Chapter 11: The Witness

Nathan stared at Victor’s message.

“I didn't do anything with it.””

I held out my hand.

“Give me your phone.””

He hesitated.

“Nathan.””

He handed it over.

I opened the conversation.

Victor had sent another message.

*You know where it is. Your mother gave it to you the night Rachel's father died.*

Nathan’s face went pale.

“I don't remember that.””

Clara stepped closer.

“You do.””

He looked at her.

“I was in shock.””

“You were carrying a folder.””

“What folder?””

“The one Diane gave you.””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

Clara pointed at him.

“You walked out of the hospital with it.””

I stared at Nathan.

“What was inside?””

“I don't know.””

“You never opened it?””

“I was told not to.””

“By whom?””

“My mother.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

Evan took the phone.

“We need to get somewhere secure.””

Clara nodded.

“There’s a storage unit.””

“Where?”” I asked.

“Your father rented it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“He kept original documents there.””

“Then why didn't you tell me before?””

“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””

Her eyes moved to Nathan.

“Now I still don't.””

We left the apartment through the rear stairs.

The rain had stopped.

The streets were almost empty.

The storage facility sat behind an abandoned warehouse.

Clara handed me a key.

“Unit 118.””

I opened the door.

Dust floated through the beam of my flashlight.

There were boxes stacked against every wall.

Tax records.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

And one metal lockbox.

My father's name was engraved on it.

I tried the key.

It opened.

Inside was a marriage certificate.

Not the fake one.

The original.

I unfolded it.

My name.

Nathan's name.

Our actual wedding date.

And below our names, the witness signature.

*Thomas Carter.*

Nathan's father.

I stared at it.

“Your father witnessed our wedding?””

Nathan looked confused.

“My father died before our ceremony.””

“No,” Clara said quietly.

I looked at her.

“He didn't.””

Nathan turned toward her.

“What?””

“Thomas Carter was alive.””

Nathan stepped backward.

“My father died when I was seventeen.””

Clara shook her head.

“That was what your mother told everyone.””

I looked at the certificate again.

The signature was unmistakable.

Thomas Carter.

But the date was three years after his supposed death.

Nathan's voice cracked.

“That's impossible.””

Evan examined the certificate.

“This isn't just a marriage record.””

“What do you mean?””

He pointed to a seal in the corner.

“It's notarized.””

“By whom?””

He turned the paper.

“Margaret Ellis.””

I looked at Clara.

“You said my father gave you documents.””

“He did.””

“Did he know Thomas was alive?””

“Yes.””

Nathan sat down on a box.

“My father is alive?””

Clara didn't answer.

That silence told me enough.

Nathan covered his face.

“My mother said he died.””

“She lied,” Clara said.

“Why?””

“Because Thomas left her.””

Nathan slowly looked up.

“Why?””

Clara's voice hardened.

“Because he discovered what she had done.””

I stared at the certificate.

“What had Diane done?””

Clara pointed toward another box.

“Open that.””

Inside were financial records from my father's company.

One account had payments to Diane.

Another had payments to Victor.

But the largest payments went to someone named *Thomas Carter*.

Nathan leaned over the papers.

“That can't be my father.””

“It is,” Clara said.

“He took money from my father?””

“No.””

She pointed to the dates.

“These payments began after Thomas disappeared.””

Nathan looked confused.

“Then who received them?””

Evan turned one page.

The account holder name was visible.

*Thomas Carter — Witness Protection Trust.*

I stared at it.

“Witness protection?””

Clara nodded.

“Your father helped him disappear.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas was the only person who could testify against Diane.””

Nathan looked horrified.

“She was going to kill him?””

“She tried.””

Clara reached into the box and pulled out a photograph.

It showed Thomas standing beside my father.

On the back was a date.

The night before my wedding.

Nathan whispered:

“My father was there.””

“Yes.””

“And he witnessed my marriage.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Diane tell me he was dead?””

Clara looked at me.

“Because she needed Nathan to believe he had no family left except her.””

My stomach turned.

“She isolated you.””

Nathan nodded slowly.

“All my life.””

“And then she gave you to me,” I said.

He looked at me.

“She wanted you to marry me.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Clara answered.

“Because your father had one final condition in his will.””

She pulled out another document.

I read it.

My father's estate would remain under my sole control unless I voluntarily transferred it.

But there was a second clause.

*Any marriage entered into under coercion, fraud, or concealment would trigger an independent trust for Rachel’s protection.*

I looked at Nathan.

“So Diane needed my marriage to appear legitimate.””

Clara nodded.

“And she needed Nathan to be my husband.””

I felt sick.

“The whole marriage was a setup.””

Nathan's eyes filled with tears.

“Rachel, I didn't know at first.””

“But eventually you did.””

He couldn't answer.

Then the storage facility lights flickered.

Evan looked toward the entrance.

Someone had opened the outer gate.

A car rolled slowly between the buildings.

Clara grabbed my arm.

“We have to go.””

Nathan stood.

“Who is it?””

She whispered one name.

“Victor.””

The car stopped outside Unit 118.

A shadow stepped out.

Then another.

May you like

And a man's voice called through the darkness.

“Rachel, you finally found the certificate.””
