Chapter 6: The Sister Who Betrayed Me
I called my sister before I could talk myself out of it.
Rachel answered on the second ring.
"Lucas? Hey. Is everything okay?""
I stood beside the hotel window, watching headlights slide across the wet Dallas streets.
"Did you give Vanessa a statement about my parenting?""
Silence.
Then Rachel sighed.
"She told you.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Lucas, I was trying to help.""
"Help whom?""
"Everyone!""
Her voice rose, and I heard the familiar frustration that had followed us since childhood.
Rachel was three years older than me. When our father died, she had taken it upon herself to manage family decisions, even when nobody had asked her to. She could make a suggestion sound like an order and an accusation sound like concern.
I had always loved her.
I had also spent most of my life trying not to disappoint her.
"What did you tell Vanessa?"" I asked.
"I told her you work too much and that Lily needs more stability.""
"Did you tell her I lose control around my daughter?""
"I said you get overwhelmed.""
"Have you ever seen me hurt Lily?""
"No!""
"Have you ever seen me neglect her?""
"That's not what I said.""
"Then what exactly did you say?""
Rachel exhaled sharply.
"She called me crying. She said you were becoming unpredictable, that you were threatening to throw her out, and that she was afraid you'd take Lily away from her without warning.""
I closed my eyes.
"Rachel, Vanessa slapped Lily today because she asked for a coat.""
My sister went quiet.
"What?""
"You heard me.""
"She wouldn't do that.""
"I watched her do it.""
"Lucas, maybe there was a misunderstanding.""
I pulled the phone away from my ear for a moment, stunned by the words.
"My daughter was crying with a handprint on her face. What misunderstanding could explain that?""
Rachel's voice softened.
"I'm not defending hitting a child. I'm saying you need to calm down before you destroy your marriage.""
"My marriage isn't the priority right now. Lily is.""
"Vanessa has two daughters of her own. She knows how to care for children.""
"Knowing how to buy your children designer handbags doesn't mean you know how to care for mine.""
Rachel said nothing.
I looked through the glass at the city below.
"Did Vanessa tell you about the money?""
"What money?""
"The money I sent her every month for Lily. The money she spent on herself and her daughters.""
Rachel inhaled sharply.
"Lucas, I don't know anything about that.""
"Did she tell you about the documents?""
"What documents?""
I believed her confusion was genuine, but I wasn't ready to trust it.
"Daniel says there's a legal petition involving Lily. Your statement is being used to support it.""
Rachel's voice trembled.
"She told me it was just a family assessment.""
"Did you read what you signed?""
"I didn't sign anything.""
I stopped breathing for a moment.
"What do you mean?""
"Vanessa asked me questions over the phone. She said she needed a character reference for a family matter. I told her you worked long hours and that sometimes you seemed exhausted. That was all.""
"Then why does my lawyer have a witness statement under your name?""
Rachel began breathing faster.
"Lucas, I never signed a statement.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"Are you sure?""
"Of course I'm sure!""
I gripped the window frame.
"Rachel, someone may have used your name.""
For several seconds, I heard nothing but her breathing.
Then she whispered, "Oh, God.""
"What's wrong?""
"I sent Vanessa an email a few weeks ago. She asked me to write down what I remembered about your schedule and the times Lily stayed with me. She said it would help her organize a school application.""
"Did you send it?""
"Yes.""
"What did you write?""
"That you were often at work. That Lily sometimes stayed overnight with me when you had early site meetings. Nothing else.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Did you attach your signature?""
"No. I just sent an email.""
"Forward it to Daniel immediately.""
"Lucas, what is happening?""
I thought of Lily's red cheek, the stolen money, the threatening message, and the document bearing my signature.
"I don't know yet," I said.
"But I think Vanessa is building a case against me.""
Rachel began to cry.
"I never wanted that.""
"Then help me establish the truth.""
"I will.""
After we hung up, I called Daniel and told him everything.
He listened without interrupting.
"This could be important," he said.
"Your sister's email may help establish how her words were used. Send me her contact information, and ask her not to delete any correspondence.""
"What happens now?""
"We prepare a factual response. We also need to document the condition Lily was in when you left the house, including her account of previous incidents. If there are concerns about abuse, we need to involve the appropriate professionals.""
I looked toward the bed.
Lily was awake now, sitting cross-legged beneath the hotel blanket with her stuffed rabbit in her lap.
"Can I ask you something, Daddy?""
I sat beside her.
"Anything.""
"Is Aunt Rachel mad at me?""
"No, baby. Why would you think that?""
She rubbed one ear of the rabbit between her fingers.
"Mom Vanessa said Aunt Rachel thinks I'm making trouble for everyone.""
My heart sank.
"When did she tell you that?""
"Last week. Aunt Rachel came over while you were at work. Mom Vanessa said everyone was tired of me asking for things.""
I struggled to keep my voice steady.
"Did Aunt Rachel say that to you herself?""
Lily shook her head.
"She just hugged me. She brought me a book.""
I remembered Rachel arriving at our house with a children's mystery novel, staying for coffee, and leaving before I returned from a job site.
I had thought it was a normal visit.
Now I wondered what Vanessa had said after my sister left.
Lily leaned against me.
"Daddy, if I hadn't asked for a coat, would everybody still be happy?""
I pulled her into my arms.
"No. And listen to me carefully. You didn't cause any of this.
Adults are responsible for their own choices. You are allowed to ask for what you need.""
She rested her head against my chest.
"Even if somebody gets mad?""
"Especially then.""
For the first time all evening, her shoulders relaxed.
I stayed beside her until she fell asleep.
Then I returned to the desk and opened my laptop.
Rachel had forwarded her email to Daniel and copied me.
The message was brief. She had described my work schedule, confirmed that Lily sometimes stayed with her, and explained that I always arranged the visits in advance.
There was nothing about anger, instability, or neglect.
But the attachment Vanessa had submitted to the legal filing contained several additional paragraphs.
According to the document, Rachel had witnessed me shouting at Lily, leaving her unsupervised, and prioritizing work over her safety.
The statement even included a date.
A Saturday in August.
I remembered that day clearly. Rachel had taken Lily to a children's museum while I inspected a construction site. I had picked Lily up afterward, and she had spent the entire ride home telling me about a dinosaur exhibit.
I had never shouted at her.
I had never left her alone.
Someone had taken my sister's ordinary email and transformed it into something that could damage my relationship with my daughter.
I forwarded both documents to Daniel.
His reply arrived minutes later.
This discrepancy is significant. Keep the original email and all metadata. We may need an expert to assess the document's authenticity.
I leaned back in my chair.
Then I noticed something else.
The statement was dated August 19.
But Rachel's email had been sent on August 24.
The alleged witness statement existed five days before the email Vanessa claimed it came from.
I stared at the dates.
That wasn't a misunderstanding.
Someone had prepared the statement before Rachel had even sent her account of the events.
My phone rang.
Rachel's name appeared on the screen.
I answered.
"Did you find something?""
"I searched my old messages," she said breathlessly.
"Lucas, I found another email from Vanessa.""
"What does it say?""
"She sent it the day before the statement was dated.""
"Read it to me.""
Rachel paused.
"She says she needs my help with a family matter. Then she writes, 'Once the paperwork is filed, Lucas won't be able to interfere with the arrangement.''"
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped across the floor.
"What arrangement?""
"I don't know. But there's an attachment.""
"What's in it?""
"I haven't opened it yet.""
"Send it to Daniel. Don't click anything else.""
"I will.""
Rachel's voice broke.
"Lucas, there's something else. I remember Vanessa asking me whether you had ever mentioned changing Lily's last name or moving her trust funds. I thought she was just curious.""
I stared at the sleeping child on the bed.
"Why would she ask you that?""
"I don't know.""
Then Rachel whispered, "Lucas, the email has another recipient.""
"Who?""
She read the address aloud.
I didn't recognize the name, but Daniel did when I sent it to him.
He called me back almost immediately.
"Lucas, that recipient is associated with a private family-services consultancy. I can't establish their role from an email address alone, but we should find out why they were copied.""
"What should I do?""
"Nothing impulsive. I'll investigate through the proper channels.""
I looked at Lily's stuffed rabbit lying beside her pillow.
For years, I had believed Vanessa's cruelty was a private problem—a failure of love inside our home.
Now there were forged-looking documents, missing money, a possible legal strategy, and an unknown third party.
I thought of the message threatening that I would never get Lily back.
Then Rachel sent one final text.
It contained a screenshot of the attachment Vanessa had emailed her.
The document's heading was partially visible.
*PROPOSED CHANGE OF RESIDENCE AND CUSTODIAL ARRANGEMENTS.*
Beneath it was Lily's full name.
And beside the name of the proposed caregiver was a name I had never expected to see.
Not Vanessa.
Not Rachel.
Someone else entirely.
May you like
Someone who, according to the document, had already agreed to take my daughter.
And the date listed for the proposed transfer was only three days away.
