Chapter 12: The Name on the Account

My father didn’t confront Vanessa immediately.

That surprised me.

I expected him to walk downstairs.

I expected shouting.

I expected the entire house to explode.

Instead, he became quiet.

Too quiet.

That was when I realized something.

My father wasn’t reacting anymore.

He was investigating.

The next morning, he sat at the kitchen table with the bank statement.

I watched him compare dates.

Numbers.

Names.

Everything.

“What are you looking for?””

He looked at me.

“Something that proves what happened.””

“Will it help?””

He looked at the paper.

“I don’t know.””

That was the first time I heard him admit he didn’t know something.

Around noon, Rachel called.

My father answered immediately.

“Did you find anything?””

He listened.

Then his face changed.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

“Okay. Send it.””

When he hung up, I asked:

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“Rachel found another document.””

“What kind?””

“A payment record.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“The same one?””

He nodded.

“She found the name attached to the account.””

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

He just stared at the phone.

Then it rang again.

This time, it was Rachel.

My father put it on speaker.

“Daniel.””

Rachel sounded nervous.

“I found out who received the money.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“It was a private investigator.””

My father froze.

“A private investigator?””

“Yes.””

“Why would Vanessa hire one?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because the investigator wasn’t looking into your wife.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Noah.””

I stopped breathing.

“Me?””

My father looked at me.

Rachel continued.

“He was investigating Noah’s birth records.””

The room felt colder.

My father stood.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“Find out.””

“I’m trying.””

My father ended the call.

I stared at him.

“Dad?””

He came closer.

“No matter what we find, remember this.””

“What?””

“You are my son.””

I nodded.

But my mind was racing.

Why would Vanessa investigate me?

What was she looking for?

That evening, Vanessa packed a suitcase.

I watched from the stairs.

My father stood in the doorway.

“Where are you going?””

She zipped the bag.

“Somewhere quiet.””

“You’re leaving?””

“For now.””

He stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because you already decided who I am.””

My father shook his head.

“No. You showed me.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

For a moment, she looked almost sad.

Almost.

Then she said:

“I hope you enjoy what you find.””

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa picked up her suitcase.

“It means your perfect little story about your first family…”

She looked at me.

“Is about to fall apart.””

The front door closed behind her.

And for the first time in weeks, the house was quiet.

But that night, an email arrived on my father’s computer.

From the private investigator.

The subject line had only four words:

*“You need to see this.””*
