Chapter 11: The Signature That Exposed Everything
The following morning, I arrived at the convention center with Arthur and Denise.
I hadn't slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my mother's signature beneath my name.
The sponsor's legal department had requested an emergency meeting.
Margaret Collins was waiting inside a private conference room.
Daniel Brooks sat beside her, surrounded by folders.
"Aaliyah, thank you for coming," Margaret said.
I sat down.
"Have you reviewed the documents?""
Daniel nodded.
"We've reviewed the management agreement and the prize-transfer request. Both contain signatures attributed to you.""
"They're fake.""
"We believe there are serious inconsistencies.""
Arthur placed the original signature samples on the table.
"These are documents Aaliyah signed herself over the last several years. Her handwriting is consistent.""
Daniel compared them.
Then he held up the forged agreement.
"The letter A is different. The signature also contains a stroke pattern that doesn't match her usual writing.""
I looked at Margaret.
"What happens now?""
She folded her hands.
"First, your competition results remain valid. Second, no prize money will be transferred until ownership and payment instructions are independently verified.""
I exhaled.
At least Gloria couldn't take the money.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
"There's another issue. Your mother's application included a statement claiming that she financed the creation of your competition cake.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
He read from the document.
"Mrs. Johnson stated that she purchased the ingredients, supervised production, and provided the original design concept.""
I almost laughed.
"She didn't buy anything. I paid for everything with my own savings.""
"Do you have receipts?""
"Yes.""
I opened my phone.
For months, I'd photographed every purchase.
Butter.
Flour.
Chocolate.
Food coloring.
Specialty molds.
Even the edible gold powder.
I had receipts from three different stores.
Daniel reviewed them.
"These are useful.""
Then I remembered something else.
"My grocery store manager let me use the employee discount. He might remember.""
Arthur nodded.
"Let's collect those records.""
Margaret leaned back.
"There's something I want to tell you privately.""
I looked at her.
"The sponsor has been reviewing your grandmother's recipe licensing history. We discovered that several products sold under another company's brand appear to use Eleanor and Denise's original chocolate rose formula.""
"Which company?""
She handed me a sheet.
I recognized the name immediately.
Sweet Crown Desserts.
Tessa had posted photographs from one of their promotional events months earlier.
She'd even tagged my mother.
I looked at Denise.
"Do you know them?""
Denise nodded slowly.
"Gloria negotiated with them.""
Arthur opened another folder.
"The company appears to have purchased rights from an intermediary claiming to represent the original owners.""
"Who was the intermediary?""
He turned the page.
Gloria Johnson.
I stared at the document.
"How much did she receive?""
Daniel checked the financial summary.
"Approximately $92,000 in payments across several agreements.""
Denise closed her eyes.
"That money should never have gone to her.""
Then the conference room door opened.
Tessa entered.
Her eyes were swollen, and she looked as if she'd spent the entire night crying.
"Can I speak with Aaliyah?""
I glanced at Arthur.
He nodded.
Tessa sat across from me.
For several seconds, she didn't speak.
Then she placed a small envelope on the table.
"I brought something.""
"What is it?""
"Photographs.""
She opened it.
Inside were printed screenshots of conversations between her and Gloria.
My stomach tightened as I read them.
One message was dated three months earlier.
*Gloria:* Your sister's competition cake will be ready next week. I'll handle getting it to you.
*Tessa:* Are you sure she'll let me use it?
*Gloria:* She doesn't need to know. I'll take care of her.
Another conversation showed Gloria sending Tessa photographs of my cake.
*Gloria:* Use these as your inspiration. Tell the judges you developed the design yourself.
*Tessa:* What if they ask for the original recipe?
*Gloria:* They won't. Just smile and talk about Grandma.
I slowly lowered the papers.
"You knew.""
Tessa began crying.
"Yes.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"You knew before she took it?""
She nodded.
"Mom told me she was going to give me your cake. I didn't stop her.""
"Why?""
Tessa wiped her face.
"Because I wanted to win.""
I stared at her.
"Was forty thousand dollars of Grandma's money not enough?""
She flinched.
"I know.""
"Did you ever think about what I wanted?""
She looked down.
"No.""
The honesty hurt.
But at least it was honesty.
Tessa continued.
"I also found something on Mom's laptop. She has been keeping records of the money she received from Sweet Crown. There's a spreadsheet with all the payments.""
Arthur immediately leaned forward.
"Can you provide it?""
"I copied it to a USB drive.""
She placed a small device on the table.
"There's something else.""
I waited.
Tessa's voice dropped.
"Mom has been telling people that Denise stole the original recipe book. She planned to use that accusation to make sure Denise couldn't challenge the licensing agreements.""
Denise looked devastated.
"She was going to destroy my reputation again.""
Tessa nodded.
"There's an email from Mom to a lawyer. She was preparing a claim against Denise.""
Arthur examined the drive.
"We'll preserve this and have it reviewed.""
I looked at Tessa.
"Why are you giving us this now?""
She swallowed.
"Because yesterday, Mom told me something.""
"What?""
"She said that if you won the competition, she would make sure you never got to open the bakery.""
My blood ran cold.
Tessa pulled out her phone.
"She sent me a voice message.""
She pressed play.
Gloria's voice filled the room.
"That bakery is supposed to belong to this family. If Aaliyah thinks she can take everything and leave us with nothing, she's mistaken. I've already made arrangements. Once the competition is over, she'll have no choice but to hand over the business.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And stood.
"What's happened?"" Margaret asked.
Daniel looked at me.
"Sweet Crown Desserts has just contacted our legal department.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
He swallowed.
"They've received a formal notice from someone claiming to be the exclusive owner of the chocolate rose formula.""
Denise shook her head.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel turned his laptop around.
The notice contained a digital signature.
Gloria Johnson.
But underneath it was a clause I recognized from Grandma's documents.
The agreement was supposedly signed by Denise.
I looked at my aunt.
"Did you sign this?""
She stared at the screen.
Then her face went white.
"No.""
Arthur leaned closer.
He read the final paragraph.
May you like
Then he looked at me.
"Someone has forged Denise's signature, too.""
