Chapter 9: The Truth My Sister Couldn't Bear to Tell

Madison refused to leave the house.

She sat on an old storage chest in the basement, clutching her handbag while Mr. Hayes examined the documents we'd found. Every time I looked at her, she seemed to shrink further into herself.

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me did.

But the birth record lay between us like a live wire, and I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility that the man who had treated our mother had been part of our family long before any of us understood it.

"Why did you sell Daniel your shares?"" I asked.

Madison stared at the floor.

"He said he was building an investment company. He told me he could turn a small amount of money into something substantial.""

"How much did he pay you?""

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

I blinked.

"You sold your interest for two hundred thousand dollars?""

"I didn't know it was worth more.""

"Didn't you read the agreement?""

"He said the lawyers had already reviewed it.""

"Which lawyers?""

She swallowed.

"His.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

"Madison, did you know he was trying to acquire control of the company?""

"Not at first.""

"When did you find out?""

She took a shaky breath.

"About three weeks ago.""

Three weeks.

The same time I'd been finalizing the wedding seating chart and confirming the florist.

"What did you do when you found out?""

"Nothing.""

I stared at her.

"Nothing?""

"I was afraid he'd cancel the deal and demand the money back. I'd already spent some of it.""

"On what?""

She looked away.

"Credit cards. Rent. A car.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

She had sold part of our grandfather's legacy to a man who was planning to marry me, and she hadn't even understood what she was signing.

"Did Daniel tell you about the trust?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Six months ago. He said he had found a way to protect the family assets.""

"By stealing my inheritance?""

"He said the money would be safer under his management.""

I let out a bitter laugh.

"Did he tell you he was sleeping with me while he made these plans?""

Madison's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

"Did he tell you he loved you?""

She nodded.

"And you believed him?""

She didn't answer.

Mr. Hayes closed the folder.

"Madison, I need to ask you something. Did your mother ever tell you that Thomas Bennett was your biological father?""

She looked at him sharply.

"No.""

"Did anyone else?""

She hesitated.

"Daniel said he suspected it. He found the old letters and told me that if Dr. Bennett was my father, I might have a claim to the family company.""

Mr. Hayes's expression tightened.

"That is not something he could determine from private correspondence alone.""

"But he said there was a document.""

"What document?""

Madison looked at me.

"The original beneficiary agreement.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"What is it?""

She took a small envelope from her bag.

"I found this in Daniel's office last week. I copied it because I thought he might use it against me.""

She handed it to Mr. Hayes.

Inside was a photocopy of a document titled Conditional Family Settlement Agreement.

The agreement had been signed by my mother, Thomas Bennett, and Robert Hayes nearly six years earlier.

It stated that Madison would receive a separate financial settlement if Thomas formally acknowledged paternity and agreed to relinquish certain claims against the family holding company.

In exchange, Madison would waive any claim to the controlling interest in the company.

But a handwritten addition had been made beneath the signatures.

This agreement shall remain confidential unless a beneficiary's rights are threatened by fraud, coercion, or misrepresentation.

Mr. Hayes read it carefully.

"I remember this document," he said.

"But this copy is incomplete.""

"What's missing?"" I asked.

"The final page. It contains the conditions under which the settlement could be enforced.""

Madison rubbed her hands together.

"Daniel said the agreement would prove I was entitled to half the company.""

"That isn't what this page says," Mr. Hayes replied.

"He said Mom changed it after she got sick.""

"Did he show you evidence?""

"No.""

"Then you should not have relied on his interpretation.""

Madison looked at me.

"I know.""

I studied her face.

For the first time, I saw how thoroughly Daniel had manipulated both of us. He had offered me marriage while secretly investigating my inheritance. He had offered Madison love while using her financial desperation to gain access to the family company.

But understanding his manipulation didn't erase her choices.

"You helped him steal my wedding fund," I said.

She nodded.

"You signed a document giving him access to our mother's property.""

Another nod.

"And you let him put my engagement ring on your finger.""

She began crying.

"I know.""

I turned away.

"I don't know how to forgive you.""

"I'm not asking you to.""

The honesty in her answer surprised me.

She wiped her face.

"I just want you to know that I didn't start this because I wanted you to lose everything. I started because I was tired of feeling like the poor sister who needed saving.""

I looked at her.

"Then why didn't you build something for yourself?""

"Because Daniel made it sound easy. He said I could have the money, the company, the life I wanted, and nobody would get hurt.""

"And you believed him.""

"Yes.""

She lowered her head.

"I believed him because he told me what I wanted to hear.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Mr. Hayes received a call from Elaine.

He listened, asked several questions, and turned toward me.

"The forensic specialist has found evidence that the medical letter submitted to the venue was created using a document template from a computer associated with Daniel's company.""

My stomach tightened.

"Can they prove he created it?""

"They can establish that the file originated from that computer, but the full chain of evidence is still being reviewed. The authorities will need to determine who prepared and submitted it.""

Madison stood abruptly.

"Then we have to stop him.""

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

"Daniel is going to the trust administrator tonight. He told me he has an appointment to finalize the transfer.""

Mr. Hayes frowned.

"How do you know that?""

"Because he asked me to come with him.""

"When?""

"Seven o'clock.""

I checked my watch.

It was almost five.

Mr. Hayes immediately called Elaine.

Within minutes, they had arranged for the trust administrator to be informed that the transfer was disputed and that no changes should be made without independent verification. We also provided the information about the suspicious documents and the missing original letter.

But Daniel still had one advantage.

He possessed a minority interest in the family company, and the transfer agreement Madison had signed might give him enough leverage to create additional complications.

"We need the complete beneficiary agreement," Mr. Hayes said.

"Without it, we cannot determine the exact rights Madison may have waived.""

I looked at the birth record.

"Can Dr. Bennett provide it?""

"He may have information relevant to the agreement, but given his involvement in the disputed records, we should not rely on him as the sole source.""

Madison took a deep breath.

"There's somewhere else we can look.""

"Where?"" I asked.

"Daniel's office.""

Mr. Hayes shook his head.

"We cannot enter his private office without permission or proper legal authority.""

"I have a key," Madison said.

"That doesn't mean you're authorized to search it.""

She looked frustrated.

"Then what are we supposed to do?""

"Preserve the evidence you already have and let the proper authorities handle the rest.""

Madison sat back down.

I knew Mr. Hayes was right. I also knew Daniel wouldn't simply surrender. He'd spent six months building a plan, and every document we uncovered seemed to reveal another layer.

At 5:38 p.m., my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Sarah Mitchell?""

"Yes.""

"This is Dr. Bennett.""

I stood.

"Why are you calling me?""

"I need to speak with you before Daniel reaches the trust administrator.""

Mr. Hayes motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"Then tell me what you know," I said.

Dr. Bennett sounded exhausted.

"Your mother left a second set of instructions. They were never included in the public estate file.""

"Where are they?""

"With me.""

"Why?""

"Because she asked me to keep them safe.""

"Then why did you let Daniel access her medical records?""

Silence.

Finally, he said, "Because he told me he had proof that your mother wanted Madison to inherit the company.""

"Did you believe him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

"Why?""

His voice cracked.

"Because Madison is my daughter.""

The room went silent.

Madison covered her mouth.

I stared at the phone.

"You knew?""

"I suspected it for years. Your mother never confirmed it until shortly before she died.""

"Then why didn't you tell her?""

"I did. She asked me to respect her decision not to disclose it to Madison until she was ready.""

Madison began shaking her head.

"You're my father?""

Dr. Bennett took a shaky breath.

"Yes.""

She sank onto the storage chest.

I felt anger rising in my throat.

"You let Daniel use your credentials. You let him access my mother's records. You helped him build a case against me.""

"I made a terrible mistake," he said.

"I thought I was protecting Madison's rights. I didn't know he intended to falsify your signature or transfer the wedding funds.""

"Why should I believe you?""

"Because I have the original beneficiary agreement. And because your mother left a statement explaining exactly why she created it.""

I closed my eyes.

"Where are you?""

"At the hospital.""

"Don't leave.""

"I won't.""

Before he hung up, he said one more thing.

"Sarah, there's something about Daniel you need to understand. He didn't discover your mother's estate by accident. He was introduced to the company by someone who wanted your family to lose control of it.""

My pulse quickened.

"Who?""

Dr. Bennett paused.

"Your grandfather's former business partner.""

Mr. Hayes went completely still.

Then Dr. Bennett spoke a name.

"Richard Cole.""

Mr. Hayes gripped his cane.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"Who is Richard Cole?""

He stared at the floor for several seconds.

Then he lifted his eyes to mine.

"The man who disappeared after your grandfather died.""

May you like

He swallowed.

"And the man your mother believed had arranged the accident that killed him.""
