Chapter 4: The Letter Grandpa Left Me
I stared at the envelope in Daniel Brooks’ hand.
My name was written across the front in my grandfather’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
The slightly uneven letters.
The way he pressed harder on certain words.
The same handwriting that had appeared on every birthday card he ever gave me.
For a few seconds, I forgot everything else.
The anger.
The betrayal.
The empty account.
All I could see was Grandpa.
“Ethan,” Mom whispered.
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Not because Daniel was there.
Because she knew what was inside that envelope.
“Why is he here?”” I asked.
Daniel stepped into my room slowly.
“Your grandfather asked me to deliver this personally if certain conditions were ever met.””
“What conditions?””
He glanced at Mom.
Then back at me.
“When someone attempted to access funds intended for your education without your knowledge.””
The room went silent.
Mom’s face turned pale.
“Daniel, this isn’t necessary.””
He looked at her calmly.
“Linda, your father was very specific.””
The way he said it made my chest tighten.
Grandpa had expected something like this.
I sat down on my bed.
“Open it,” Grandma said through the phone.
Daniel placed the envelope in my hands.
“You should read it privately.””
“No.””
I looked at Mom.
“She heard everything. She can hear this too.””
Mom swallowed.
Daniel nodded.
“Your grandfather wanted you to have the truth.””
My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
The first line nearly broke me.
Ethan, if you are reading this, something happened that I hoped never would.
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
I have spent my life believing family protects family. But I also learned that love without boundaries can sometimes hurt the people it tries to protect.
I looked up.
Mom was crying silently.
I kept reading.
The money I placed aside for you was never a gift to anyone else. It was a promise to you.
My throat tightened.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Your grandfather recorded everything legally. The account was placed into a trust.””
I looked at him.
“So my mother couldn’t use it?””
“Not without following the conditions.””
“What conditions?””
Daniel opened his folder.
“The funds could only be used for your education, approved living expenses, or with your direct written permission.””
I looked at Mom.
“You didn’t have permission.””
She wiped her face.
“I thought I was helping.””
I shook my head.
“No. You decided.””
She flinched.
Daniel continued.
“There is more.””
I looked back at him.
“More?””
“Yes.””
He removed another document.
“Your grandfather included a protection clause.””
“What does that mean?””
“If the money was taken without your approval, the trust would immediately freeze all remaining assets and trigger an investigation.””
My stomach dropped.
“Investigation?””
Mom stood up.
“Daniel, please.””
He didn’t look at her.
“The documents were designed specifically to protect Ethan.””
I stared at Mom.
“Why are you scared?””
She didn’t answer.
That was becoming the one thing she was best at.
Not answering.
Daniel placed the second document in front of me.
“Your grandfather also left instructions regarding any missing funds.””
I read the heading.
My heart started beating faster.
“Repayment agreement?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Mom.
“You have to pay it back.””
She whispered:
“I know.””
The answer shocked me.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“When did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Two months ago.””
I stepped back.
“Two months?””
She covered her mouth.
“I was trying to fix it before you found out.””
“You had two months.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me believe everything was fine.””
She cried harder.
“I didn’t want to lose you.””
The words hurt.
Because part of me wanted to believe them.
But another part kept seeing the account balance.
$1,327.
My entire future reduced to a number.
Richard appeared in the doorway.
“What is happening?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Mr. Hayes.””
Richard froze.
“You know who I am?””
“Yes.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your name appears in the financial records.””
The room went completely still.
I turned toward Richard.
“My name appears where?””
Daniel opened the folder again.
“There were several transfers.””
My heart sank.
“Transfers to who?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“Accounts connected to household expenses.””
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
I stared at him.
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Mom looked at him.
“Richard?””
For the first time, she looked confused.
Not guilty.
Confused.
Daniel closed the folder.
“I recommend we continue this conversation tomorrow.””
“No,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
“I want the truth now.””
Daniel studied my face.
Then nodded.
“Your grandfather always said you were stubborn.””
A small, painful smile appeared.
“He said it would either save you or get you into trouble.””
I looked down at the letter again.
There was one final paragraph.
One sentence that made my blood run cold.
Ethan, if anyone in your family tells you this was only about money, they are not telling you the whole story.
I looked at Mom.
Then Richard.
May you like
Because suddenly, I wasn’t just trying to find out where my college money went.
I was trying to understand what they had been hiding from me.
