Chapter 13: The Vault My Father Never Opened

My mother stood up so quickly that her chair fell backward.

“Emily, give me that key.””

Everyone turned toward her.

I closed my fingers around it.

“Why?””

“Because you don't know what you're dealing with.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Linda, I strongly suggest you stop.””

She ignored him.

“Emily, listen to me. Your father made mistakes. He wasn't always honest about the business, and there are things in that vault that could hurt people.””

I looked at her.

“Which people?””

She didn't answer.

Brianna walked toward us.

“Mom, what is in that vault?””

“Nothing you need to know about.””

“Then why are you so frightened?””

Mom looked at her older daughter.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

Instead, she whispered, “Because your father was planning to destroy our family.””

Mrs. Collins shook her head.

“No, Linda. Thomas was planning to protect it.””

Mom turned toward her.

“You have no idea what happened after you left the company.””

“I know enough.””

Daniel took the key from me temporarily and examined its small metal tag.

“There's an address here.””

He read it aloud.

“Walker Atelier, Building Three, Private Archive.””

Mrs. Collins nodded.

“The old studio complex. Building Three was never open to employees.””

I looked at her.

“Have you ever been inside?””

“Once. Thomas took me there shortly before he became ill. He said it was where he kept the designs he considered too valuable to sell.””

“What kind of designs?””

She looked at the pink gown.

“The ones he believed would change the fashion industry.””

The following morning, Daniel arranged access to the property through the estate administrator.

Brianna came with us.

My mother was not permitted to join the inspection because of the ongoing investigation.

She had called me eleven times before we left.

I didn't answer.

The old studio stood behind a row of industrial buildings in downtown Atlanta.

Its windows were covered in dust, and the lettering above the entrance had almost disappeared.

But the building was still standing.

I ran my fingers across the faded sign.

WALKER ATELIER.

My father had built this place.

And I had never been inside.

Mrs. Collins unlocked the front entrance.

The smell of old fabric and wood greeted us.

There were cutting tables, sewing machines, mannequins, and shelves filled with pattern books.

A large photograph of my father hung behind the reception desk.

He was smiling.

I had to look away.

Brianna stood beside me.

“I wish I'd known him better.””

I looked at her.

“You remember him.””

“Not enough. I was eight when he died. I remember him taking me to get ice cream. I remember him telling me not to pull threads out of your sewing projects.””

Despite everything, I smiled faintly.

“He caught you?””

“Three times.””

We followed Mrs. Collins down a narrow hallway.

At the end was a steel door.

A small plaque read:

*PRIVATE DESIGN ARCHIVE — AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY.*

Daniel checked the key.

“Let's see.””

It fitted perfectly.

The lock turned.

Inside was a small room with climate-controlled cabinets, wooden drawers, and a large desk.

A single mannequin stood in the center.

It wore a pink dress.

I stopped breathing.

It was my father's original Rose Legacy design.

The gown was more elaborate than mine, with layers of rose-colored silk and intricate silver embroidery.

Five flowers decorated the bodice.

A sixth flower rested near the hem.

Just like mine.

Mrs. Collins covered her mouth.

“Thomas finished it.””

I approached the mannequin.

There was a small plaque beneath it.

*THE ROSE LEGACY — ORIGINAL MASTER DESIGN.*

Then I noticed a framed photograph on the desk.

My father was standing beside a little girl.

Me.

I was probably six years old, holding a piece of pink fabric and smiling at the camera.

On the back was a handwritten note.

She doesn't know it yet, but one day she'll finish this.

I felt tears running down my face.

Daniel opened the first cabinet.

Inside were dozens of original sketches.

Some were marked with dates.

Others had handwritten notes about the materials, measurements, and construction methods.

Then he found a thick black folder.

“Emily, I think this is what we're looking for.””

The folder contained a complete copy of the original Walker Design Trust, the partnership dissolution, and a sealed financial audit.

But beneath those documents was a small digital recording device.

Evelyn's name was written on the label.

Mrs. Collins looked surprised.

“That's the original recording archive.””

Daniel connected it to his laptop.

There were six files.

The first contained a meeting between my father, my mother, and Richard.

The second was a conversation about the fake company.

The third was a discussion about the trust.

But the fourth file had a different title.

*LINDA — PRIVATE CONFESSION.*

I stared at the screen.

“Why would Dad record a confession?””

Daniel hesitated.

“We should listen.””

He pressed play.

My mother's voice filled the room.

“Thomas, I know what I did was wrong. But I didn't think Richard would take everything.””

Then my father's voice answered.

“You knew he was moving the money.””

“I thought he was investing it.””

“You signed the transfers, Linda.””

There was a long silence.

Then Mom began crying.

“I was trying to secure a future for Brianna.””

My hands went cold.

My father spoke again.

“Emily is your daughter, too.””

“I know!””

“Then why did you allow Richard to register her designs under his company?””

Mom sobbed.

“He said it was temporary.””

“And the money?””

“I used some of it.””

“How much?””

“I don't know anymore.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel noticed another file.

Its title was:

*FINAL INSTRUCTIONS — DO NOT OPEN UNTIL EMILY IS SEVENTEEN.*

He pressed play.

My father's voice returned.

“My sweet Emily, if you're hearing this, you've found the vault. That means you've completed the Rose Legacy design, and someone has tried to take it from you.””

I covered my mouth.

He continued.

“There's something you need to understand. I never wanted you to inherit a company simply because I was your father. I wanted you to have the freedom to build something of your own.””

A pause.

“Everything in this room belongs to you. But there's one final decision.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

The recording continued.

“If you choose to accept the studio, you must first discover who truly owns the building.””

Mrs. Collins frowned.

“Thomas owned this property.””

Daniel checked the deed.

Then his expression changed.

“Not anymore.””

I turned toward him.

“What do you mean?””

He showed us the latest property registration.

The building had been transferred to a private company six months earlier.

The company was called Rosebridge Holdings.

And its registered owner was...

*Brianna Walker.*

My sister stared at the screen.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I never bought this building.””

Daniel examined the signature.

“Someone used your name.””

Then my phone rang.

It was Richard Hale.

I answered.

His voice was calm.

“Now you understand why I wanted that key.””

I stared at the deed.

“What did you do?””

Richard chuckled.

May you like

“Your father left you a beautiful inheritance, Emily. Unfortunately, he forgot to tell you that I already own the building.””

Then he hung up.
