Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Husband's Weakness

At ten that morning, Helen received a call from the lender's compliance department.

By noon, she had arranged a secure meeting with the company's legal representative. Dad insisted on accompanying me, but Helen warned us that the meeting would only provide preliminary information, not a final conclusion about anyone's liability.

We met in a glass conference room overlooking downtown Atlanta.

A woman named Monica Reed introduced herself as the lender's senior compliance officer. She carried a thick binder and a laptop.

"Ms. Bennett," Monica began, "I understand you dispute the personal guarantee submitted with this loan.""

"I do. I never signed it.""

"Have you ever authorized your husband to sign financial documents on your behalf?""

"No. Not for a loan of this size.""

Monica nodded.

"We take allegations of document fraud seriously. We have preserved the original submission and restricted further changes to the relevant records while our review continues.""

Helen leaned forward.

"Can you tell us whether the guarantee was essential to the loan approval?""

"Not conclusively at this stage. The application included several supporting documents, and our team is reviewing the approval process. We can confirm that the guarantee was part of the submitted package.""

Dad opened his notebook.

"Who submitted it?""

Monica checked the file.

"The application came through Bennett Construction's financial office. The electronic submission was associated with credentials assigned to Daniel Bennett.""

My throat tightened.

"So he submitted it?""

"The records show his credentials were used. We cannot yet determine who was physically operating the system at the time.""

Helen nodded.

"That's an important distinction. We would like copies of the relevant access logs, submission records, and original documents through the proper legal process.""

Monica agreed to coordinate with the company's counsel.

Then she opened another section of the binder.

"There is an additional concern. The loan application identified Carter Strategic Holdings as the entity that would receive the proceeds.""

Dad frowned.

"Why was a company unrelated to Bennett Construction receiving the money?""

"That is part of our investigation. The application described the transaction as a restructuring arrangement involving business assets.""

"Which assets?"" Helen asked.

Monica turned a page.

"Certain contractual rights and anticipated revenue streams were listed as collateral.""

Dad leaned back.

"Revenue streams from which company?""

"Bennett Construction.""

I felt the room tilt.

Daniel hadn't simply been borrowing money to keep his company alive.

He might have been pledging future company income to a separate entity.

An entity connected to the woman he'd been seeing for eleven months.

"Who owns Carter Strategic Holdings?"" I asked.

Monica glanced at Helen before answering.

"The corporate filing identifies Elizabeth Carter as its managing member.""

Helen wrote something in her notebook.

"Thank you. We'll follow up formally.""

The meeting ended without a definitive answer, but I walked out with one terrifying realization.

The affair and the financial irregularities weren't two separate disasters.

They might have been parts of the same plan.

In the car, Dad called his chief financial officer, Mark Ellis.

"Mark, I need a complete review of every transaction connected to Bennett Construction," he said.

"Every transfer, every loan, every contract involving Carter Strategic Holdings. Preserve the original records and don't alter anything.""

He listened for a moment.

Then his expression darkened.

"How long have you known about this?""

I watched his fingers tighten around the steering wheel.

"Understood. Send the records to Helen. Immediately.""

When he ended the call, I asked, "What happened?""

"Mark found another transfer.""

"How much?""

"Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.""

"Where did it go?""

"An escrow account connected to a residential property.""

I stared at him.

"Vanessa's apartment?""

"We don't know. We're verifying the property records.""

I looked out the window.

Daniel had once told me that financial security meant never having to worry about money.

I'd believed him because my father had helped make that promise possible.

Now the thought of our joint account made me feel physically ill.

When we reached Dad's house, Helen was already there, reviewing documents on the dining table.

She looked up as we entered.

"I've received preliminary corporate records for Carter Strategic Holdings," she said.

"The company was formed by Elizabeth Carter nine months ago, but she wasn't the only person involved in its creation.""

She slid a page toward me.

A second name appeared beneath Elizabeth's.

Daniel Bennett.

"He was listed as a consultant," Helen explained.

"That alone doesn't establish wrongdoing, but it contradicts his claim that he had no business relationship with her.""

I stared at the page.

"He told me Vanessa was a marketing consultant for one of his projects.""

"That may have been the explanation he gave you," Helen said.

"We need to establish whether it was true.""

Dad sat down heavily.

"Who is Elizabeth Carter?""

Helen turned her laptop toward us.

"We've located a professional history that appears to match the person in your photograph. Elizabeth worked for a financial advisory firm several years ago. She left after an internal investigation into irregular transactions.""

"Was she charged with anything?"" I asked.

"We haven't found reliable evidence of a criminal conviction. An internal investigation is not proof of criminal conduct. But her former employment may explain why she understood the financial structures involved.""

I studied the photograph again.

The woman had sat beside Daniel with the confidence of someone who knew the room belonged to her.

"What if she was the one who approached him?"" I asked.

"That's possible," Helen replied.

"It's also possible Daniel approached her. We need communications, contracts, and financial records to establish the sequence.""

My phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

*You want to know who Elizabeth Carter really is? Meet me alone tonight at seven. The parking garage beneath the Westin Peachtree Plaza.

Don't tell Richard. Don't tell your lawyer.*

Dad read it over my shoulder.

"Absolutely not.""

Helen took a photograph of the message.

"Do not reply yet. We don't know who sent this or whether the meeting would be safe.""

"But what if they know something?""

"Then they can provide it through a safer channel," Helen said.

A second message appeared.

Daniel thinks you only found the affair. He doesn't know what you saw in the transfer documents.

I felt a chill crawl up my spine.

I hadn't told anyone outside this room about the folder labeled TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP.

Not even my closest friends.

"How would they know what I saw?"" I whispered.

Dad immediately called his security consultant, who advised us to preserve the messages and avoid meeting an unidentified person alone.

Helen sent a formal preservation request to the lender and began preparing additional requests for company records.

For the next hour, we examined every document we had.

Then Helen stopped at a page buried in the corporate filings.

"Richard," she said quietly, "I think we've found the connection.""

Dad moved beside her.

"What is it?""

Helen pointed to a registered address.

It belonged to a small office building near downtown Atlanta.

The same building where Daniel had told me he was meeting a potential investor eleven months earlier.

I remembered that evening clearly.

He'd returned home late, carrying flowers and apologizing for missing dinner.

He'd kissed my forehead and told me the meeting had gone better than expected.

At the time, I'd thought he was simply trying to make up for a long day.

Now I wondered whether he'd been celebrating the beginning of something far more sinister.

Helen opened another file.

"The company records list an initial capital contribution from an account associated with a woman named Vanessa Cole.""

I looked at her.

"Vanessa?""

"That's the name on the filing.""

"Then Elizabeth and Vanessa are the same person?""

"Not necessarily. We need to verify the identities and determine whether one name was used as an alias.""

Dad stared at the screen.

"Can we contact her?""

"Not yet," Helen replied.

"First, we need to understand what we have and what we don't. A direct confrontation could alert anyone involved and compromise evidence.""

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message contained a photograph of Daniel standing outside the office building.

Beside him was Elizabeth Carter.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

Eleven months earlier.

The exact day Daniel had told me he'd secured a new construction contract.

Beneath the photograph was one final message.

Elizabeth didn't seduce your husband, Sarah. She offered him a way to destroy the evidence of what he'd already done.

I read the sentence twice.

Then the sender's identity appeared.

*Patricia Bennett.*

Before I could call her, another message arrived.

And if you want to know why Daniel chose you, look at the first investment agreement your father signed.
