepped away from me.
"Marcus.""
He reached toward her.
She shook her head.
"Don't.""
Dad stopped.
"I thought you were dead.""
"I know.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her eyes filled.
"Because I discovered what your father had planned. I knew he would use you to get to me.""
Frank's voice came from behind us.
"Enough emotional nonsense.""
He stepped out of the adjoining office.
He looked directly at my mother.
"Give me the notebook, Danielle.""
She stood beside me.
"No.""
Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.
"You're making this difficult.""
My mother looked at him.
"You made it difficult when you tried to kill me.""
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"You're lying!""
Mom turned toward her.
"Am I?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
Mom reached into her coat and removed a small recorder.
"I have the original recording from the car. The one that captured everything.""
Frank's face went pale.
He took one step toward her.
"Where did you get that?""
Mom smiled sadly.
"From the person you thought you'd silenced.""
Then the elevator doors opened.
A woman in a police uniform stepped out.
Behind her were two federal investigators.
Detective Bennett raised her badge.
"Frank Williams, Daniel Williams, Vanessa Carter. Nobody moves.""
Frank slowly raised his hands.
But before the officers could approach, Vanessa pulled a document from her purse.
"Wait!""
She pointed at my mother.
"Before you arrest anyone, you need to know something.""
She looked directly at Dad.
"Danielle didn't disappear because Frank threatened her.""
May you like
Then she revealed the secret that made my father stumble backward.
"Your wife disappeared because she made a deal with us.""
