Chapter 2: The Eight-Million-Dollar Secret

My father had always taught me that money revealed character.

Not because wealthy people were better than anyone else, but because money gave people opportunities to show who they really were.

I understood that lesson when I was a child.

I never imagined I'd have to learn it from my own husband.

“Before anyone discusses business,” Dad said, “my daughter and granddaughter are going to the hospital.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Richard, please. We need to talk before you make any decisions.””

Dad didn't even look at him.

“Your wife is injured. Your daughter is terrified. If you have something important to say, you can say it after they've received medical care.””

Linda planted herself in front of the doorway.

“This is a family matter. You can't come into my house and start issuing threats.””

Dad finally turned toward her.

“Your family matter became my concern when you struck my daughter.””

“I barely touched her!””

My father's attorney, Mr. Collins, opened a slim leather folder.

“Mrs. Harrington, fourteen witnesses observed the incident. We also have photographs documenting the visible injuries.””

Linda's mouth fell open.

“Photographs? Who has been taking photographs?””

One of Daniel's cousins quietly lowered his phone.

Linda glared at him.

“You wouldn't dare!””

“Mrs. Harrington,” Mr. Collins interrupted, “I recommend that you stop addressing witnesses.””

For the first time that evening, Linda had nothing to say.

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Go with Emma. I'll explain everything once you're safe.””

I wanted to stay. I wanted to know what agreement had frightened Daniel so badly.

But Emma was crying again, and every time she moved, the soup-soaked fabric brushed against my skin.

So I kissed my father's cheek and left.

At the hospital, a nurse carefully removed my sweater while another examined the reddened skin across my upper chest. The doctor explained that I had superficial burns and areas that needed continued monitoring. They cooled and treated the affected skin, gave me instructions for wound care, and advised me to return immediately if the pain worsened or signs of infection appeared.

Emma sat beside my bed with a warm blanket around her shoulders.

“Mommy?””

I turned toward her.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are we bad people?””

My heart broke.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Grandma said you don't belong in the family. And Daddy said you made her angry.””

I took her tiny hands.

“Listen to me, Emma. You did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong by asking someone to treat me kindly.””

“But Daddy didn't help you.””

I swallowed.

“No. He didn't.””

She studied my face for a long moment.

“Will he help us next time?””

I didn't have an answer.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Dad appeared.

*I'm coming to the hospital. Don't contact Daniel until we've spoken.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*You deserve to know the truth. All of it.*

An hour later, Dad walked into the hospital room carrying a paper bag containing a new sweater for me and a stuffed reindeer for Emma.

He knelt beside her.

“Your grandfather brought you a Christmas present.””

Emma hugged the reindeer but didn't smile.

“Are you mad at Daddy?””

Dad paused.

“I'm disappointed in some of the choices adults have made. But none of this is your fault.””

She nodded and leaned against my side.

Dad waited until a nurse had checked my injuries before pulling a chair beside my bed.

“Sarah, do you know how the Harrington family makes its money?””

“They own property development companies,” I answered.

“Daniel said his father built the business from nothing.””

“That's partly true. But their company has been struggling for years. Several developments ran over budget.

Two major lenders withdrew their support. Their flagship project is now facing foreclosure.””

I frowned.

“Why didn't Daniel tell me?””

“Because he wanted to solve the problem without admitting how serious it had become.””

Dad opened his folder.

“Six months ago, Daniel approached Bennett Capital for an emergency investment of eight million dollars.””

I stared at him.

“Eight million?””

“That's what he requested. I agreed to consider it after reviewing the company's finances.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Daniel specifically asked me to keep our preliminary discussions confidential while his accountants prepared the necessary documents. I respected that request at first. But when the paperwork arrived, I discovered your name on a consent form.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of consent form?””

Dad slid a photocopy across the bed.

At the bottom was my name.

Sarah Bennett.

The signature looked convincing at first glance. The letters leaned at the same angle as mine. The final stroke of the last name curved beneath the rest.

But I had never signed it.

“This authorizes the company to use certain jointly held assets as security for the financing,” Dad explained.

“It also states that you reviewed the risks and approved the transaction.””

I shook my head.

“I've never seen this document.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because I asked Daniel to arrange a meeting with you before anything was signed. Instead, he submitted the paperwork electronically, claiming you had already approved it.””

I stared at the signature.

“Did you give him the money?””

Dad's expression hardened.

“Four million dollars was released as the first installment after the initial documentation was accepted. The remaining four million was subject to further verification.””

I felt dizzy.

“Where did the first four million go?””

“Some went toward company obligations. Other transfers raised serious concerns.””

He handed me another page.

The transactions listed several payments to a luxury boutique owned by Melissa Harrington.

The total was six hundred thousand dollars.

I read the number twice.

“Six hundred thousand dollars?””

Dad nodded.

“Your sister-in-law's boutique received the payments through a series of transfers from an account associated with the development business.””

“Why would Daniel send her that much money?””

“That is one of the questions my investigators are trying to answer.””

I thought of Melissa laughing when Linda insulted me.

“Did she know where the money came from?””

“We don't know everything yet. But she has told our legal team that Daniel assured her the transfers were approved.””

I closed my eyes.

My husband had forged my signature. He had used my name to secure financing. And someone had apparently used the money to support his sister's business.

Yet when his mother burned me in front of fourteen relatives, he hadn't even asked whether I was all right.

Dad waited until I looked at him again.

“There's another issue.””

I felt my fingers tighten around the blanket.

“What now?””

He placed a separate document beside the first.

It was an application involving Emma's financial trust.

My daughter's name appeared at the top.

I looked up sharply.

“What is this?””

“An application to use assets connected to Emma's inheritance as collateral for another loan.””

My mouth went dry.

“Emma has an inheritance?””

Dad nodded.

“When your grandmother passed away, she established a trust for Emma's future. The money is intended for her education and long-term needs. You are named as her primary guardian for financial decisions, subject to the trust's terms.””

I stared at Daniel's signature on the document.

Then I saw Linda's.

“What did they do?””

“The application appears to have been submitted without the required authorization.””

I couldn't breathe properly.

“They used my daughter's inheritance?””

Dad's voice softened.

“That's what we're investigating.””

I looked at Emma, who was sleeping against the pillow, her little reindeer tucked beneath her chin.

Five years ago, I'd married Daniel because he made me feel safe.

Now I was learning that the man who had promised to protect our daughter had placed her future at risk without even telling me.

My phone rang.

Daniel's name appeared on the screen.

I rejected the call.

It rang again.

Then a text arrived.

*Sarah, please don't let your father destroy my family. You don't understand what Mom was trying to do.*

I stared at the message.

Dad read it over my shoulder.

“Don't respond yet.””

A second message appeared.

*If you leave me, you'll lose more than your marriage. There's something about Emma's trust you haven't been told.*

My blood ran cold.

I turned toward Dad.

“What else is there?””

He took the document from my hands and examined the final page.

Then he went completely still.

“Richard?”” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Sarah, I think Daniel and Linda were preparing for a legal fight over Emma before tonight ever happened.””

And when he showed me the attached declaration, I saw my husband's signature beneath a statement claiming I was emotionally unstable and unfit to raise our daughter.
