Chapter 13: Grandpa’s Missing Notebook
The man stood in the doorway holding Grandpa’s notebook.
For six years, I thought that notebook was gone forever.
I remembered it sitting on the corner of Grandpa’s desk.
Brown leather cover.
Worn edges.
Small scratches from years of use.
He carried it everywhere.
Whenever I asked what he wrote inside, he would smile and say:
“Things I don’t want the world to forget.””
Now it was in the hands of a stranger.
A stranger who knew my father.
A stranger who knew Grandpa.
And somehow, a stranger who knew the truth.
Daniel stepped between us.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“Someone who made mistakes.””
“That’s not an answer.””
The man looked back at me.
“My name is Victor Hale.””
Mom immediately stepped backward.
“You.””
Victor looked at her.
“Linda.””
The way he said her name made my stomach tighten.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone who knew her.
“Mom?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked between them.
“You know him.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Victor sighed.
“Because I was there when everything started.””
My hands tightened.
“Everything?””
He looked at the notebook.
“Your grandfather discovered where the money was going.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What money?””
Victor looked at him.
“The money Richard was hiding.””
My heart sank.
Again.
Richard.
Always Richard.
“Where is he?”” I asked.
Victor’s face hardened.
“He’s already left.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He knew you would find out eventually.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You expect us to believe you?””
Victor nodded.
“No.””
That surprised everyone.
“I don’t expect trust.””
He held out the notebook.
“I expect you to read this.””
I didn’t move.
“Why?””
“Because your grandfather wrote it for you.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because we don’t know his intentions.””
Victor gave a sad smile.
“Your grandfather was the most careful man I ever knew.””
He looked at me.
“If he wanted Ethan to have something, there was a reason.””
I reached for the notebook.
The second my fingers touched the cover, I felt something I couldn’t explain.
A connection.
A memory.
Grandpa sitting beside me at the kitchen table.
His glasses low on his nose.
His voice telling me:
“Always ask questions, Ethan. The truth doesn’t disappear just because people hide it.””
I opened the notebook.
The first pages were normal.
Business notes.
Names.
Numbers.
Then I saw a page marked with my name.
My heart stopped.
Ethan.
I read.
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised.
I swallowed.
But I need you to understand something.
The money was never the most important thing.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
I continued.
Money can be replaced. Time cannot. Trust cannot.
My eyes burned.
Grandpa knew.
He knew this day might come.
The next lines were harder.
Your father discovered the truth before I did.
I froze.
My father.
He found evidence that Richard was using family accounts to hide debts and move money between businesses.
I looked at Victor.
He nodded slowly.
“He found out.””
I kept reading.
Your father tried to protect Ethan. He wanted to expose Richard.
My breathing became heavier.
But someone warned Richard.
The room went silent.
Someone warned him.
I looked at Mom.
She looked away.
My heart dropped.
“No.””
She whispered:
“Ethan…”
I shook my head.
“Did you warn him?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“No.””
“Then who?””
She didn’t answer.
Victor spoke.
“Your mother didn’t warn him.””
I looked at Victor.
“Then who?””
He looked down.
“Me.””
The room froze.
I stared at him.
“You?””
Victor nodded.
“I thought Richard was only trying to protect himself.””
“And?””
“And I was wrong.””
My anger rose.
“My father died because of this.””
Victor closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than anything.
“You knew?””
“I spent years trying to undo what I helped create.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why come now?””
Victor looked at me.
“Because Richard knows the notebook exists.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he will do anything to get it back.””
As if the universe wanted to prove him right, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Richard.
You have something that belongs to me.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
Bring it back, Ethan. Before you learn the rest.
