Chapter 8: The Name on the File

We drove back to the house with Ethan's warning hanging over us.

Nobody spoke.

Lily sat beside Sarah in the back seat, her small hand wrapped around her mother's fingers.

I kept checking the rearview mirror.

Ethan had vanished before we left the barn.

So had the answers.

When we reached home, the front door was open.

I stopped the car.

“Stay inside.””

Sarah touched my shoulder.

“Daniel.””

“I'll check.””

Margaret remained with Lily.

I stepped into the house.

The silence felt wrong.

The furniture was untouched.

The television was off.

But the nursery door stood open.

I climbed the stairs.

My hand tightened around the fireplace poker I'd brought from the car.

The nursery looked exactly as it had that morning.

Lily's stuffed animals lined the shelves.

Her drawings covered the walls.

Her old crib sat in the corner.

I searched beneath the dresser.

Nothing.

Then Sarah walked in behind me.

“The blue key was here.””

She crossed to the old wooden toy chest.

Her fingers moved across its lid.

“I gave this to Lily when she was three.””

I opened it.

Toys spilled onto the floor.

A tiny wooden horse.

A broken music box.

A stack of picture books.

Nothing else.

Sarah crouched.

“Wait.””

She reached beneath the chest.

There was a narrow metal plate screwed into the floor.

I knelt beside her.

“What is that?””

“I don't know.””

I removed the screws.

A small cavity appeared.

Inside was a blue key.

Lily gasped from the doorway.

“That one!””

Sarah picked it up.

Then she started crying.

“I remember hiding it.””

I hugged her.

“You're here now.””

She looked at me.

“I should have come back sooner.””

“You didn't know.””

“I knew enough.””

“No.””

I touched her scar gently.

“You survived. That's what matters.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Lily pointed at the key.

“Daddy, it opens the desk.””

“What desk?””

She pointed toward the corner.

Sarah followed her gaze.

An antique writing desk stood against the wall.

I had never noticed the small lock beneath the drawer.

The blue key fit perfectly.

Inside was a stack of documents.

Bank statements.

Corporate records.

Photographs.

And a sealed envelope.

Sarah picked it up.

Her name was written across the front in her own handwriting.

She opened it.

The first page contained a list of names.

Ethan.

Rebecca.

Three company executives.

Then one final name.

I read it twice.

My father's.

“That's impossible.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Your father?””

“He died seven years ago.””

She flipped the page.

There were bank transfers dated only six months earlier.

Money had been moved from an account bearing my father's name.

I stared at the numbers.

“He had a secret account?””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

“Then whose was it?””

A floorboard creaked behind us.

Margaret appeared in the doorway.

She saw the documents.

Her face went pale.

“Put those away.””

I stood.

“Why?””

“Because whoever owns that account knows where you live.””

Sarah looked at her.

“Margaret, how much did you know?””

Margaret lowered her head.

“I knew your father wasn't involved.””

“Then tell me whose account it was.””

She hesitated.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Margaret whispered,

“Your father's account was opened using a power of attorney.””

“Whose?””

She looked toward Rebecca.

Rebecca stood at the bottom of the stairs.

“I didn't know.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Not you.””

Everyone froze.

Margaret pointed to the final page.

“The authorization was signed by Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Sarah grabbed the paper.

“That isn't his signature.””

Margaret nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at the forged signature.

It was almost perfect.

Almost.

But there was one detail wrong.

My middle initial.

Whoever forged it had used an initial I stopped using when I was eighteen.

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who had access to old records.

Someone who knew about my father.

I turned toward Rebecca.

“Who had access to my father's files?””

She stared at me.

“I don't know.””

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was holding a photograph from the desk.

“Who's this?””

I took it from her.

My heart stopped.

The photograph showed my father standing beside Ethan.

But that wasn't the shocking part.

Rebecca was there too.

And behind them stood a woman I had never seen before.

Sarah stared at the photograph.

May you like

Then she whispered,

“I know her.””
