Chapter 11: The Person Behind the Mask

The room went silent.

My father’s face changed instantly.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked at me.

“You’re old enough to know.””

I wasn’t old.

Not really.

But in that moment, I felt like I had aged years.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa sighed.

“Your mother had secrets.””

My father stepped forward.

“You don’t get to use her name to protect yourself.””

“I’m telling him the truth.””

“No. You’re manipulating him.””

I looked between them.

“Dad.””

He turned.

I had never seen him so angry.

But I also saw something else.

Fear.

Not of Vanessa.

Of what she might say.

“Let me hear it.””

My father stared at me.

“Noah—”

“I want to know.””

The words came out stronger than I expected.

Vanessa smiled slightly.

She thought she had won.

“Your mother knew she was sick for longer than she told anyone.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My father shook his head.

“That’s not relevant.””

“It is.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She made decisions without telling your father.””

I felt confused.

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t trust him.””

The sentence hit hard.

My father’s voice became sharp.

“That’s a lie.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Is it?””

I watched my father’s expression.

And for a second, I wondered.

Was there something I didn’t know?

Vanessa saw my hesitation.

She continued.

“Your mother was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at my father.

“Of losing control.””

My father laughed quietly.

“Unbelievable.””

“What?””

“You’re taking a woman who was dying and turning her into the bad person because you got caught.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

She was losing control.

My father noticed too.

He stepped closer.

“Tell him everything.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Go ahead.””

Still nothing.

“Tell him about the letters.””

Her jaw tightened.

“Tell him about the phone calls.””

Silence.

“Tell him about Lauren.””

Vanessa looked away.

And that was when I understood.

My father was right.

She didn’t have the truth.

She had pieces.

Pieces she was trying to use as weapons.

I walked upstairs.

I didn’t want to hear anymore.

But before I reached my room, I heard Ava’s voice.

“Noah?””

I turned.

She was standing in the hallway holding her stuffed rabbit.

“What’s wrong?””

I tried to smile.

“Nothing.””

She frowned.

“You said that before.””

I sat down beside her.

“Ava.””

She hugged her rabbit.

“Are you leaving?””

The question broke me.

Because she was only five.

And she was already afraid people would leave.

“No.””

“Promise?””

I nodded.

“I promise.””

She looked relieved.

Then she whispered:

“I heard Mommy talking last night.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she say?””

Ava looked around.

“She said she has one more secret.””

I felt cold.

“What secret?””

Ava shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then she added:

“But she said if Daddy finds out, she’ll lose everything.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Vanessa was standing there.

Watching us.

Her face was unreadable.

That night, my father made another discovery.

While searching through old files, he found a bank statement.

A strange payment.

A large amount of money.

Sent to someone shortly after my mother died.

The name on the account wasn’t familiar.

But the date was.

The day before my mother’s accident.

My father stared at the paper.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Who did you pay, Vanessa?””
