Chapter 8: My Sister's Engagement Was Built on a Lie
The police took the metal case, but they allowed Daniel to photograph the letter before it was placed into evidence.
He read the final line twice.
“Do not trust the person who claims to be protecting Emily.””
Then he looked at Ryan.
“Would you care to explain why Mr. Bennett singled you out?””
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“My relationship with Emily has nothing to do with this.””
“Then you won't mind answering a few questions.””
“I'll speak to my attorney.””
“That's your right.””
Ryan turned toward Emily.
“Come on. We're leaving.””
She didn't move.
“Emily.””
She looked at the engagement ring on her finger.
“You told me Sarah was trying to ruin us.””
Ryan exhaled impatiently.
“She is trying to ruin everything because she found out about the loans.””
“You said the loans were temporary.””
“They were.””
“You said your father approved the restructuring.””
“He did.””
Robert Harrison's voice came from the driveway.
“No, I didn't.””
Everyone turned.
Robert stood beside a dark sedan, accompanied by his company's chief financial officer, Linda Brooks. His expression was cold enough to silence the porch.
Ryan's face drained of color.
“Dad, what are you doing here?””
Robert walked toward the officers.
“I received a call from our legal department this morning. They discovered that the subsidiary's board minutes had been altered.””
Ryan shook his head.
“That's impossible.””
Linda opened a leather folder.
“Three sets of minutes were submitted under your authorization. Each claimed that the board approved loans secured by third-party guarantees.””
“Those approvals were routine.””
“Not according to the other board members. None of them attended the meetings described in these records.””
Ryan looked at his father.
“You're going to believe her over me?””
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Emily.
“I'm sorry you were dragged into this. But we need to establish what happened before the company suffers further losses.””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Mr. Harrison, did Ryan know Sarah's identity was being used?””
Robert's expression softened.
“I can't answer that yet.””
Ryan stepped toward her.
“Emily, don't listen to them. You're my fiancée. We're getting married in three weeks.””
She stared at him.
“You asked me to keep Sarah away until after the wedding.””
“I said we needed to settle the financial issue first.””
“You said she would destroy everything if she found out.””
“Because she would!””
The words came out too quickly.
Ryan froze.
Emily stepped backward.
“You just admitted it.””
He recovered almost immediately.
“I meant she would destroy the company by panicking and making accusations.””
“Sarah is the person whose name was forged.””
“It's a technicality.””
I felt my hands curl into fists.
“A technicality?””
Ryan turned toward me.
“You have millions. You bought a controlling interest in a major company. You can absorb a few bad loans without ruining your life.””
I stared at him.
“That's your defense? You thought I had enough money to survive being robbed?””
“I'm saying there's a solution that doesn't require destroying two families.””
“You mean a solution where I pay for your crimes.””
He spread his hands.
“Everyone benefits if we handle this privately.””
Robert's face hardened.
“Ryan, stop talking.””
But Ryan had already turned back to Emily.
“Think about what happens if the wedding is canceled. The deposits, the venue, the house we've been planning to buy. Everything we've built together.””
Emily slowly removed her engagement ring.
Ryan stared at her hand.
“What are you doing?””
She placed the ring on the porch railing.
“I'm thinking about what we've built.””
He laughed in disbelief.
“Emily, don't be ridiculous.””
“You told me you loved me.””
“I do.””
“Then why did you tell me Sarah was the problem?””
Ryan reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
For the first time since I'd arrived at the engagement party, my sister stood without looking to our mother for approval.
I wanted to feel triumphant.
Instead, I felt tired.
Because the person who had betrayed me was also the girl I'd once carried on my back through Grandma's garden, laughing while she tried to grab apples from the branches.
And now she was discovering that the man she'd planned to marry had been willing to destroy her family to protect himself.
Robert turned to his son.
“Your access to the company's financial systems is suspended immediately.””
Ryan stared at him.
“You can't do that.””
“I can, and I have.””
“You'll destroy my career!””
“If you falsified board records and participated in fraudulent borrowing, your career is already in your hands.””
Ryan's face reddened.
“You're choosing Sarah over your own son?””
Robert looked at me, then back at Ryan.
“No. I'm choosing the truth over a lie.””
The officers asked Ryan to accompany them to the station for questioning. He protested, insisting he hadn't committed a crime, but he eventually agreed to leave with his attorney on the phone.
Before getting into the sedan, he turned toward Emily.
“You'll regret this.””
She didn't answer.
When the cars disappeared down Magnolia Lane, the silence felt enormous.
Emily sat on the porch steps, her engagement ring resting beside her.
I joined her, leaving a careful distance between us.
For several minutes, we watched the leaves move in the morning breeze.
Finally, she spoke.
“I know you're never going to forgive me.””
I looked at her.
“I haven't decided that.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I watched Mom throw you out. I watched her humiliate you, and I did nothing because I was afraid Ryan's family would think we were poor.””
“Emily, I didn't need you to defend my clothes. I needed you to defend me.””
“I know.””
“You could have told me about the loans.””
“I know.””
“You could have told me Dad was alive.””
Her face crumpled.
“I know.””
I looked away.
The anger was still there, but beneath it lay something worse: the realization that my sister had spent so long chasing approval that she'd stopped recognizing the people who actually loved her.
She reached into her purse.
“I have something else.””
She handed me a small flash drive.
“Ryan gave this to me two weeks ago. He said it contained photographs for a presentation about the logistics company.””
I turned it over in my hand.
“Why didn't you mention it earlier?””
“Because I looked at the files last night.””
“What did you find?””
“Documents. Transfers. Emails between Ryan and Mom.””
I stared at her.
“Emily, this could be evidence.””
“I know. That's why I'm giving it to you.””
Daniel approached us.
“Don't open it on a personal device. I'll have our forensic specialist make a verified copy and preserve the original.””
Emily nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“There was one email that scared me.””
“What did it say?””
She swallowed.
“Ryan told Mom that the loans weren't the real danger. He said the trust contained something that could put her in prison.””
I thought of Grandma's letter and the documents in the safe.
“What was it?””
“I don't know. The email mentioned a second set of records stored with an independent trustee.””
Daniel went very still.
“Did it name the trustee?””
Emily closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“It said the trustee was a woman named Eleanor Shaw.””
Robert's expression changed.
“Eleanor Shaw?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know that name.””
“Who is she?”” I asked.
Robert answered.
“She was the attorney who handled your grandmother's trust. She retired several years ago, and nobody at our company has heard from her since.””
Daniel opened his briefcase and removed the trust documents.
“There's an address listed in the original agreement.””
He read it aloud.
A downtown Nashville office building.
I checked the time.
“If she's still there, we can find her today.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not without confirming her current status first.””
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice spoke softly.
“Sarah Mitchell?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“My name is Eleanor Shaw. Your grandmother asked me to contact you if the trust was ever used without your consent.””
My heart pounded.
“How did you get my number?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
“Where is he?””
“Safe, for the moment.””
I gripped the phone.
“Then tell me what Grandma left me.””
Eleanor paused.
“Your grandmother didn't merely leave you money, Sarah. She left you the evidence needed to expose a crime that began long before your father's disappearance.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was already reaching for his keys.
Eleanor continued.
“And if your mother knows you've found the trust documents, you have very little time. The person who arranged the original fraud has just learned that the account is no longer secure.””
The call ended.
A second later, Daniel's phone buzzed with an alert from the bank's legal department.
He read it, and his face turned pale.
“Sarah, the account your father identified has just been emptied.””
I stared at him.
“How much was in it?””
“Nearly four million dollars.””
Then Robert spoke from behind us.
“That account wasn't supposed to contain company money.””
May you like
He looked at the bank alert again.
“It belonged to the family trust.””
