Chapter 5: My Brother's Name on the Documents

I read the name three times.

Daniel Bennett.

My younger brother had spent the afternoon helping carry chairs, pouring lemonade for the children, and defending me when Ashley mocked my birthday cake.

Now his name appeared on a document connected to an attempt to use my house as security for Robert's debt.

I called Thomas immediately.

“Tell me this is a mistake.””

“I can't confirm that yet,” he replied.

“The company is listed as the proposed intermediary in the transaction. We need to establish Daniel's actual role.””

“He's my brother.””

“I understand.””

“He would never help someone take my home.””

Thomas paused.

“Margaret, I need you to separate what you believe about Daniel from what the records show. We will investigate before drawing conclusions.””

I hated that he was right.

When I ended the call, Robert was still standing in the hallway.

“Did you know Daniel was involved?”” I asked.

He looked startled.

“What?””

“His name is on the paperwork.””

Robert's expression shifted.

It wasn't surprise.

It was recognition.

“You knew,” I whispered.

“No, I—”

“You recognized his name before I finished speaking.””

He sank onto the edge of the guest-room bed.

“Daniel introduced me to the investor who offered to help.””

I felt as though someone had struck me in the chest.

“When?””

“Last year.””

“And you never told me?””

“It wasn't supposed to involve you.””

I stared at him.

“My house was being used as collateral. How could it possibly not involve me?””

Robert rubbed his face.

“Daniel said he knew a way to protect the investment. He introduced me to a man named Victor Hale, who claimed he could negotiate with the lender.””

“Victor Hale?””

“Yes. He said the debt could be restructured if we provided additional security.””

“Whose security?””

Robert looked away.

I stepped closer.

“Whose security, Robert?””

“Yours.””

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

My own brother had introduced my husband to a man who wanted to use my house to cover a debt I knew nothing about.

I gripped the doorframe.

“Did Daniel know you intended to transfer the property to Ashley?””

“I don't know what Daniel knew.””

“Did he know about the affidavit?””

Robert hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I don't have all the answers!””

His voice echoed down the hallway.

I stared at him, remembering the man who had promised to stand beside me for the rest of my life.

“Then perhaps you should start giving me the answers you do have.””

He lowered his head.

“I thought I could solve everything before you found out.””

“And what would have happened if you succeeded?””

He said nothing.

Would he have told me that my house had somehow become Ashley's? Would he have watched me pack my belongings and leave the home I had bought with my mother's inheritance?

I didn't know which possibility hurt more.

At seven the next morning, I drove to Daniel's house.

I hadn't slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the cake collapsing onto the patio and heard Ashley laughing.

Daniel lived twenty minutes away in a modest brick house with a basketball hoop over the garage. His wife, Patricia, answered the door wearing a cardigan and holding a mug of coffee.

She took one look at my face.

“Margaret? What's wrong?””

“Is Daniel home?””

“He's in the kitchen. Come in.””

Daniel stood at the counter making toast.

“Hey, sis,” he said.

“You look exhausted. Did you sleep at all?””

I placed the printed document on the counter.

“Explain this.””

He glanced down.

His face changed.

Only for a moment.

Then he pushed the paper away.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my attorney.””

“Margaret, this doesn't mean what you think it means.””

“Then tell me what it means.””

Daniel glanced at Patricia.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No,” I said.

“I've had enough private conversations.””

Patricia put down her mug.

“Daniel, what is going on?””

He exhaled sharply.

“Robert had financial trouble. I introduced him to someone who might have helped.””

“You introduced him to Victor Hale?””

His eyes widened.

“You know Victor?””

“Only because my attorney is investigating a transaction involving my house.””

Daniel dragged a hand through his hair.

“I never agreed to anything being transferred into Ashley's name.””

“But you agreed to help Robert use my property as security?””

“I thought you knew about the investment.””

“You thought I knew my husband had lost three hundred thousand dollars?””

Daniel's silence was devastating.

Patricia stared at him.

“You told me Robert was asking for business advice.””

“He was!””

“And you never mentioned Margaret's house?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

I felt tears sting my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.

“Why didn't you call me?””

“I thought I could help Robert get his money back before it became a family disaster.””

“So you helped him hide it.””

“I didn't forge your signature!””

“No. You just helped the people who did.””

Daniel flinched.

Patricia moved beside me.

“Margaret, I'm so sorry.””

Daniel reached for the document.

I pulled it away.

“Don't touch it.””

He raised his hands.

“Listen. Victor told me the paperwork was preliminary. He said the property wouldn't change hands without your consent.””

“Then why is my husband's affidavit claiming I am incompetent?””

Daniel looked genuinely horrified.

“What affidavit?””

I studied his face.

This time, his shock seemed real.

I showed him the fourth page.

He read it silently.

Then he sat down hard.

“Oh, my God.””

Patricia leaned over his shoulder.

“Daniel, what does this mean?””

He looked up at me.

“I swear I didn't know about this.””

“Can you prove that?””

“Yes.””

He pulled his phone from his pocket and opened a message thread.

“Victor sent me these messages last month. He said he was trying to negotiate a private loan. I told him I wouldn't participate in anything that involved Margaret's property without her permission.””

He turned the screen toward me.

The messages appeared genuine, but I knew better than to rely on a few screenshots.

“Send everything to Thomas,” I said.

“Every message. Every email. Everything.””

Daniel nodded.

Then he hesitated.

“There's something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What?””

“Victor asked me to attend a meeting next week. He said the transfer would be finalized then.””

“Where?””

“His office in Buckhead.””

“And who else will be there?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He said Ashley, Robert, and the lender's representative.””

My hands went cold.

“Why would they schedule a meeting if the transfer was supposedly preliminary?””

Daniel looked at me helplessly.

“I don't know.””

My phone rang.

Thomas.

I answered immediately.

“Margaret, I have an update. I've spoken with the county records office and requested copies of the relevant filings. There is no basis for treating the disputed transfer as authorized simply because someone submitted documents. We are preparing the necessary legal steps to challenge it.””

“Thank God.””

“But there's a complication. The lender has also submitted a notice asserting that the property was offered as security.””

I gripped the counter.

“Can they take the house?””

“Not automatically. We need to contest the claim and establish exactly what was signed, by whom, and under what authority.””

Then Thomas added, “Margaret, I also found a payment connected to the transaction.””

“To whom?””

He gave me a name.

I looked at Daniel.

He was already staring at me, sensing that something had changed.

“Thomas,” I whispered, “who received the money?””

“The initial payment went to a consulting company associated with Victor Hale. But a second payment was routed through an account connected to someone in your family.””

My mouth went dry.

“Who?””

Thomas paused.

“Your stepdaughter, Ashley.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel stood up.

“What did he say?””

I looked at my brother, then at the messages still open on his screen.

Ashley hadn't merely been promised my house.

Someone had already paid her money connected to the attempted transfer.

And if she had accepted that money before the paperwork was filed, she had known much more than she had admitted at my birthday party.

I called Thomas back.

“Find out how much she received.””

“I will.””

“And Thomas?””

“Yes?””

“Find out whether that money was paid before or after Robert signed the affidavit.””

His voice became grave.

“Margaret, why?””

“Because if she was paid before he signed it, then this wasn't just a desperate attempt to save a failed investment.””

I stared at the family photograph on Daniel's refrigerator.

It showed all of us together at Christmas, smiling beneath the tree.

“Someone planned this,” I whispered.

“And I want to know who planned it first.””
