Chapter 7: The Recording Patricia Never Knew Existed

By noon, my wedding dress was hanging over a chair in my father's bedroom, and three attorneys were reviewing documents that could connect my name to hundreds of thousands of dollars in questionable transactions.

I sat at the kitchen table wearing one of Dad's old sweatshirts, staring at the business registration on my laptop.

Parker Advisory Solutions LLC.

My name.

My address.

My signature.

None of it belonged to me.

Dad placed a plate of toast beside my laptop.

“Eat something, sweetheart.””

“I can't.””

“You haven't eaten since yesterday.””

“I got married yesterday, Dad. Today, I might be responsible for debts I never agreed to.””

He pulled out a chair.

“Then we'll deal with the facts one at a time.””

I looked up at him.

“How can you be so calm?””

“Because panicking won't protect you. Preparing will.””

Before I could answer, Daniel Reeves arrived carrying two thick folders. He'd spent the morning coordinating with my attorney, who had begun assembling evidence of the unauthorized company registration.

Daniel placed the folders on the table.

“We have a clearer picture now,” he said.

“The holding company received assets and payments from Whitmore Construction. Your company received at least two hundred forty thousand dollars from the holding company. Some of those funds were then transferred to accounts we haven't fully identified.””

“Can they make me repay the money?”” I asked.

“That depends on what the evidence establishes and what legal obligations actually exist. A company registration bearing your name doesn't automatically prove you authorized it. We'll preserve the records and challenge any false representations.””

Dad leaned forward.

“What about the electronic signature?””

Daniel opened the first folder.

“The signature was submitted through an online filing service. The account used to create it was accessed from a device associated with the Whitmore family's office.””

“Associated with Patricia?”” I asked.

“We're still confirming who used it. I don't want to accuse someone before the evidence is complete.””

I appreciated his caution, but it didn't ease the knot in my stomach.

Then Daniel removed a printed email.

“This came from the holding company's administrative account. It was sent the morning after the company was registered.””

The recipient was Patricia.

The subject line read: *Contingency Plan — Phase Two.*

I read the message twice.

Once the wedding is complete, Ethan will have no reason to resist the restructuring. Olivia's company will absorb the outstanding liabilities, and Rachel can assume her position if the marriage fails.

My fingers went numb.

“They planned this before the wedding.””

Daniel nodded.

“The email appears to show that the arrangement was being discussed in advance. We still need the underlying records and full context.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Who wrote it?””

“The account belongs to an administrative assistant employed by Whitmore Construction. We're requesting the original message and its transmission history.””

I stared at the final sentence.

Rachel can assume her position.

I wasn't a wife in Patricia's plan.

I was a temporary obstacle to be removed when convenient.

My phone buzzed.

Ethan.

I ignored it.

It buzzed again.

Then a message appeared.

Olivia, please answer. I found something in Mom's office. You need to see it.

I showed Dad.

He read the message, then looked at Daniel.

“Can we arrange a meeting with the attorneys present?””

Daniel nodded.

“That's the safest option.””

I typed a response.

Bring the documents to my father's house. Do not come alone, and do not remove anything else from your mother's office.

Ethan replied almost immediately.

There's something worse than the company registration.

An hour later, he arrived with his attorney, a woman named Meredith Cole. He looked as if he hadn't slept. His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were red.

He placed a small black recording device on the table.

“I found this in Mom's desk,” he said.

Daniel studied it without touching it.

“Where exactly?””

“Inside a locked drawer. I was looking for the original loan paperwork when I found a folder marked ‘Olivia.’ The device was underneath it.””

My heart pounded.

“Why would your mother have a recording device in a folder with my name?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know. But there's a recording on it.””

Meredith intervened.

“Before anyone listens, we need to establish how this device was obtained and whether accessing or sharing the recording raises legal issues. Ethan, did you have permission to enter that drawer?””

“It was my office, too.””

“That's not necessarily the same as permission to access every item inside it,” she replied.

“We need to be careful.””

Daniel agreed. After the attorneys documented where the device had been found, Ethan explained that he'd discovered the file while searching for records relevant to the company's restructuring. His attorney arranged for the device to be preserved and reviewed properly.

Later that afternoon, Daniel called with an update.

The recording appeared to contain a conversation between Patricia and Rachel.

I sat beside Dad while Daniel played the verified audio through his laptop.

Patricia's voice filled the kitchen.

“Once Ethan signs the transfer, the old company will be exposed to the loan. Olivia's company will carry the liabilities. If everything works, the Whitmore assets will remain protected.””

Rachel's voice followed.

“And Olivia?””

“Olivia will leave when she discovers Ethan's finances. She'll be too embarrassed to fight us.””

My stomach twisted.

Then Rachel asked the question that made Dad sit straighter.

“What if she doesn't leave?””

Patricia laughed.

“Then we make sure she has a reason.””

The recording continued.

“We already have her identification. The company is registered. If she becomes difficult, the outstanding debts will make her look like she was involved from the beginning.””

I covered my mouth.

Dad reached for my hand.

The recording ended with Rachel asking, “And Ethan?””

Patricia's reply was almost cheerful.

“He'll do what I tell him. He always does.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan stood so abruptly that his chair scraped backward.

“She was going to frame my wife.””

His voice broke on the last word.

Meredith placed a hand on his arm.

“Sit down, Ethan. We need to preserve this properly.””

He sank into his chair, staring at the laptop.

“I trusted her with everything.””

I looked at him.

“So did I.””

He turned toward me.

“Olivia, I swear I didn't know.””

I believed he might be telling the truth about the scheme.

But the truth about his silence remained.

“You didn't have to know every detail to defend me,” I said.

He bowed his head.

Daniel closed his folder.

“We have evidence suggesting a deliberate plan, but we need corroboration. The original company records, bank transfers, emails, and signatures will matter more than any single recording.””

Then his phone rang.

He listened, his expression tightening.

“What do you mean the original records are missing?””

He stood.

“From which office?””

A long pause followed.

When he hung up, he looked directly at Ethan.

“Someone entered Whitmore Construction's accounting office last night.””

Ethan's face drained of color.

“What was taken?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“The original loan file, the company transfer records, and every document relating to Parker Advisory Solutions.””

Then he added one final detail.

“The office security system shows that the person who entered used Ethan's access code.””
