Chapter 14: The Evidence That Destroyed Them

Three days later, I stood inside a conference room at the Nashville courthouse.

Rebecca sat beside me.

Across the table were representatives from the financial investigation team, along with an attorney representing the lender.

Vanessa had agreed to provide a formal statement.

Michael had surrendered copies of the original property records.

Linda had supplied the accounting ledgers my father had left behind.

For the first time, everything was being examined by people who had no personal connection to the Brooks family.

And the picture was far worse than I had imagined.

The $185,000 loan against my house was only one part of a much larger pattern.

Investigators had identified several transfers involving companies controlled by Patricia and Daniel.

Some were legitimate property investments.

Others appeared to involve false authorizations, undisclosed accounts, and money moved between entities without proper documentation.

My father's old property sale had also been reopened for review.

But the most important evidence came from Vanessa.

She had brought her laptop.

"I saved everything," she explained.

Every message Daniel had sent her.

Every hotel reservation.

Every payment confirmation.

Every photograph of the documents he'd left in his briefcase.

Rebecca helped organize the files.

Then Vanessa opened a folder labeled *WEDDING PLANS*.

I looked at her.

"What's that?""

She hesitated.

"Daniel asked me to help organize a second wedding.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"A second wedding?""

"He said he wanted to marry me after the divorce was finalized.""

She opened a document.

It contained a proposed guest list, venue details, and a draft invitation.

The wedding date was six weeks away.

But the most disturbing part was the name of the person listed as the person responsible for the financial arrangements.

Patricia Brooks.

I shook my head.

"They were planning your wedding while I was still paying the mortgage.""

Vanessa nodded sadly.

Then she opened another file.

"This is what I wanted to show you.""

It was a recorded video.

Daniel was sitting in a hotel room, speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

His voice was clear.

"Once the auction goes through, Sarah won't have anything left to challenge us with.""

A woman's voice responded.

"What if she discovers the trust?""

Daniel laughed.

"She doesn't understand the documents. Mom has been handling that for years.""

Then Patricia's voice came through.

"What about the original?""

Daniel answered:

"I'll take care of it. Michael won't talk.""

The video continued.

Patricia leaned into the frame.

"And Vanessa?""

Daniel shrugged.

"She'll get enough to keep her quiet.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Rebecca looked at the investigator.

"I believe this should be preserved as potential evidence.""

He nodded.

"Absolutely.""

I stared at the screen.

That was my husband.

The man who had held my hand at our wedding.

The man who had kissed my forehead when I cried over my father's death.

The man who had once promised that we'd grow old together.

He had been discussing how to leave me homeless.

And he had done it with a smile.

The investigator asked Vanessa whether she had any additional records.

She nodded.

"I have one more thing.""

She opened an email account and searched for a message from Patricia.

The subject line read:

*Final Arrangement — Friday Auction.*

The message contained a list of instructions.

The first involved transferring ownership of my house.

The second involved settling the private loan.

The third involved making a payment to a company in Kentucky.

But the final paragraph was the one that mattered.

*Once Sarah's property is transferred, Daniel will receive his agreed share. Vanessa's account will be closed, and all previous arrangements will be considered complete.*

Vanessa looked at me.

"That's why I never received the $75,000.""

I nodded.

"Because they used your name.""

She wiped her eyes.

"I trusted him.""

"I did too.""

For the first time, we weren't looking at each other as rivals.

We were two women who had been manipulated by the same man.

Later that afternoon, Rebecca received confirmation that the lender had suspended the scheduled auction while the disputed loan documentation was investigated.

It wasn't a final judgment, but my home was no longer facing an immediate sale.

I sat in my car outside the courthouse and cried.

Not because I missed Daniel.

Because I had spent six years trying to become part of a family that had been planning to take everything from me.

My phone rang.

It was Daniel.

I answered, putting the call on speaker.

"Sarah?""

"What do you want?""

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Please. I need you to help me.""

I looked through the windshield.

"With what?""

"Mom is saying everything was my idea.""

"Wasn't it?""

"No. She handled the documents. She introduced me to Michael. She told me how to structure the accounts.""

I laughed quietly.

"Daniel, you signed the loan.""

"I was following instructions.""

"You used my credit card.""

"Mom said it was temporary.""

"You told another woman I was dead.""

He went silent.

Then he whispered:

"I didn't know how to get out.""

I closed my eyes.

"You had six years to get out. You could have told me the truth.""

"I loved you, Sarah.""

"No. You loved what I paid for.""

He started crying.

For a moment, I remembered the man I'd married.

Then I remembered the birthday dinner.

The $5,800 bill.

His hand squeezing my knee beneath the table.

His mother's laughter.

And the fact that he'd let thirty-two relatives humiliate me because he expected me to keep paying.

"Daniel, I'm done.""

I ended the call.

Two days later, Patricia and Daniel were formally notified that the financial allegations were under investigation.

The lender confirmed that the auction would remain suspended pending resolution of the disputed security documents.

Michael provided a sworn statement.

Linda submitted the original records.

And Vanessa agreed to cooperate with the investigators regarding the unauthorized account opened in her name.

But the biggest surprise came the following Monday.

Rebecca called me into her office.

"Sarah, we've received a response from the trust administrator.""

"What does it say?""

She placed a letter on the desk.

"Your father included a final instruction in the original trust.""

I unfolded it.

The first paragraph confirmed that the house was protected for my benefit, subject to the trust's valid terms.

The second paragraph contained a condition I hadn't expected.

My father had also established a separate reserve account.

Its value had grown over the years.

Rebecca looked at me.

"Sarah, the current balance is approximately $612,000.""

I stared at her.

"Six hundred and twelve thousand?""

She nodded.

"Your father wanted you to have financial independence, regardless of what happened to the property.""

I covered my mouth.

All those years, I'd believed I'd been surviving because I worked hard enough.

My father had quietly made sure I would never be left with nothing.

And now, for the first time in six years, I had a future that didn't depend on Daniel.

But before I could celebrate, Rebecca handed me another envelope.

It was from Patricia.

There were only seven words written inside.

*You still don't know who Daniel really is.*
