Chapter 4: The Second Dead Signature
"Whose signature was it, Robert?""
I could hear my own heartbeat through the phone.
My attorney didn't answer immediately.
"Your father's.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"The bank account application contains what appears to be your father's signature. It was submitted six years after his death, just like the medical authorization.""
I gripped the edge of my desk.
"Are you telling me someone forged my father's signature twice?""
"At least twice. We're still examining the other documents.""
I stood and walked toward the office window.
Outside, people were crossing the parking lot, carrying coffee and talking about their weekend plans.
Ordinary people.
Ordinary lives.
Meanwhile, someone had apparently built an entire financial scheme around my dead father.
"Robert, I want every document. Every transaction. Every name connected to that account.""
"That's exactly what we're working on.""
"And Daniel?""
"We have reason to believe he personally submitted several documents. However, we need the complete footage before making any formal accusations.""
I ended the call and immediately contacted Paige.
She arrived at my office forty minutes later.
When I explained everything, she sat silently for several seconds.
"Connor, there's something we haven't considered.""
"What?""
"Why would Daniel risk committing fraud for your mother?""
"Because Melissa needed money?""
"Maybe. But why would he personally submit forged documents? Why would he put himself in that position?""
I didn't have an answer.
That evening, Robert emailed us a preliminary account summary.
We printed it and spread the pages across our dining table.
The original trust contained $60,000.
Four grandchildren.
Approximately $15,000 each.
Melissa's daughters had received distributions totaling nearly $28,000 between them, including investment earnings.
Emma and Riley's combined allocations had been depleted through unauthorized withdrawals and questionable expenses.
Paige circled one transaction.
"$3,200. What's this?""
I read the description.
"Educational enrichment.""
"Which school received it?""
I searched the attached records.
There was no school listed.
Another payment was marked as dental treatment.
No dentist.
Another was marked as summer childcare.
No childcare provider.
Then we found something that made Paige sit upright.
A $9,700 transfer had been sent to a company called Bennett Family Holdings.
I had never heard of it.
"Do you know this company?"" Paige asked.
"No.""
"Could it belong to Melissa?""
I searched the business name.
It was registered in North Carolina, with a mailing address matching Daniel and Melissa's home.
I felt my stomach turn.
"They didn't just take the money," I said.
"They created a business to receive it.""
Paige stared at the paperwork.
"Connor, we need to know exactly who owns that company.""
The next morning, Robert confirmed that Bennett Family Holdings was registered to Daniel.
But that wasn't the worst discovery.
The company had received money from several separate trust transactions.
And one of the transfers had been labeled:
REIMBURSEMENT FOR BENEFICIARY MEDICAL CARE — RILEY BENNETT.
Riley.
Again.
I called Robert.
"Why does Daniel's company keep receiving money under my daughter's name?""
"We're investigating that. But I want you to see something else.""
He sent another attachment.
It was a scanned copy of a bank authorization form.
The signature at the bottom was familiar.
Too familiar.
My father's name appeared beneath a statement authorizing the opening of a secondary account.
But the signature looked slightly different from the original trust agreement.
I enlarged the image.
There was an unusual loop in the letter B.
My father had never written his B that way.
"Robert, this isn't Dad's handwriting.""
"That's what our preliminary document examiner believes.""
I leaned back.
"Then who signed it?""
"That's the next question.""
Later that afternoon, I received a text from Melissa.
We need to talk. Please don't tell Mom.
I showed Paige.
She frowned.
"Ask her what she wants.""
I typed:
About what?
Her reply came almost immediately.
Daniel has been lying to me.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
I think Mom knows everything.
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was Melissa.
"Connor," she whispered, "I need you to listen carefully.""
"What's happening?""
"Daniel told me the money was Dad's gift. He said Mom had permission to distribute it however she wanted.""
"And you believed him?""
"I didn't know the documents were fake!""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
She began crying.
"Because I thought you would hate me.""
I looked at Paige.
She was watching me closely.
"Melissa, what exactly did Daniel do?""
Her answer came in a shaky whisper.
"He brought Mom a folder last year. He said he had found something in Dad's old files. Mom told him to destroy it after the bank processed the withdrawal.""
My grip tightened.
"What was in the folder?""
Melissa took a breath.
"A document with Dad's signature.""
May you like
Then she said something that made me stand up.
"Connor, I think Mom has the original paperwork hidden somewhere in her house.""
