Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew She Might Die

The USB drive felt impossibly heavy in my palm.

My father stared at it as though it were a weapon.

"Daniel, you cannot show her that," Marcus said.

The attorney didn't even look at him.

"Your wife left specific legal instructions. Emily is eighteen. The conditions have been met.""

"Those instructions were written when Laura wasn't thinking clearly!""

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

"Funny. That's exactly what you've been saying about every document that contradicts you.""

Vanessa stepped toward the table.

"Give me that drive.""

I pulled my hand away.

"No.""

Her face twisted.

"You have no idea what you're doing, Emily.""

I looked at her.

"Then explain why you're so afraid of a video.""

She opened her mouth, but no words came.

Daniel connected the USB drive to the conference room computer.

A video file appeared.

The filename was simple.

*FOR EMILY — WHEN SHE TURNS EIGHTEEN.*

I pressed play.

For a moment, the screen showed nothing but darkness.

Then my mother's face appeared.

She was sitting in our old living room, wearing the blue sweater I remembered from childhood.

Her hair was pulled into a loose ponytail.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

"Hello, my beautiful girl.""

I covered my mouth.

It was her voice.

The exact voice that used to sing me to sleep.

The exact voice I had spent six years trying not to forget.

"Mom," I whispered.

The recording continued.

"If you're watching this, it means I've either found a way to protect you, or something has happened to me.""

She paused and looked directly into the camera.

"Emily, I need you to listen carefully. Your father is not the man you think he is.""

Behind me, Marcus made a choking sound.

"Turn it off.""

Nobody moved.

My mother continued.

"I discovered that Marcus had been using my identity to obtain loans against property I inherited from my parents. At first, I thought it was a mistake. Then I found the forged signatures.""

She lifted several documents toward the camera.

"Vanessa helped him establish a company that received money from our accounts. I don't know exactly how much they've taken, but I know it was never an innocent financial arrangement.""

Vanessa grabbed the back of a chair.

"She's lying!""

Daniel paused the video.

"Mrs. Carter, I strongly advise you to remain quiet.""

"That's not me!"" Vanessa shouted.

"I never forged anything!""

The investigator wrote something in her notebook.

I looked at my father.

"Is this true?""

He shook his head.

"Your mother was confused.""

I turned back toward the screen.

Daniel resumed the recording.

My mother leaned closer to the camera.

"There's something else. I found a document suggesting that Marcus had been trying to change the beneficiary of your inheritance without my permission.""

She swallowed.

"Emily, I confronted him. He told me he was doing it for the family. But when I told him I would take you and leave, he became furious.""

The room was silent.

"He grabbed my arm. He blocked the door. And when I told him I was calling my sister, he took my phone.""

My hands began shaking.

My father stood abruptly.

"That's enough!""

The investigator moved between him and the computer.

"Mr. Carter, sit down.""

My mother continued.

"I managed to get away. But I don't feel safe anymore. I've spoken to Daniel, and I've made arrangements for you to live with Patricia if anything happens to me.""

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

She had planned everything.

Even the possibility that she might not come home.

Then my mother said something that made me stop breathing.

"If the police tell you my death was simply an accident, please ask them to investigate the vehicle. I believe someone may have tampered with it.""

Vanessa stumbled backward.

My father closed his eyes.

My mother looked directly into the camera again.

"I don't want you to hate your father, sweetheart. I don't want you to grow up carrying anger. But I need you to know that you deserve the truth.""

She smiled weakly.

"Remember the little wooden box under my old bedroom floorboard? The one we used to hide your birthday drawings?""

I nodded involuntarily.

"There's something inside it. I left it there because I didn't know who else I could trust.""

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel turned toward me.

"Do you remember where that box is?""

I wiped my face.

"Yes.""

My mother and I had hidden it beneath a loose floorboard in the master bedroom.

After she died, Vanessa renovated the entire room and turned it into her dressing room.

I had never been allowed inside again.

My father looked at me.

"That room was remodeled years ago. There's nothing there.""

I stared at him.

"How would you know?""

He didn't answer.

The investigator closed her notebook.

"Mr. Carter, we're going to need you to accompany us for further questioning.""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.

"You don't understand! Your mother was going to destroy everything!""

I pulled free.

"What did you do?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

For the first time, she wasn't looking at me with disgust.

She was looking at me with fear.

"I didn't touch the car," she whispered.

Nobody had accused her of touching the car.

The investigator immediately looked up.

"Mrs. Carter, what car are you referring to?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then she looked at Marcus.

He stared at her with an expression I had never seen before.

Hatred.

"Vanessa," he said quietly.

"Don't.""

May you like

But she had already said too much.

And I knew the truth wasn't finished coming out.
