Chapter 13: The Uncle Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

My father read the access record three times.

Then he sat down.

For thirty years, he'd believed his younger brother was dead. He'd attended a funeral, received a death certificate, and spent years avoiding the subject because the memory was too painful.

Now a single document had turned that certainty into a lie.

"Where did you get this?"" he asked Daniel.

Daniel swallowed.

"My father kept it in his private office. I found it while searching for the original recording.""

"Why would Jonathan have a hotel access record bearing Thomas's name?""

"I don't know. But the signature matched the one on the vehicle registration documents.""

Catherine placed both records side by side.

"We need to verify their authenticity. A name and signature aren't enough to establish that Thomas Sterling is alive or that he personally accessed the property.""

My father nodded mechanically.

"Verify everything.""

I watched him stare at the documents.

"Dad, do you remember the last time you saw Uncle Thomas?""

He looked up slowly.

"The night your mother died.""

My heart tightened.

"You said you were at home.""

"I was. Thomas called me just after midnight. He said he'd been at the Grand Wellington and that your mother had left before he could speak to her.""

"Did he tell you about the accident?""

"Not that night. I learned about it the following morning.""

My father rubbed his forehead.

"Two years later, he called me again. He said he was going away for a while and that I shouldn't try to find him. A few weeks after that, someone contacted me claiming he'd died in a boating accident.""

"Did you see the body?""

"No.""

The answer fell between us like a stone.

I gripped the edge of the table.

"You believed your brother was dead because someone told you he was?""

"There was a death certificate. There were reports from the authorities. I had no reason to believe the documents were false.""

"But you never saw him.""

"No.""

My father looked at the photograph of my mother and Thomas.

"I should have questioned it.""

I reached across the table.

"You were grieving Mom. You were raising a four-year-old. You believed what the authorities told you.""

He gave a faint, broken smile.

"You're kinder to me than I deserve.""

Before I could answer, Catherine's phone rang.

She listened for nearly a minute, then opened her laptop.

"The access record appears to be genuine," she announced.

"The hotel system registered an entry using a credential assigned to a former senior administrator. The credential was originally issued to Thomas Sterling.""

My father straightened.

"Can you trace where it was used?""

"Not beyond the property. But the system shows the card was used to enter the service corridor leading to the archive.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"My father knew Thomas was alive.""

Catherine glanced at him.

"What makes you say that?""

"Because Jonathan mentioned him during an argument last month. He said Thomas was the only person who could prove what happened to Margaret.""

My father stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

"Why didn't you tell us that earlier?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Because I didn't know whether it was true. And because my father threatened to expose the documents I'd taken from Sterling Holdings if I spoke.""

"You had evidence of a potentially serious crime," Catherine said.

"Why didn't you contact an attorney?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because I was afraid of losing everything.""

I felt a familiar bitterness rise.

"You were afraid of losing your job, your money, and your family's approval. I was afraid my baby might be born while I was being accused of theft by people who claimed to love me.""

He lowered his head.

"I know.""

"No, Daniel. You're beginning to understand.""

Catherine closed her laptop.

"We should arrange a controlled meeting if Thomas can be located. We must not confront him without appropriate safeguards.""

My father nodded.

"Find him.""

Within an hour, the security team had traced a recent payment connected to a small apartment near the Dallas Arts District. The lease was held under a different name, but the emergency contact listed on the application was Jonathan Bennett.

Catherine arranged for the relevant authorities to verify the information.

At four in the afternoon, my father received a call.

Thomas had been located.

He was alive.

And he had agreed to meet us.

We chose a private conference room at the attorney's office. Security waited outside, and Catherine ensured that the meeting would be documented appropriately.

I sat beside my father.

Daniel was not invited to participate in the initial conversation. His own conduct was under investigation, and Catherine wanted to keep the interviews separate.

At exactly five fifteen, the door opened.

The man who entered was older, thinner, and grayer than the photographs I remembered from childhood.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

My father's eyes.

Thomas Sterling stopped when he saw his older brother.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then my father rose.

"Thomas.""

His younger brother looked at the floor.

"Richard.""

My father took one step toward him.

"You let me bury you.""

Thomas's face crumpled.

"I know.""

"You let me tell Vivienne that she'd lost another person who loved her.""

"I know.""

"You let me spend thirty years wondering what happened to Margaret.""

Thomas began to cry.

"I never wanted any of this.""

My father struck the table with his palm.

"Then why did you disappear?""

Thomas flinched.

"Because Jonathan told me what would happen if I stayed.""

"Tell us what happened to Margaret," I said.

Thomas turned toward me.

For the first time, he seemed to notice that the little girl he'd once carried on his shoulders was now a pregnant woman sitting across from him.

"Vivienne," he whispered.

"Don't call me that as if you know me.""

He nodded, accepting the rebuke.

Then he sat down.

"Your mother discovered that Jonathan had been moving money through fraudulent contracts. I was supposed to help her collect the evidence.""

"Why were you involved?""

"Because I was working for the company at the time. I knew where the records were kept.""

"And the night she died?""

Thomas covered his face.

"I arranged the meeting with Jonathan. I believed he would hand over the original files. Instead, he arrived with another man.""

"Who?""

Thomas looked at my father.

"Arthur Bennett.""

Chloe's grandfather.

The man whose ring had supposedly been stolen at the wedding.

Thomas continued.

"They argued with Margaret. Arthur wanted her to surrender the documents. She refused.

Jonathan threatened her. I tried to intervene, but Arthur told me to stay out of it.""

My father gripped the table.

"What happened to her car?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"I followed her after she left the hotel. I wanted to make sure she reached home safely.""

"And?""

"I saw another car following her. It was driven by Arthur's security chief. I called Jonathan, but he told me not to get involved.""

Thomas's voice broke.

"Minutes later, Margaret's car went off the road.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Did you see the crash?""

"Yes.""

"Did you call for help?""

Thomas began sobbing.

"I stopped. I ran toward the car. But Jonathan arrived before the police. He told me that if I told anyone what I'd seen, he'd make sure Richard was blamed for everything.""

My father stared at his brother.

"You could have told me.""

"I was a coward.""

Thomas reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.

"There's something else. I kept the original recording from that night. I hid it before I disappeared.""

Catherine immediately secured the document and arranged for the recording to be transferred through the proper channels.

My father didn't look away from Thomas.

"Why come forward now?""

Thomas turned toward me.

"Because I saw the footage from Chloe's wedding. I watched what they did to you, and I realized Jonathan was using the same methods he used against your mother.""

He wiped his eyes.

"I couldn't let him do it again.""

Catherine's phone rang.

She listened, then turned pale.

"The authorities have found a second recording in Thomas's apartment.""

My father frowned.

"What does it contain?""

Catherine looked at me.

"A conversation between Jonathan Bennett and Arthur Bennett recorded two days after Margaret's death.""

May you like

She paused.

"And it appears to identify the person who deliberately forced her car off the road.""
