Chapter 7: My Father’s Voice

Nobody spoke.

The recorder hissed softly in my hand.

Then Dad’s voice came through again.

Clearer this time.

“Vanessa, you shouldn’t be here.””

My fingers tightened around the device.

I looked at my father.

He looked sick.

“Dad?””

“I don’t understand.””

But Vanessa’s recorded voice continued.

“You stopped answering me.””

“I told you this was over.””

“You don’t get to decide that alone.””

Nathan stepped closer to the recorder.

Daniel raised one hand.

“Let it play.””

There was movement on the recording.

A door closing.

Then Mom’s breathing.

Quiet.

Uneven.

She must have been hiding nearby.

Vanessa said, “You promised you’d help me.””

Dad’s recorded voice answered.

“I already did.””

“How?””

“I gave you money.””

“That wasn’t enough.””

Dad beside me whispered, “Oh God.””

I turned on him.

“You knew her.””

He stared at the floor.

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

“How?””

“Emily—”

“Let it finish.””

Mom’s recording continued.

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“You have a house worth hundreds of thousands.””

“It isn’t mine.””

“Your wife is dying.””

Dad flinched.

The recorded version of him went silent.

Vanessa continued.

“When Laura is gone, you’ll control everything.””

“No.””

“You’re her husband.””

“The house is protected.””

“For the daughter?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“So Laura trusts a teenager more than her own husband.””

“That’s enough.””

“I’m just saying what you’re thinking.””

“No. You’re saying what you want me to think.””

A chair scraped.

Then Dad’s voice became firmer.

“Stay away from my family.””

The recording went quiet.

A door slammed.

Several seconds passed.

Then Mom spoke.

Her voice trembled.

“September twenty-second.””

Dad covered his face.

Mom continued.

“The man speaking with Vanessa Hale was Richard.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“I don’t know how long they have known each other. I don’t know why Richard gave her money. I don’t know why she believes he can give her access to my home.””

Dad looked at me.

“I never told her that.””

I couldn’t answer.

Mom’s voice filled the unit.

“I want to believe there is an explanation.””

A pause.

“I still love my husband.””

That broke him.

Dad sat down and bent forward, crying silently.

Mom continued.

“But Emily cannot depend on what I want to believe. She needs protection based on facts.””

Daniel looked down.

“That’s why she amended the trust.””

The recording ended.

I stared at Dad.

“You told us you didn’t know Vanessa then.””

“I didn’t know that was her last name.””

“What?””

“I knew her as Vanessa Cole.””

Nathan’s head snapped up.

“Cole?””

Dad nodded slowly.

“She told me Nathan was her brother.””

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“She’s my ex-wife.””

The unit seemed to shrink around us.

“What?”” I whispered.

Nathan looked ashamed.

“We were married for six years.””

Dad stood.

“She told me you were her brother.””

“And she told me you were a client.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Everybody slow down.””

I felt like screaming.

Instead, I looked at Dad.

“Start from the beginning.””

He wiped his face.

“About two months before your mother died, I met Vanessa at a hotel bar.””

My stomach turned.

Dad saw my expression.

“Nothing happened.””

“Then why were you giving her money?””

“She approached me crying. She said her brother had gambling debts and dangerous people were threatening her.””

Nathan shook his head.

“That never happened.””

“I know that now.””

“How much?”” I asked.

Dad hesitated.

“Three thousand dollars.””

I laughed bitterly.

Of course.

Money again.

Always money.

“She knew Mom was dying?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I mentioned it.””

Nathan swore under his breath.

Dad continued quickly.

“I was exhausted. Laura was sick. I was traveling between the hospital, work and home. Vanessa acted like someone who understood.””

“Did you meet her again?””

“Yes.””

“How many times?””

“Four. Maybe five.””

I stared at him.

“Did Mom know?””

“I didn’t think so.””

“She recorded you in our house.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“That day Vanessa showed up unexpectedly. I told her to leave.””

“But you let her inside.””

“For five minutes.””

I stepped back.

My father suddenly looked different to me.

Not evil.

Not innocent either.

Human.

Weak.

And weakness had opened our front door.

Daniel picked up the recorder.

“There’s another file.””

The date was September twenty-sixth.

Four days later.

Mom’s final recording.

I pressed play.

Her breathing sounded worse.

“Emily, if you hear this, please don’t hate your father.””

Dad broke down again.

I couldn’t look at him.

“Richard made a terrible mistake trusting someone who approached him during the worst period of our lives. But I have found no evidence that he tried to take your home.””

I exhaled.

Mom had known.

She had investigated him.

And still protected him from the worst conclusion.

Then her voice changed.

“There is, however, something Richard does not know.””

Nathan went rigid.

Mom continued.

“Vanessa Hale did not approach him by accident.””

I looked at Nathan.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Mom said, “Someone paid Vanessa to get close to my husband.””

Dad stood.

“Who?””

The recording crackled.

“I found the first payment.””

Paper rustled.

“The account belongs to—”

The audio cut out.

“No!””

I pressed buttons.

Nothing.

The file ended.

Daniel took the recorder.

“There may be supporting documents.””

We tore through the remaining boxes.

Ten minutes later, Nathan opened CORRESPONDENCE.

He stopped.

Inside was a photograph.

Vanessa sat at a restaurant table.

Across from her was an older man.

Dad didn’t recognize him.

Daniel did.

His face went pale.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.””

“Who is he?”” I demanded.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, that’s your mother’s older brother.””

My uncle.

The man I hadn’t seen since Mom’s funeral.

“Michael Mercer.””
