Chapter 5: The Secret Meeting Before Our First Date
“Your uncle introduced Elena to your mother?””
Sarah nodded.
I stared at the photograph on the kitchen table.
Uncle Richard had always been the quiet one in our family. He lived in Naperville, owned a small accounting firm, and avoided family arguments whenever possible. At Thanksgiving, he sat at the end of the table and told the same jokes every year.
I had never imagined him helping my mother arrange my life.
“How do you know about this meeting?”” I asked.
Sarah sat across from me.
“Because Richard contacted me after he learned Martha was trying to make the custody arrangement permanent.””
“Why didn't he contact me?””
“He said he tried. Your mother told him you were too upset to hear anything about Sarah or Leo.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“That sounds like her.””
“No, Daniel.”” Sarah leaned forward.
“It sounds like the story she wanted everyone to believe.””
She opened a drawer and removed a small black notebook.
“Richard kept records. Dates, payments, meetings. He told me he was afraid your mother would destroy everything if he confronted her without proof.””
“Payments?””
Sarah slid a printed bank statement across the table.
A transfer of $15,000 had been made from an account belonging to Martha Bennett to a consulting company called Westbridge Advisory.
The date was two weeks before Elena and I met.
I recognized the name.
Westbridge was the company that had organized the charity gala where Elena supposedly approached me by chance.
My stomach twisted.
“Who owns this company?””
“Your uncle traced it to a man named Victor Hale,” Sarah said.
“He was the person who introduced Elena to Richard.””
I stared at the statement.
“Why would my mother pay someone to introduce Elena to my uncle?””
“That's what Richard wanted to know.””
Sarah opened the notebook.
Several pages contained short handwritten entries.
February 3 — Martha asked about Daniel's divorce.
February 12 — Victor introduced Elena.
February 18 — Martha requested information about Daniel's finances.
March 7 — Elena asked whether Daniel intended to have more children.
I read the last line twice.
“More children?””
Sarah nodded.
“Richard said Elena kept asking questions about your assets, your life insurance, and whether Leo would inherit anything from you.””
My skin prickled.
“Elena told me she didn't care about money.””
“She told me the same thing.””
Sarah's voice grew bitter.
“She said she understood that you would always love your son. She said she wanted to build a family with you, not replace Leo.””
I looked at her.
“You met Elena?””
“Once. At a restaurant, before your engagement.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried.””
She stood abruptly and walked to the cabinet.
“Do you remember the weekend you were supposed to take Leo to the aquarium?””
I remembered.
My mother had told me Sarah canceled because Leo had a fever.
“I went to your apartment that morning,” Sarah continued.
“Elena answered the door.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“You were living with me then.””
“I know.””
Sarah turned toward me.
“Elena told me you were asleep. She said you had asked her to handle all communication about Leo because you were tired of fighting with me.””
“That never happened.””
“I know that now.””
She took a shaky breath.
“She told me if I kept contacting you, she'd make sure I lost custody. She said your mother had already spoken to a lawyer and had enough evidence to prove I was an unstable parent.””
I stood.
“Why didn't you call the police?””
“Because she showed me a document with your signature on it.””
My heart began pounding.
“The document saying I gave up my rights?””
Sarah nodded.
“She said you had signed it willingly. She said you wanted to move on, and she was trying to protect you from my harassment.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed her?””
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know what to believe. Your mother had already convinced me that you hated me. Then Elena appeared, wearing your ring, telling me she was protecting your wishes.””
She pressed her hands against the table.
“I was terrified that if I pushed too hard, they'd use it against me in court. So I kept sending letters. I kept saving evidence. I kept telling Leo that you loved him, even when I had no idea whether you still did.””
The room seemed to shrink around me.
I had spent two years thinking Sarah was trying to punish me.
She had spent those same two years trying to reach me without knowing whether I wanted to be reached.
“I'm sorry,” I whispered.
Sarah looked away.
“I don't need another apology, Daniel. I need you to protect Leo.””
“I will.””
“You said that once before.””
The words struck like a slap.
I had no defense.
Leo appeared in the doorway holding a stuffed dinosaur.
“Mommy?””
Sarah wiped her face quickly.
“Hey, baby. What's wrong?””
“Can I have some juice?””
“Of course.””
He glanced at me.
“Daddy, do you want some?””
I smiled, though my eyes burned.
“Sure, buddy.””
He disappeared into the kitchen.
Sarah watched him go.
“He still loves you,” she said.
“That's what makes this so difficult.””
I looked down at the notebook.
“I'm going to confront Elena.””
“Not yet.””
“Sarah—”
“Listen to me.”” Her voice sharpened.
“If your mother and Elena really planned this together, they'll deny everything. They'll destroy messages, delete emails, and blame each other. You need evidence that can't disappear.””
She pulled another page from the folder.
It contained a phone number and a handwritten name.
“Victor Hale,” I read.
“Richard found out that Victor was paid to arrange introductions between wealthy men and women who wanted access to their families. He believed Elena was part of something bigger.””
“Bigger than what?””
“Your mother told him she wanted to secure Leo's future.””
“That sounds reasonable.””
“Until he asked why she needed a new wife to do it.””
I stared at her.
“What did she say?””
Sarah swallowed.
“She said a child needed a stable family. She said you would never fully commit to another marriage while Leo remained your responsibility.””
The words echoed in my head.
While Leo remained your responsibility.
As though my son were a burden I needed to eliminate before I could be happy.
I walked to the window.
Outside, Leo was showing Andrew a toy car through the glass. Andrew laughed, and Leo laughed with him.
My son deserved better than all of us.
I turned back to Sarah.
“Where is Richard now?””
“He agreed to meet me tomorrow. He says he has something Martha doesn't know exists.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
My phone vibrated.
Elena's name appeared on the screen.
I answered without greeting her.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“At Sarah's.””
A long silence followed.
Then her voice changed.
“You need to leave that house immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because you have no idea what she's capable of.””
I almost laughed.
“You mean the woman you spent two years trying to silence?””
“She's manipulating you!””
“Then why did you visit Leo's school before we even met?””
Silence.
“Elena?””
She took a shaky breath.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
“Not over the phone.””
“Fine. I'll meet you.””
“Tonight?””
“Yes.””
She hesitated.
“Come to the house. Your mother is here.””
I glanced at Sarah.
She shook her head firmly.
“I'm not coming to the house,” I said.
“Meet me somewhere public.””
“Daniel, please. Don't make this worse.””
“Worse than what? My son believing I abandoned him?””
Her voice dropped.
“You don't understand what your mother was trying to do.””
“Then tell me.””
Another silence.
Finally, Elena whispered, “Your mother didn't start this because she hated Sarah.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why did she start it?””
Elena's next words changed everything.
“Because two years ago, Sarah discovered something about your father. Something your mother would do anything to keep hidden.””
The call disconnected.
I stood motionless in Sarah's kitchen.
My father had been dead for twelve years.
What could Sarah possibly have discovered about him that would make my mother destroy my marriage, manipulate my son, and forge my signature?
Sarah looked at me.
“Daniel, what did Elena say?””
I slowly lowered the phone.
“She said this was never really about Sarah.””
May you like
Then I looked at the notebook again.
And for the first time, I wondered whether my mother's greatest secret had been buried long before Leo was born.
