Chapter 14: The Truth That Changed Everything
The photo was old.
The quality was terrible.
But I remembered that day.
I remembered the rain.
The sound of metal.
The smell of gasoline.
The hospital lights.
For years, I called it an accident.
Everyone did.
A distracted driver.
A slippery road.
Bad timing.
That was easier to believe.
Because the alternative was terrifying.
Ethan took the phone from my hand.
“Who sent this?””
“I don’t know.””
Detective Harris looked at the number.
“We’ll trace it.””
I barely heard him.
My mind was somewhere else.
Back in that hospital room.
Back when Rebecca had sat beside my bed.
Back when she held my hand and said:
“You’re lucky to be alive.””
I thought she was comforting me.
Now I wondered if she was checking whether I remembered anything.
“I need to know,” I whispered.
Ethan looked at me.
“What?””
“The truth.””
Detective Harris arranged for the old accident report to be reviewed.
The next morning, we sat in a conference room while an investigator explained what they found.
“The original report had inconsistencies.””
I stared at the documents.
“What kind?””
“The vehicle damage didn’t match the explanation given.””
Ethan looked tense.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the crash may not have happened because of weather.””
I swallowed.
“Then what caused it?””
The investigator placed a photo on the table.
A close-up of my car.
“The brake line.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
Ethan grabbed my hand.
“Hey.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
Because suddenly I remembered something.
A few days before the accident.
Rebecca had borrowed my car.
She said hers was being repaired.
She said it would only be for an hour.
I had never questioned it.
Why would I?
She was family.
Detective Harris watched my expression.
“You remembered something.””
I nodded slowly.
“My aunt borrowed my car.””
“When?””
“Three days before the crash.””
The room went quiet.
The investigator wrote it down.
“Did anyone else know?””
“My mother.””
“And?””
I closed my eyes.
“Rebecca.””
The pieces finally connected.
Rebecca didn’t just want my wedding stopped.
She had been watching me for years.
Waiting.
Controlling.
Removing anything that threatened her.
That evening, Chloe asked to speak with me alone.
We sat outside my parents’ house.
The same place where we used to sit as teenagers and complain about our lives.
Everything felt different now.
“I owe you an apology.””
I looked at her.
“A real one.””
She nodded.
“I spent so much time being angry at you that I forgot you were the only person who always showed up for me.””
I didn’t answer.
Because forgiveness was not something I could give in one conversation.
“I hated that people compared us.””
She wiped her eyes.
“But I never realized I was helping someone who actually wanted to destroy you.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Rebecca?””
She swallowed.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“That I believed her.””
She looked down.
“She knew exactly what to say.””
I understood.
Because Rebecca had done the same thing to everyone.
She found weaknesses.
Then she pressed on them.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
I looked away.
“I don’t know if I can yet.””
She nodded.
“But I want to fix what I can.””
The next morning, Detective Harris called.
They found Rebecca.
She wasn’t running.
She was waiting.
That frightened me more.
When I arrived at the station, Rebecca sat across from me.
The woman who once adjusted my wedding veil.
The woman who hugged me before I walked down the aisle.
She looked calm.
“You finally found out.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She smiled sadly.
“That’s the question everyone asks.””
“Because you’re evil?””
Her expression changed.
“No.””
“Then why?””
She looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
“Because your mother was going to expose me.””
“My mother?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She found out what I did.””
“And you killed her?””
Her face remained calm.
“I made one mistake.””
I felt anger rise.
“One mistake?””
She looked at me.
“I tried to fix it.””
The words made me sick.
“And then you came after me.””
“No.””
She leaned forward.
“I came after the truth.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You ruined my wedding.””
“I saved you from a marriage built on secrets.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You don’t know everything.””
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a file.
Then she placed it on the table.
“I was not the only person hiding something.””
My heart tightened.
“What is that?””
Rebecca looked directly at me.
“The reason your accident happened.””
She pushed the file forward.
“It wasn’t because of me.””
I froze.
“Then who?””
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
May you like
And the answer she gave destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Your fiancé.””
