Chapter 5: The Name on the Adoption Papers
My father stared at the photograph as if the paper had turned to fire in his hands.
"Where did you get this?"" he asked.
Margaret sat down slowly.
"Catherine sent it with the letter. She told me she had finally found someone who could help her protect Emily.""
Dad turned the photograph over.
His face changed.
I had never seen him look so frightened.
"What?"" I asked.
"What is it?""
He didn't answer.
He kept staring at the handwriting.
I reached for the photograph, but he pulled it closer to himself.
"Emily, give me a minute.""
"No. I've waited seventeen years for a minute. I'm done waiting.""
My voice cracked, but I held his gaze.
"Why is Mom warning you about Vanessa?""
Dad's shoulders sagged.
"I don't know.""
Margaret leaned forward.
"Michael, look at the date.""
He did.
Then he whispered, "This was taken in 2010.""
I looked between them.
"That's one year after Mom supposedly died.""
"Yes," Margaret said.
Dad pressed his fingers against his forehead.
"I remember that courthouse.""
The room fell silent.
I stared at him.
"You were there?""
He nodded slowly.
"Vanessa and I were already married. We had just finalized some financial arrangements involving the house and your trust.""
Margaret's expression sharpened.
"What trust?""
Dad looked confused.
"Your mother established one before she died. At least, that's what my attorney told me. It was supposed to provide for Emily's education.""
Margaret shook her head.
"Catherine established a trust before she disappeared. It was meant to protect Emily's inheritance until her eighteenth birthday.""
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
"My inheritance?""
Dad looked at me.
"Your mother owned a small property in Savannah and had investments from her family. I was told everything had been transferred to a trust for you.""
"Who managed it?""
Dad's silence answered before he did.
"Vanessa.""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Oh, Catherine.""
I gripped the edge of the desk.
"So Vanessa destroyed my dress because she was afraid I'd meet you. She was afraid I'd learn about the money.""
"Possibly," Margaret said.
"But I don't believe money was the only reason.""
She removed a thick stack of documents.
"These are copies of the original trust records. For years, I believed Catherine had left everything to Emily. Last month, I hired an attorney to help me locate the records.""
She slid one page toward Dad.
"Someone changed the beneficiary designation three years ago.""
Dad read the document.
His lips parted.
"This can't be right.""
"What does it say?"" I demanded.
He turned the page toward me.
The document stated that the trust's remaining assets would be transferred to Madison Carter upon my eighteenth birthday, provided that I had been legally adopted by Michael Carter and that no competing claim to my mother's estate was filed.
Madison's name appeared in bold letters.
Mine appeared nowhere on the beneficiary line.
I felt sick.
"Why would Mom leave everything to Madison?""
"She wouldn't," Margaret said.
"Catherine never even met Madison.""
Dad rose from his chair.
"This document has to be fraudulent.""
"That's what my attorney suspects," Margaret replied.
"But there's a problem. The signature resembles Catherine's.""
I looked at the bottom of the page.
My mother's name had been signed in flowing black ink.
Beside it was another signature.
Vanessa Carter.
I recognized it from the birthday cards she signed every year.
"She signed this?""
Margaret nodded.
"She certified that Catherine had authorized the change.""
Dad slammed the document onto the desk.
"Vanessa told me the trust had been closed!""
Principal Reynolds, who had remained near the door, shifted uneasily.
"Mr. Carter, should I contact the police?""
"Not yet," Dad replied.
"I need to understand what I'm looking at.""
Margaret took a breath.
"There's another issue. The adoption paperwork.""
She laid out a photocopy of a legal document dated shortly after my first birthday.
It stated that I had been adopted by Michael Carter following the death of my biological mother.
But a red stamp across the bottom read: *PETITION WITHDRAWN.*
Dad stared at it.
"I never adopted Emily.""
Margaret nodded.
"That's what I thought.""
I felt the floor tilt beneath me.
"Then why does my birth certificate say Carter?""
"Because your father acknowledged you as his biological daughter," Margaret explained.
"But the adoption paperwork was submitted under circumstances that remain unclear. The petition was later withdrawn.""
Dad looked as though he might be sick.
"I never signed this.""
Margaret studied the signature.
"Then someone used your name.""
I thought about Vanessa's careful smile, the way she always made sure every family photograph included Madison beside Dad while I stood at the edge.
I thought about the countless times she'd reminded me that I was fortunate to live in her house.
"She always said I was lucky she let me stay," I whispered.
Dad turned toward me.
"Emily, this is your home. You never needed her permission.""
"But she made me feel like I did.""
His face crumpled.
"I'm sorry.""
It was the first time he had ever apologized to me without adding an excuse.
For a moment, I wanted to collapse into his arms and let him promise that everything would be fine.
Then Margaret spoke again.
"There's one more thing you need to see.""
She opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a letter written by my mother, dated just weeks before her disappearance.
The first line made my hands go cold.
Margaret, if Emily is ever told that I died in an accident, please don't believe it without proof.
I read the sentence again.
Then I looked at Dad.
"Did you ever see this letter?""
"No.""
Margaret turned the page.
"Catherine wrote that she was afraid someone was monitoring her. She said she had discovered irregularities in the trust and intended to confront the people responsible.""
"People?"" I asked.
Margaret nodded.
"She never named them in the letter. But she did mention one person she feared most.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Who?""
Margaret swallowed.
"Vanessa.""
Before anyone could respond, the office door opened.
A school security officer stood in the doorway.
"Mr. Carter? I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's a woman downstairs demanding to see Emily.""
Dad frowned.
"Who is she?""
May you like
The officer glanced at Margaret.
"She says she's Vanessa Carter. And she's threatening to have the school shut down if you don't bring Emily outside immediately.""
