Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Took to Her Grave
My father read Richard's handwriting without moving.
George, I need you to know that the child you have raised as your own was never the only person Elizabeth was trying to protect.
He looked up slowly.
“What does that mean?””
Richard's face had gone gray.
“I don't know what she intended by that sentence.””
“You wrote it.””
“Yes.””
“You signed a letter addressed to me, telling me my wife had secrets about our daughter, and now you're claiming you don't know what it means?””
Richard swallowed.
“I know what I believed at the time. I don't know what Elizabeth wanted you to understand.””
The police officer overseeing the evidence collection interrupted.
“Gentlemen, you'll need to continue this conversation elsewhere. We're documenting these materials, and nobody should remove anything from the property.””
Dad stepped back, but his eyes remained fixed on Richard.
I could barely hear them.
All I could think about was my mother.
She'd known something was wrong. She'd created a company, documented suspicious transactions, and hidden letters for me to find if Karen ever tried to take the cottage.
But she'd also left a warning about my biological father.
And now a sentence in Richard's handwriting suggested there was another person she had been trying to protect.
“Richard,” I said, “did my mother have another child?””
He looked at me.
“I never knew her to have another child.””
“Then what does this mean?””
He lowered his eyes.
“I think you need to speak with George.””
I turned toward my father.
He looked devastated.
“Sarah, I swear to you, I don't know what your mother meant by that sentence.””
“Did you know Richard was my biological father?””
Dad hesitated.
“I didn't know for certain until today. Your mother's letter was the first time I'd seen anything that suggested it.””
“And you never suspected?””
He shook his head.
“Your mother told me you were mine. I believed her because I loved her, and because I loved you.””
His voice broke.
“I have never once regretted raising you.””
I wanted to tell him that I knew.
Instead, I stepped forward and hugged him.
He held me tightly.
“You're my dad,” I whispered.
“Whatever else we discover, that doesn't change.””
He pressed his cheek against my hair.
For a moment, the noise of the police radios and the wind through the trees faded away.
Then Daniel arrived.
He'd driven straight from his office after learning that the police had recovered additional documents from the cottage.
He spoke with the officers, reviewed the inventory, and confirmed that the evidence would be handled through the appropriate process.
When he reached us, he held up a copy of my mother's final letter.
“Sarah, there's something important you need to understand about Northbridge Financial Services.””
I wiped my eyes.
“What?””
“Your mother established the company as a holding entity for several investments. It was intended to protect certain family assets and provide a clear record of how they were managed.””
“Why would she need a secret company?””
“According to the documents we have, she became concerned that Richard's business dealings were exposing her investments to risk. She wanted to separate her assets from his business interests.””
Richard nodded reluctantly.
“That is true.””
Daniel continued.
“The company records also indicate that your mother placed certain assets into a separate trust. We need to determine which assets belonged to the trust, who had authority over them, and whether the later transfers were legitimate.””
Dad folded his arms.
“And the statement about another person?””
Daniel looked at the letter.
“That requires more context. It could refer to another beneficiary, another individual connected to the business, or something else entirely. We shouldn't assume.””
I hated how reasonable that sounded.
After weeks of revelations, I wanted one simple answer.
Instead, every answer opened another door.
The officers finished documenting the materials and secured the box for further examination. Karen was taken aside for questioning about the missing deed and the documents found in the cottage.
Before she left, she turned toward me.
“Sarah.””
I didn't move.
“Please. Just listen to me for one minute.””
The officer allowed her to speak briefly while remaining nearby.
Karen looked exhausted.
“Your mother wasn't the woman you think she was.””
I stared at her.
“Maybe she had secrets. Maybe she made mistakes. But she never deliberately left a seven-year-old child standing in an airport, wondering why her own family didn't want her.””
Karen flinched.
“I didn't think Lily would be so upset.””
“You told her there wasn't enough room on the plane.””
“There were other things going on.””
“Then you should have dealt with those things without hurting her.””
Karen's eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“From what?””
She glanced toward Richard.
Then toward Dad.
Finally, she looked at me.
“From what Michael knew.””
“What did he know?””
Her lips trembled.
“He had records showing that I helped arrange the original transfer from your mother's trust. He said he'd give everything to the authorities unless I helped him get the Cape Cod property.””
“So you planned to steal the house to keep him quiet?””
“I thought I could fix it before anyone found out.””
I felt sick.
“You could have told the truth.””
“And lose everything?””
“You already risked losing everything.””
She looked down.
For once, she had no answer.
Dad stepped beside me.
“Karen, you will have to explain your actions to the investigators. I won't interfere with that process.””
She looked at him desperately.
“George, we can still work this out.””
“No. We can establish the truth. That's different.””
The officer led her away.
As we watched her leave, Tyler appeared beside us.
He'd arrived with Aunt Linda after learning that Karen had been found at the cottage.
“Is Mom going to prison?”” he asked quietly.
Dad crouched in front of him.
“I don't know, Tyler. That's for the authorities and the courts to determine.””
“Do you hate her?””
Dad took a moment before answering.
“No. But loving someone doesn't mean pretending they've done nothing wrong.””
Tyler nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.
“Can I still live with Aunt Linda for a while?””
“Of course,” Dad said.
“We'll make sure you're safe and supported while everything gets sorted out.””
Tyler hugged him.
I watched them and felt a small piece of the family begin to heal.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and turned toward us.
“The financial institution has reviewed the initial records from Northbridge. They've found a second beneficiary account linked to Elizabeth's original trust.””
Dad stood.
“Whose account?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Yours, Sarah. But the records show that it was created before you were born.””
I stared at him.
“How is that possible?””
“Your mother established it while she was pregnant. The account remained dormant for years before being linked to the later trust.””
“What's in it?””
“We don't have the full balance yet. But there is a note attached to the account instructing the administrator to contact the beneficiary only after her thirtieth birthday.””
My birthday had passed two years earlier.
“And nobody contacted me?””
“No.””
Daniel looked down at the document.
“Because the contact details were changed before the account became eligible for distribution.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“Changed by whom?””
Daniel read the name.
“Richard Cole.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I can explain.””
Dad turned on him.
“You'd better.””
Richard looked at me.
“Sarah, your mother asked me to keep that account hidden until she could explain everything to you herself. When she died, I was supposed to deliver a letter and the account records.””
“Why didn't you?””
He looked down.
“Because Karen told me Elizabeth had changed her mind. She said George knew everything and wanted the account closed.””
“Did you believe her?””
“I wanted to.””
“That's not an answer.””
Richard swallowed.
“No. I didn't verify it.””
Daniel collected the documents.
“The bank will need to establish the current status of the account. Until then, nobody should make assumptions about the funds.””
As we prepared to leave, Dad put an arm around my shoulders.
“We're going to find out what your mother intended.””
I nodded.
But as I looked back at the cottage, one question remained.
May you like
If my mother had created a second account before I was born, and Richard had hidden it for decades, what had she been trying so desperately to protect?
And why had Karen been willing to destroy our family to keep it secret?
