Chapter 2: The Buyer

Nobody moved.

For three full seconds, the only sound was the soft ticking of the McLaren cooling beneath the hotel lights.

Mom stared at me as if I had suddenly become a stranger.

Emily came through the doors behind her.

“Claire?””

Her future father-in-law, Richard Hale, looked at Emily.

“You didn’t know?””

Emily’s lips parted.

“Know what?””

Richard turned back to me.

“You’re Claire Bennett.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“The woman from Bennett Capital?””

I hesitated.

“I own Bennett Capital.””

Mom’s mouth dropped open.

Emily looked at me.

Then at Richard.

Then back at me.

“You own what?””

I slipped my purse onto the passenger seat.

Richard gave a short, stunned laugh.

“Your sister owns the company acquiring Hale Industries.””

Mom stepped forward.

“That’s not possible.””

Richard’s eyebrows rose.

“I’m sorry?””

“She works in an office.””

“I know.””

“She’s an assistant.””

I looked at my mother.

“I was an assistant.””

Mom froze.

Richard looked between us.

“Was?””

I closed the driver’s door.

“I stopped working there eighteen months ago.””

Emily whispered, “Then what have you been doing?””

“Building something.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“What?””

I looked at Richard.

He answered for me.

“She’s been buying companies.””

Mom shook her head.

“No. Claire barely has money for dinner.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“Mrs. Bennett, I believe you may have mistaken privacy for poverty.””

Mom went silent.

The security guard suddenly looked extremely uncomfortable.

“I was told she was causing a disturbance,” he said.

Richard turned toward him.

“She was invited.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And escorted out?””

The guard nodded slowly.

Richard looked at Mom.

“By her own mother?””

Mom straightened.

“I was protecting Emily.””

“From what?””

Mom glanced at my clothes.

I didn’t need her to answer.

Richard understood.

“You thought she looked poor.””

Emily whispered, “Mom…”

Mom’s voice hardened.

“This is a family event.””

“And Claire is family,” Richard said.

Emily stepped toward me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I looked at my sister.

Because I had tried.

So many times.

She just never asked the right questions.

Instead, I said, “You were busy planning your wedding.””

“That doesn’t answer me.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“It doesn’t.””

Richard looked at his watch.

Then back at me.

“I need to speak with you privately.””

Mom immediately interrupted.

“About the acquisition?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“She doesn’t know anything about business.””

I almost smiled.

Richard didn’t.

“Mrs. Bennett, I have personally spent eight months negotiating with her.””

Mom's face tightened.

“Eight months?””

“She negotiated every clause herself.””

Emily stared at me.

“You negotiated with him?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“You never asked.””

That hurt her.

I could see it.

But before she could respond, Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

“I need to show you something.””

He turned the screen toward me.

There was an email.

The subject line made my stomach drop.

*RE: Bennett Acquisition — Family Disclosure*

I looked at Richard.

“What is that?””

His voice lowered.

“It came from your mother.””

I took the phone.

My fingers went cold.

The email had been sent three days earlier.

And according to the timestamp, Mom had written something that could destroy the entire acquisition.

Something I had never seen.

Something that began with:

*Claire Bennett is not authorized to purchase Hale Industries because…*

I stopped reading.

Richard watched my face.

“What?”” Emily asked.

I looked at my mother.

She wasn’t pale anymore.

She was terrified.

May you like

And for the first time that night, I realized she hadn’t thrown me out because I looked poor.

She had thrown me out because she was afraid I would stay.
