Chapter 13: The Witness They Buried

“Who is Daniel?””

My father stood frozen in the hallway while Detective Mills knocked again.

Vanessa had one hand pressed against her mouth. Her eyes darted between me and David, and for the first time since I had known her, she looked like someone who had run out of lies.

“Dad,” I said, raising my phone, “who is Daniel?””

He shook his head.

“Not now, Nia.””

“You said Martin arranged for someone to tamper with Mom’s car. You knew about it. And now Vanessa is terrified because I heard a name.””

“Please,” he whispered.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it!””

The front door shook beneath another knock.

“David Carter, open the door!””

My father finally unlocked it.

Detective Mills entered with two uniformed officers. She looked at my phone, then at my father.

“Did you record that conversation?””

“Yes,” I replied.

“Have you altered the recording?””

“No.””

“Please send a copy to me. Keep the original file.””

She turned toward my father.

“We've received additional evidence regarding the vehicle tampering and the financial arrangements involving Martin Hale. We need you to accompany us for further questioning.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You can't take him anywhere. He hasn't done anything.””

Detective Mills regarded her calmly.

“Mrs. Williams, we haven't accused anyone of a crime in this room. We're gathering evidence. If you have information relevant to the investigation, now would be an appropriate time to share it.””

Vanessa looked at David.

He gave her a pleading look.

For a moment, I thought she would remain silent.

Then she sat down on the bottom stair and began to cry.

“Daniel was Martin's assistant,” she said.

“He handled the contracts and the payments.””

Detective Mills took out her notebook.

“His full name?””

“Daniel Mercer.””

My father closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“He was at Martin's office the night your mother disappeared. He called me afterward and said there had been an accident.””

“Did you see him that night?”” I asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“He came to our house before dawn. He had blood on his sleeve.””

My stomach lurched.

“Blood?””

“He said he'd cut himself while helping someone at the roadside. I didn't question him.””

“You didn't question a man who arrived at your house before dawn with blood on his clothes after Mom's car crashed?””

Vanessa began sobbing harder.

“I was afraid!””

I stared at her.

“You were always afraid when telling the truth might cost you something.””

She looked up at me, unable to answer.

Detective Mills asked for Daniel's last known address. Vanessa provided the name of a town outside Atlanta and an old business address.

The detective immediately contacted her colleagues.

Then she turned to my father.

“Mr. Carter, did you know Daniel Mercer was involved in the events surrounding your wife's death?””

My father gripped the banister.

“I knew he worked for Martin. I didn't know he was at the crash.””

“But you knew someone had tampered with the car.””

“Yes.””

“Who told you?””

“Martin.””

“When?””

My father looked at me.

“The evening before the accident.””

I felt my throat close.

“What did he say?””

Dad's voice was barely audible.

“He said your mother needed to be stopped before she destroyed everything. He told me the car would be disabled so she couldn't leave town with the documents.””

“And you agreed?””

“I didn't think she would drive it.””

“That isn't an answer.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

I backed away from him.

For five years, I had imagined my father's worst betrayal was his decision to let Vanessa and Brianna mistreat me.

I had been wrong.

He had known that someone planned to interfere with my mother's car. He had done nothing to stop it. Then he had accepted money and concealed the truth.

I didn't know whether he had intended her death.

I only knew that he had allowed the danger to exist.

Detective Mills led him toward the door.

Before he left, he turned to me.

“Nia, I'm sorry.””

I couldn't speak.

He waited, perhaps hoping I would say something that made his apology easier to bear.

I didn't.

The officers took him away for questioning, while Detective Mills remained behind to collect my recording and arrange for Vanessa to give a formal statement.

When the house finally fell quiet, I went upstairs and packed my sewing kit, presentation notes, and the photograph of my mother beside the red gown.

I couldn't stay there another night.

Jasmine arrived twenty minutes later and took me to her family's home.

Her mother made tea without asking questions. Her father brought an extra blanket. Nobody demanded that I explain why I was shaking.

For the first time in days, I slept.

At seven the next morning, Eleanor Whitmore called.

“They've found Daniel,” she said.

I sat upright.

“Is he alive?””

“Yes. He's living in North Carolina under his middle name. Detective Mills has contacted him, and he's agreed to speak with investigators.””

“Why would he agree now?””

“Apparently, he learned Martin planned to blame everything on him if the investigation reopened.””

I closed my eyes.

“What does Daniel know?””

Eleanor paused.

“He says he witnessed Martin ordering the car tampering. He also claims he saw your mother alive after the collision.””

My heart stopped.

“After the collision?””

“Yes. He says she survived the initial crash.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then how did she die?””

“I don't know, Nia. Daniel hasn't given the investigators a complete statement yet.””

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

My mother might have survived the crash.

Someone might have had the opportunity to save her.

And someone might have chosen not to.

Eleanor continued gently.

“There's something else. Daniel says your mother left the car carrying a small red case. He believes she was trying to protect the original ownership documents.””

“The certificate?””

“Possibly. But he says the case disappeared before the authorities arrived.””

I looked at the photograph on my bedside table.

My mother was smiling beside the gown she had created, unaware that the people around her would spend years trying to erase her name.

“Did Daniel say who took it?””

“Yes.””

I held my breath.

“He says Martin took the case. But the person who drove your mother away from the roadside was someone else.””

“Who?””

Eleanor's answer came quietly.

“Your stepmother, Vanessa.””

I stared at the wall.

Vanessa had told me she was afraid. She had admitted bringing my mother to Martin's office. But she had never mentioned finding her at the roadside.

I called Detective Mills.

She confirmed that Daniel's preliminary statement matched several details from the investigation. However, she emphasized that they still needed corroborating evidence before drawing conclusions about Vanessa's role.

Then she said something that changed the course of my day.

“Mr. Mercer also reported that Martin Hale intends to present a second collection at today's competition. The collection contains several designs your mother created before her death.””

I looked at the clock.

The final presentation began in two hours.

Martin was planning to display my mother's stolen work before an audience of judges, sponsors, and reporters.

I stood and reached for my garment bag.

“Then I'd better make sure everyone knows who created it.””

But as I prepared to leave, another message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of my mother sitting in the passenger seat of a car, alive and conscious, with Vanessa behind the wheel.

The timestamp was from the morning of the accident.
