Chapter 4: The Name on the Authorization
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Eleanor Whitmore reached for the phone in Dr. Hale's hand.
"Repeat that," she said.
The woman on the other end sounded frightened.
"Mrs. Whitmore, the request came through your executive account. It included authorization to access Sarah's prenatal records and request additional testing.""
Eleanor's fingers tightened around the phone.
"I never authorized any such request.""
"That's what we're trying to establish. The digital signature appears to match the one on file with your office.""
Daniel let out a quiet breath.
It almost sounded like relief.
I turned toward him.
"Why are you smiling?""
His expression immediately changed.
"I'm not.""
"You were smiling a second ago.""
"Sarah, you're upset. Please don't start accusing everyone without understanding what's happening.""
I stared at him.
"Someone used your mother's identity to access my medical records. Someone forged my signature on an insurance application. And you want me to stop asking questions?""
Eleanor handed the phone back to Dr. Hale.
"Tell your records manager not to delete or alter anything. Our attorney will contact the clinic within the hour.""
Dr. Hale nodded.
"Of course.""
"And Doctor?""
He paused at the doorway.
"If you signed something you didn't fully understand, I suggest you tell us everything now. Before someone else decides what the truth should look like.""
The doctor looked at Daniel.
That glance was brief, but I caught it.
So did Eleanor.
"Why are you looking at my son?"" she asked.
Dr. Hale swallowed.
"Because he brought the documents to my office.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"That's enough.""
"No," I said.
"It isn't.""
My voice sounded different now. I was still frightened, still eight months pregnant, still standing in the living room where my husband had watched his mistress strike me.
But the fear was beginning to harden into something else.
"Tell me exactly what happened at the clinic.""
Dr. Hale set his medical bag on the table.
"Daniel came to see me six weeks ago. He said you were experiencing unusual episodes of dizziness and that your family had a history of cardiac problems. He wanted an additional screening arranged.""
"I never told him that.""
"I understand that now.""
"Did you examine me?""
"No. The request was made before your next scheduled appointment.""
Eleanor's eyes narrowed.
"Then why did you sign the referral?""
The doctor looked ashamed.
"Daniel told me your primary care physician had recommended it. He said the paperwork was delayed and that the insurance company needed the referral immediately.""
"And you didn't verify that?""
"I should have.""
Daniel threw his hands up.
"This is ridiculous. I was trying to make sure my wife had proper medical care!""
"Then why did you use my mother's account?"" I demanded.
He turned toward me.
"I didn't.""
"Why did you tell the doctor I had a family history of a condition I've never heard of?""
"I was being cautious.""
"Why did you increase my life insurance?""
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa, who had remained near the front door, suddenly spoke.
"Daniel, you told me the medical tests were necessary because Sarah had a condition that could make childbirth dangerous.""
I looked at her.
"When did he tell you that?""
"Last month.""
"Did he tell you what condition?""
She shook her head.
"He said it was complicated. He said he was worried about you and that if anything happened during delivery, he needed to make sure the baby would be provided for.""
I felt sick.
"You knew he was arranging insurance on me?""
"I thought it was a normal policy. I didn't know about the forged signature.""
"But you knew you were the beneficiary.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Yes.""
The admission hung in the room.
I looked at the woman who had slapped me, the woman who had smiled while my husband blamed me, the woman who had apparently believed she might inherit millions of dollars if I died.
"Did you ever think to ask why a man who claimed to love you needed his pregnant wife to die for your future?""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I thought he was going to leave you.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She looked away.
Eleanor moved toward the table and collected the insurance documents.
"Daniel, your executive access has been suspended pending the investigation. You will surrender your company devices and cooperate with the auditors.""
He stared at her.
"You can't suspend me without a board vote.""
"I can suspend access to financial systems while a fraud investigation is underway. The board has already approved emergency measures.""
His face reddened.
"You planned this.""
"I planned to protect my company.""
"You've always wanted to control my life!""
Eleanor's expression finally broke.
For the first time, I saw pain beneath her composure.
"I spent thirty years building a company I could pass on to you. I gave you every opportunity to prove you deserved it.""
She paused.
"Instead, you used my name to reach into your wife's medical records.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Mom, please. You know me.""
"I thought I did.""
Those four words silenced him.
My daughter kicked again, and I pressed my palm against my stomach.
Eleanor immediately turned to me.
"We're going to the hospital.""
"I'm not leaving until I know why my name is on that policy.""
"You deserve answers," she said gently.
"But you and the baby come first.""
Before I could respond, Dr. Hale's phone rang again.
He answered, listened for several seconds, then slowly lowered it.
"What is it?"" Eleanor asked.
"The clinic located the original referral request.""
"And?""
Dr. Hale looked at me.
"The request included a note instructing the clinic to contact Daniel directly if Sarah's test results showed any signs of the alleged condition.""
"Why would my husband receive my private medical results?"" I whispered.
"He shouldn't have," the doctor admitted.
Then he turned the page attached to the referral.
His expression changed.
"There's something else. The request was made for a test that I never ordered.""
Daniel took a step backward.
Eleanor noticed.
"What test?""
Dr. Hale looked at the paper again.
"A genetic screening panel.""
I felt the room grow cold.
Because the date beside the order was the same date Daniel had taken me to dinner and raised his glass to our unborn daughter.
And beneath the test request was a handwritten instruction.
*Determine whether the pregnancy presents a hereditary financial risk.*
Eleanor read it twice.
Then she looked at her son.
"Daniel, what did you think you were going to find?""
He didn't answer.
May you like
But the fear in his eyes told me something worse than the affair was hiding behind those papers.
And whatever it was, it involved our daughter.
