Chapter 7: The Secret Written in My Father's Will
I read the message three times.
*Ashley is not the daughter you think she is.*
For six years, I had believed Ashley was simply the child of the woman I loved. I had never questioned her parentage. Rebecca had told me her biological father abandoned them when Ashley was two, and I had accepted that explanation without hesitation.
Now, with my dead brother walking around Chicago and my father's hidden documents scattered across my kitchen table, even that simple story felt like a lie.
"Emily," I asked, "who sent this?""
She shook her head.
"Unknown number. I tried calling it, but it went straight to voicemail.""
I looked at Rebecca.
"Tell me what this means.""
She backed away from me.
"Michael, you're exhausted. Daniel is trying to destroy our family. You can't believe everything he says.""
"I haven't asked you what Daniel says. I've asked you about Ashley.""
Rebecca's mouth trembled.
From the staircase, Ashley spoke.
"Mom, please tell him.""
Rebecca spun around.
"Go upstairs!""
"No!"" Ashley shouted.
"I'm tired of being told to shut up every time someone asks a question!""
The words echoed through the house.
Emily moved beside her stepsister. For the first time that day, neither girl looked like the spoiled teenager who had argued over a birthday car. They looked like two young women who had just discovered that the adults responsible for protecting them might have built their lives on lies.
I walked toward the bedroom.
Rebecca followed me, pleading.
"Michael, please. Let me explain before you open that safe.""
I stopped outside the door.
"You've had six years to explain.""
"I was afraid you'd leave.""
I turned.
"So you lied instead?""
She covered her face.
I entered the bedroom and opened the closet. Behind a row of Rebecca's dresses sat the small electronic safe I had installed after a burglary at my office.
I knew the combination.
Rebecca had chosen the safe herself.
I entered the numbers.
The lock clicked.
Inside were passports, jewelry, several envelopes, and a thick folder secured with a rubber band.
I pulled out the folder.
The first document was a certified copy of my father's amended will, dated one day before his death.
My hands went cold as I read the beneficiary's name.
*Ashley Rebecca Morgan.*
The document stated that my father intended to establish a trust for Ashley, with the funds to be released when she turned eighteen.
But there was something wrong.
Ashley had been born years after the date of the will's original draft. The amendment appeared to have been executed shortly before my father's death, and the signature looked remarkably similar to his.
I read the document again.
Then I noticed a second page.
It was a letter addressed to Rebecca.
If you keep your promise, Ashley will never have to suffer for what Daniel has done.
I stared at the sentence.
"What promise?"" I asked.
Rebecca stood in the doorway, crying.
"My father wrote this to you?""
She nodded.
"Why would he leave money to Ashley?""
Rebecca's eyes shifted toward the document.
"Because he believed she deserved a chance at a better life.""
"She wasn't even part of our family.""
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"Not legally.""
The room seemed to stop moving.
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
She sank onto the edge of the bed.
"Before I met you, I was involved with someone. Someone who was connected to your family.""
"Who?""
She said nothing.
I placed the will on the dresser.
"Rebecca, I swear to God, if you don't tell me the truth now—"
"Your brother.""
The words came out like a confession.
I felt my legs weaken.
"No.""
"Michael—"
"No. Ashley is eighteen. Daniel supposedly disappeared eight years ago. The dates don't even—"
"He didn't disappear when you think he did.""
I stared at her.
Rebecca wiped her face with both hands.
"Daniel was living under another name before the boating accident. He had been hiding from creditors for years. I met him through your father's office, and we had a relationship before he vanished.""
I could barely breathe.
"And Ashley?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Daniel is her biological father.""
The room became painfully silent.
I thought of Ashley throwing the Toyota keys onto the driveway. I thought of every birthday, every school fee, every time she had called me Michael instead of Dad when she was angry.
Then I thought of Daniel standing on my porch, demanding money from me.
He had allowed me to raise his daughter while pretending to be dead.
"Does Ashley know?"" I asked.
"She found out last year.""
My stomach twisted.
"Last year?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Daniel contacted her privately. He told her he was her father and that you had stolen the inheritance that belonged to her.""
I sat down heavily.
"That's why she thought she deserved the Mercedes.""
"Yes.""
"She believed I owed her money?""
"Daniel told her the trust was worth millions. He said you were keeping it from her.""
I stared at the amended will.
"Was this document genuine?""
Rebecca hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than any answer could have.
"Rebecca.""
"I don't know.""
"You don't know whether your own daughter's inheritance document is real?""
"I received it from Daniel. He said your father had arranged everything through Arthur Mills.""
I picked up the document and examined the signature again.
Something about the ink bothered me. The signature was too dark, too uniform, as if it had been copied onto the page.
My father had always signed his name with a distinctive upward stroke through the final letter.
This signature lacked it.
I looked at Rebecca.
"Where is the original?""
She shook her head.
"Daniel took it.""
I folded the papers and placed them back in the folder.
For six years, I had believed my marriage was built on love, trust, and the simple desire to give two girls a stable home.
Now I discovered that one girl might be my brother's daughter, the other had been targeted for her inheritance, and my wife had helped conceal the truth.
I walked downstairs.
Emily and Ashley were waiting in the living room.
Ashley stood when she saw me.
"Michael, I can explain.""
I looked at her.
"Did you know Daniel was your father?""
Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes.""
"Did he tell you I was stealing your inheritance?""
She nodded.
"And did you believe him?""
She looked down.
"At first.""
"Is that why you threw the keys at me?""
Ashley began crying.
"I thought you were trying to humiliate me. Daniel said you bought Emily the Mercedes because you wanted everyone to know she was the only daughter who mattered.""
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I felt only exhaustion.
Then Emily took my hand.
"Dad, look at the last page.""
I turned back to the will.
Beneath the supposed signature was a handwritten note.
It was short.
And it was unmistakably in my father's handwriting.
*If Ashley is ever told who her father is, the trust must remain sealed until Michael learns the truth about the night I died.*
I looked at Rebecca.
She went completely still.
May you like
Because whatever my father had known about Ashley, he had left one final secret hidden inside the inheritance.
And that secret was connected to his death.
