Chapter 14: Vanessa’s Last Secret

We did not go alone.

Daniel insisted.

So did Dad.

Vanessa agreed to meet us in the lobby of a downtown hotel, surrounded by cameras, employees and other guests.

When we arrived, she was sitting in the corner.

No makeup.

Hair pulled back.

A manila folder rested on her lap.

She looked smaller somehow.

Not innocent.

Just exposed.

Dad stopped ten feet away.

Vanessa stood.

“Richard.””

“Don’t.””

One word.

She looked at me.

“I brought everything.””

“Why now?””

“Because Michael threatened me.””

I folded my arms.

“And that suddenly gave you a conscience?””

Her eyes dropped.

“No.””

At least she didn’t pretend.

“It made me realize he was going to blame everything on me.””

Daniel held out his hand.

“The agreement.””

Vanessa hesitated.

“What happens to me?””

Daniel lowered his hand.

“I’m not your attorney.””

“Could I be charged?””

“Yes.””

Her face tightened.

Dad stared at her.

“You stole from Emily for three years.””

“I know.””

“You lied to me for seven.””

“I know.””

“You stole Laura’s letters.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I know.””

Dad’s expression didn’t change.

“Then stop asking what happens to you.””

Vanessa flinched.

I looked at the folder.

“Give it to Daniel.””

She did.

Inside was a six-page contract.

The first page carried Michael Mercer’s company name.

The agreement described Vanessa as a “consultant.””

Her job?

Establish a relationship with Richard Bennett.

Gather information concerning the Laura Bennett Family Trust.

Encourage Richard to question Laura’s estate planning.

And, if necessary, create documentation supporting Michael’s future property claim.

Dad looked nauseated.

Daniel turned pages.

Then stopped.

“Here.””

A section added years later.

PHASE TWO.

If Emily Bennett remained in the property after age twenty-two, Vanessa would collect monthly payments and maintain records characterizing Emily as a tenant.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

“You knew exactly why you were charging me.””

“Yes.””

Every excuse vanished.

Responsibility.

Groceries.

Adulthood.

All lies.

“Why $800?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Michael said it needed to look realistic.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And the money?””

“He told me I could keep it.””

“Then you sent most of it to Nathan.””

Nathan had come with us.

He looked away.

Vanessa nodded.

“I felt guilty.””

I laughed.

“You felt guilty, so you stole my money and gave it to your ex-husband?””

“I know how stupid that sounds.””

“It doesn’t sound stupid.””

I stepped closer.

“It sounds cruel.””

She lowered her eyes.

“You made me think Dad would throw me out.””

“I’m sorry.””

“You made me miss Kayla’s wedding because I couldn’t afford it.””

“I’m sorry.””

“You watched me drive a car with no air conditioning while handing you almost ten thousand dollars a year.””

Her shoulders shook.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted her apology to fix something.

It didn’t.

Dad asked, “Why marry me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

For once, she seemed unable to manufacture an answer.

“Because somewhere along the way, the assignment stopped feeling like an assignment.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

“You married a grieving widower whose wife you helped terrorize.””

“I tried to back out.””

“And then spent years finishing Michael’s plan.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Dad nodded.

“Then whatever you felt for me wasn’t love.””

She started crying harder.

He walked away.

Daniel continued reading.

“There’s an addendum.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Michael made me sign it three years ago.””

The addendum promised Vanessa $100,000 if Michael successfully gained control of the property.

I stared at her.

“There it is.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“One hundred thousand dollars.””

“I never got it.””

“That’s your defense?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“There is no defense.””

That was the first honest thing she had said that felt complete.

Daniel photographed every page.

“Will you testify?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Yes.””

“Under oath?””

“Yes.””

“And state Michael instructed you to collect rent?””

“Yes.””

“And that Emily never knowingly agreed to surrender any ownership rights?””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“What about the tenancy document?””

“I switched the first page.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“Emily thought she was signing household reimbursement paperwork.””

My stomach twisted.

Daniel nodded.

“Say exactly that tomorrow.””

A voice behind us said, “She won’t.””

Vanessa went white.

Michael stood near the hotel entrance.

Two men were beside him.

Not threatening.

Just attorneys.

He smiled.

“You always were weak, Vanessa.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Michael.””

Michael ignored him.

His eyes moved to me.

“You look like Laura.””

“Don’t say her name.””

His smile faded.

“This house destroyed my family long before you were born.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“You did.””

Something flashed across his face.

Anger.

Then it disappeared.

He lifted a folder.

“You think one old contract saves you?””

Daniel frowned.

“What is that?””

Michael smiled again.

“The document your mother never wanted Emily to see.””

He handed Daniel a copy.

Daniel read the first page.

His expression changed.

Dad stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It’s a letter from Laura.””

My heart stopped.

Michael said quietly:

“Your mother considered selling the house.””

May you like

He smiled.

“And giving me half.””
