Chapter 13: The Signature That Changed Everything
I stared at my son's signature until the letters blurred.
Jared Whitmore.
The name was unmistakable. The same slanted J, the same sharp ending to the final r. I had watched him sign birthday cards, school permission slips, and the papers for his first apartment. I knew his handwriting as well as I knew my own.
And now it appeared on a document authorizing the transfer of my wife's estate.
Jared looked as though someone had drained every drop of blood from his body.
"That's not possible," he whispered.
Daniel raised the revolver slightly.
"Isn't it? You signed the documents, Jared. You gave me control of the company, the trust, and the assets your mother spent years protecting.""
"I never agreed to that.""
"You signed them willingly.""
"You told me they were investment documents!""
Daniel laughed.
"Did you read them?""
Jared said nothing.
I watched my son lower his eyes.
The silence frightened me more than Daniel's weapon.
"Jared," I said quietly, "look at me.""
He did.
"Did you sign these papers?""
His lips trembled.
"Yes.""
Margaret covered her mouth.
Jared took a shaky breath.
"I was thirty-five. My company was struggling, and I was desperate to secure an investment. Richard Vale told me the documents would protect my shares from a hostile takeover. Mom was already missing, and Uncle Daniel said he knew where she was.""
"You knew your mother was alive?"" I asked.
"No, Dad. I swear I didn't.""
Daniel chuckled.
"He knew enough.""
Jared turned toward him.
"You said Mom was dead!""
"And you believed me.""
"You showed me a death certificate!""
"An excellent forgery, wasn't it?""
Jared lunged forward, but Margaret grabbed his arm.
"Don't," she whispered.
"That's what he wants.""
Daniel's smile widened.
"Your mother always was the clever one. She knew when to keep her mouth shut.""
Margaret stepped between him and Jared.
"You've taken enough from this family.""
"Enough?"" Daniel's face hardened.
"I spent thirty years watching Robert receive everything I deserved. Our parents gave him the house. Margaret gave him her loyalty. Then she built a company and left you, Jared, as her precious heir.""
"She left me nothing," Jared replied bitterly.
"Because she didn't trust you with the truth.""
The words struck their target.
Jared looked down at the document again.
Daniel continued.
"You were supposed to be the responsible one, the successful one, the son who could protect the family. Yet when I offered you a way to secure your future, you signed whatever I put in front of you.""
"How much money did you steal from my father?"" Jared demanded.
"Your father?"" Daniel laughed.
"Two hundred eighty-eight thousand dollars? That's pocket change compared with what your mother concealed.""
I felt Margaret's fingers tighten around mine.
"Daniel, don't.""
He turned toward her.
"Tell them, Margaret. Tell them why the company was worth millions. Tell them whose money you used to build it.""
Margaret's face went pale.
I stared at her.
"What is he talking about?""
She closed her eyes.
"Robert, before I met you, my father owned a small medical equipment business. When he died, he left me shares in the company. I reinvested the dividends for years.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Daniel was already in debt when we married. I was afraid he'd ask for money, and I knew you'd try to help him.""
I looked at my brother.
He smiled.
"She always did understand me.""
"She understood you better than you understood yourself," I said.
His expression turned vicious.
"You think you're better than me, Robert? You spent your life pretending to be honest while your wife hid millions behind your back.""
"I never stole from anyone.""
"No. You just benefited from everyone else's sacrifices.""
Daniel stepped toward Jared and held out the document.
"Now, here's the choice. You sign a new authorization confirming my ownership of the holding company, and I walk away. Your father keeps his little apartment.
Your wife keeps her freedom. Your mother keeps breathing.""
Jared stared at him.
"And if I refuse?""
Daniel lifted the revolver.
"Then we discover how much your family is willing to sacrifice for a signature.""
Margaret moved closer to me.
I could feel her trembling.
For eleven years, she had lived with the knowledge that her family believed her dead. She had missed Jared's birthdays, our anniversaries, and the ordinary mornings that make up a marriage. She had done it because she believed Daniel's threats.
I wasn't going to let him take another day from us.
"Daniel," I said, "you've already lost.""
He turned the weapon toward me.
"Have I?""
"Your money is being investigated. Your forged documents are in police custody. Your name is connected to the missing transfers, the false death certificate, and the clinic records. Even if Jared signs, you can't erase the evidence.""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"Who told you that?""
"Your own greed.""
For one second, his attention shifted toward the window.
Jared moved.
He grabbed Daniel's wrist, and the revolver discharged into the ceiling.
Margaret screamed.
I threw myself toward Daniel, and the three of us crashed against the hallway wall. The weapon skidded across the floor.
Daniel struck Jared across the face, then tried to reach the gun.
A siren sounded outside.
Detective Alvarez's team had arrived.
Daniel froze.
Through the open doorway, I saw two officers approaching with their weapons drawn.
"Drop your hands!"" one shouted.
Daniel slowly raised his arms.
As the officers handcuffed him, he looked at Jared with pure hatred.
"You think this is over? Ask your mother about the original beneficiary. Ask her why she chose Emily instead of you.""
Jared went still.
Margaret's face crumpled.
Daniel smiled as the officers led him away.
Then he delivered one final blow.
"Your mother didn't just hide the money, Jared. She changed her will because she discovered what you did.""
The door closed behind him.
Jared turned toward Margaret.
"Mom?""
She couldn't meet his eyes.
"He's lying about some things," she whispered.
"Which things?""
Margaret began to cry.
I took her hand, but she pulled away.
"Robert, there's something I need to tell you. Something I've kept secret for eleven years.""
She looked directly at Jared.
"Your uncle didn't forge every document.""
Jared's face went white.
Margaret swallowed.
"One of the original transfers was authorized by someone who knew exactly what the money was for.""
May you like
She paused.
"And that person was you.""
